Chapter 3

Antonio and Diego were not the kind of men who accepted loss gracefully. After watching the last remnants of the past curl into ash, they tried to claw their way back—two heirs without crowns, scrambling to salvage something already dead.

“Serafina,” Antonio said later, dragging a hand through his hair the way men do when they’re rehearsing a lie or a confession. “Let’s eat. Just us. Somewhere nice. On us.”

Diego followed quickly, his voice stripped of its usual arrogance. “Our place. The one we always go to. One dinner. That’s all we’re asking. Let us fix this.”

I didn’t argue. I didn’t smile. I simply inclined my head.

Inside, I already knew the truth: this wasn’t reconciliation.

It was an ending.

We drove through the city in Antonio’s black executive sedan, the kind that looked more like a Don’s car than a lover’s. The silence inside was thick, charged, humming like a wire about to snap.

Then Diego’s phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and cursed under his breath. “It’s Cassandra.”

The way his voice sharpened told me everything before he even answered. “Cassandra? What happened?”

Her voice pierced the car—high, frantic, theatrical. “The electricity’s out. Someone broke in. I heard noises. I’m terrified. Please—please come right now.”

Antonio’s jaw locked. He looked at me once, briefly, then turned to his brother. “Pull over.”

“What?” I asked.

“Get out,” Antonio said curtly. “We’re going to Cassandra. You’re not coming.”

I barely had time to register the words before the door was opened and I was pushed onto the rain-slick street. Cold water soaked through my hair and dress instantly.

They didn’t wait.

Didn’t check behind them.

Didn’t slow.

The car vanished into the storm, taillights bleeding red into the darkness like a warning I’d ignored too long.

I stood there, drenched, mascara streaking down my face like war paint washed away.

And then—I smiled.

Not because it hurt less.

But because it finally made sense.

That dinner had never been meant to save us.

It was a burial rite.

They just didn’t realize they were the ones being mourned.

---

Three blocks later, I kicked off my heels. Satin was useless on flooded pavement, and my feet were already torn raw. I carried them by the straps as I walked barefoot through the city, rain soaking me through to the bone, the hem of my dress heavy against my legs.

No cab stopped.

Cars slowed, drivers stared, then accelerated—like they’d seen a bad omen they didn’t want to invite closer.

I didn’t cry.

I turned into a narrow alley, thinking it would cut me toward the main road. I told myself I just needed light. A streetlamp. A bus stop. Somewhere to collapse with dignity.

The alley had other plans.

A man stepped out from behind a dumpster. Hood pulled low. Rain dripping from his sleeves. The blade flashed before my brain could catch up.

He said something—money, bag, phone—it didn’t matter. I fought him anyway.

I scratched. I punched. I screamed until my throat tore.

That’s when the knife went in.

Once.

Twice.

A third time as I tried to crawl.

The pain burned, then vanished into cold so deep it stole my breath. I remember falling. I remember the pavement against my cheek, like the city pressing a final kiss.

Then—headlights.

A door slamming.

Someone shouting my name like it mattered.

Arms lifting me.

I tried to speak. Tried to say call my aunt. Tell her I was sorry. Tell her the cookies wouldn’t make it. But my lips wouldn’t obey. The world blurred into static.

And then I saw him.

That face.

The man from the sea.

The same stranger who’d leapt into black water during Cassandra’s birthday. The same man who’d dragged me from the waves after Antonio shoved me from the yacht like trash.

I’d told myself he was a hallucination. That shock had invented him.

But here he was—real, solid—holding me as blood soaked into his pristine white shirt.

“Stay awake, Serafina,” he said, calm and commanding, like a man used to being obeyed. “You’re not dying tonight. Not on my watch.”

“Who… are you?” I breathed.

A faint smile touched his mouth. “Dante.”

Then he disappeared again—not like a miracle, but like a man with power. A secretary called his name, and he left the hospital room without ceremony, without thanks.

I stayed hospitalized for seven days.

Tubes. Stitches. Silence.

No visitors. No calls. I told the nurses not to notify my family. I needed to feel the emptiness—to let hope finish dying.

On the day they discharged me, pale and dressed in a hospital gown, I stepped into the corridor—

And there they were.

Cassandra lay on a stretcher, wrists wrapped in blood-soaked gauze, mascara smeared as she screamed dramatically. Antonio clutched her hand, murmuring reassurances. Diego followed behind, carrying her bag like a loyal soldier.

They passed me.

Then stopped.

Antonio stared like he’d seen a ghost.

Diego looked punched hollow.

“Serafina?” Antonio whispered.

I glanced at the IV tape still stuck to my hand. I hadn’t even changed yet.

“You’re here?” Diego asked weakly.

“You were hospitalized?” Antonio stepped forward—but I stepped back.

A quiet laugh escaped me. Broken. Exhausted. Final.

“I’ve been here a week,” I said softly. “Bleeding. Fighting to stay alive. And none of you noticed I was gone.”

They had no words.

Behind them, Cassandra screamed again.

And like always—they turned to her.

So I turned away.

Barefoot.

Still bleeding inside.

And finally—

free.
