Chapter 2

"Fix the school app right now," Adrian demanded, stepping directly in front of my car door before I could even press the unlock button. "Revoking Sienna's pickup access makes her feel like an outsider."

"She is an outsider, Adrian," I said, pressing the button on my key fob. "She is not Leo's mother."

"She picks him up all the time lately," he argued, blocking the handle. "She helps us."

I pushed past his shoulder and pulled the passenger door open.

A beige leather tote bag occupied the center of my seat. An orange plastic daily pillbox and a folded silk scarf rested squarely on top of it.

"She needs the front," Adrian said quickly, reading my expression. "Her treatments make her dizzy. Just sit in the back with Nora."

I looked at the six-year-old girl already buckled into the rear driver-side seat. Nora stared back at me, her small hands gripping the straps of her backpack.

Leo poked his head between the front headrests. "Mom, Sienna always sits there now. She goes to Dad's office with him."

The metal door handle turned freezing cold against my palm.

A temporary accommodation for a sick friend was one thing. A daily routine of riding shotgun to my husband's office was an entirely different arrangement. I was the very last person to find out I had been replaced in my own car.

I did not scream. I did not throw the beige bag onto the asphalt. Nora watched me with wide, nervous eyes, and I refused to terrify a child over the boundary-crossing of adults.

I opened the rear door and slid in next to Nora.

Adrian relaxed his shoulders. He shut the front passenger door for Sienna, taking my silence as total surrender. He believed I would tolerate anything to keep the peace.

The drive home passed in suffocating silence. The moment the front door clicked shut behind us, the parking lot fight spilled straight into the living room.

"You are punishing a sick woman who just buried her husband," Adrian said, tossing his keys onto the console table.

Sienna huddled on the edge of the sofa. She wrapped her arms tightly around Nora.

"I can pack our bags tonight," Sienna whispered, burying her face in her daughter's hair. "I just didn't want Nora to lose another home."

Nora grabbed a fistful of Sienna's cardigan and began to cry.

"You can stay in the guest room," I told Sienna, keeping my voice perfectly level. "You can accept our help. But you do not get to put your name in my son's mother box. You do not get my school permissions."

Sienna squeezed her eyes shut, letting a single tear fall.

I shifted my focus to my husband. "And Adrian, you do not get to use pity to erase the boundaries of our marriage."

Adrian crossed his arms. "A secure person wouldn't be threatened by this."

"A person with boundaries says no," I replied.

Adrian uncrossed his arms, his jaw hardening. "Fine. Then you won't mind the new seating arrangement for Friday."

I waited.

"Sienna is coming with me to the CrossNova charity gala," he announced. "Her late husband's foundation is tied to the donors. You can stay home and watch the kids."

My chest tightened.

Seven years ago, I drafted the first CrossNova patient assistance protocols while rocking a teething Leo. I wrote the speeches. I organized the hospital partnerships. I stood next to Adrian at every single gala since its inception, smiling as the founder's wife.

Now, he wanted to give my public seat to the widow living in my guest room.

I did not argue. I walked over to my leather briefcase by the stairs. I unzipped the main compartment, pulled out the thick silver binder containing the gala's vendor contracts, and walked back to the sitting area.

I dropped the binder onto the glass coffee table. The heavy thud made Adrian flinch.

"Take it," I said.

Adrian stared at the silver cover. "What is this?"

"I am stepping down as the gala coordinator," I told him. "I will no longer do unpaid administrative work for your company. You and your new plus-one can figure out the catering and the silent auction yourselves."

Adrian laughed.

It was a short, dismissive sound that echoed off the high ceiling. He did not look worried. He looked amused.

"You will be mad for two days," he said, shaking his head. "You never actually leave us hanging."

He thought this was a tantrum. He truly believed I would eventually fold, pick up the binder, and fix everything behind the scenes so he could shine on stage.

Sienna stood up from the sofa. "Adrian, maybe I shouldn't go to the gala. I don't want Elena to—"

Bright red blood poured from Sienna's nostrils, splashing violently onto her white collar.

She swayed forward, her eyes rolling back.

Adrian lunged across the rug. He caught her waist just before she hit the floor.

Leo screamed, covering his face with his hands.

I grabbed Nora by the shoulders and pulled her behind my back, shielding the six-year-old from the sight of the blood rapidly pooling on the oak floorboards.

"Get a towel!" Adrian yelled, pressing his sleeve against Sienna's face.

Sienna's phone buzzed on the coffee table. The caller ID flashed Dr. Linus.

Adrian snatched the phone with his free hand and hit the speaker button.

"Sienna, your latest labs just came back," a panicked voice blared through the phone. "Your condition is deteriorating rapidly. You developed rare antibodies."

Adrian wiped blood from Sienna's chin. "What does that mean, Doctor?"

"It means normal transfusions will fail," Dr. Linus said. "We need a highly matched directed blood donor immediately, or she won't make it through the month."

Adrian tightened his grip on Sienna's waist.

"We will all get tested," Adrian told the doctor.

He ended the call and tossed the phone onto the cushion. He did not ask for my permission. He did not ask if I was willing to undergo a medical procedure for a woman who was actively taking over my life.

Adrian looked up from the bloody floor, his eyes locking directly onto mine.

"I booked your screening for eight tomorrow morning," he said.
