Chapter 3

He asked me to go to Sierra Heights with him to relax. I didn't hesitate for a second, canceled all my plans, and drove him there.

As we got close to Sierra Heights, he insisted we stop the car on the side of the road and walk the rest of the way.

I was puzzled. Every other time we'd gone to Sierra Heights, we'd driven all the way to the base of the mountain. Ethan had always been pampered, never wanting to walk more than necessary. Now, with a long way to go, he wanted to walk.

"Ethan, isn't it too far to park here? We'll have to walk for ages," I asked, worried.

Ethan snapped, "I want to park here. Are you going to do it or not?"

Seeing his anger, I quickly agreed, "Okay, don't get mad. I'll do as you say."

On weekdays, Sierra Heights had few visitors, and we didn't seen many cars on our drive.

Halfway there, Ethan took a phone call. After hanging up, he said, "Mom, let's take this road. If we cross at the light, it'll be quicker."

Without thinking much about it, I followed his lead.

As I crossed the street when the light was green, a bright red car came speeding toward me.

In the split second I was hit, my last thought was of Ethan's safety. Using the last of my strength, I turned my head to make sure he was okay before closing my eyes.

Strangely, my soul didn't disappear. Instead, I was trapped at the accident scene.

Because of this, I saw that the person who hit me was Ethan's ex-wife, Jessica.

I watched as Ethan ignored my body on the ground, happily opened the door of the red car, and excitedly hugged Jessy. "Jessy, now no one can stop us from being together."

"Watch your expression. Don't look so excited. The police will be here soon," Jessica warned him.

Listening to their conversation, I realized that my beloved son had conspired with Jessica to kill me, all because I had tried to stop them from being together.

As I watched them playact for the police, Ethan finally offered to settle privately, even telling the officers that I was kind in life and would surely forgive Jessica.

I was livid. Thank goodness I got a second chance at life.

Just then, my phone rang. It was Ethan. I hesitated to answer, but eventually, I picked up.

"Mom, why did you sell the house? You could've at least told me! I went back and couldn't find you!"

"I bought that house with my own money. Why should I inform you when I sell it? Who do you think you are?"

"Aren't we family? Anyway, Mom, I called to apologize. I realize I messed up, but I don't even know where you are right now. I miss you so much. Remember how you used to take me to Sierra Heights after we had a fight to reminisce about Dad? Can we go there again?" Ethan's voice on the other end was thick with emotion.

I knew he was trying to manipulate me into going to Sierra Heights, the place where he had once taken my life.

It was hard to forget that place.

"I don't have time. I'm not going," I said firmly.

But Ethan wouldn't let it go. He knew how to push my buttons, especially when it came to his dad. "Mom, I had a dream about Dad last night. He said he misses us. Let's go to Sierra Heights and see him, okay?"

In the end, I reluctantly agreed.

The next day, I drove to the spot we had agreed on to pick up Ethan, and together we set off for Sierra Heights.
