Chapter 2

The bustling noise of the café buzzed around me. I fiddled with the rim of my untouched coffee, lost in thought. Clara was out scouting the city, or more likely she was busy building a new identity for us. I just wanted to live an ordinary life but Clara adamantly refused. In just a short time, I became the city's most wealthy heiress.

It had been weeks since the encounter in the alley, but I couldn’t get those stormy blue eyes out of my mind—the way he moved, so effortlessly, as if danger was his constant companion.

A shadow fell over the table, and I looked up to find him standing there. My breath caught in my throat. He was exactly as I remembered—tall, with an effortless confidence that made everyone else seem smaller. His dark hair was tousled by the wind, and those piercing blue eyes met mine with a hint of recognition.

“You,” I breathed, the word slipped out before I could stop it.

He tilted his head, a slow, easy smile spreading across his face. “I didn’t think I’d see you again.”

I tried to compose myself, swallowing the rush of emotions that threatened to spill over. “Neither did I. I never got the chance to thank you properly… for what you did.”

He shrugged, sliding into the seat across from me, his movements smooth, like he was always meant to be here. “You looked like you needed help. I’m Rowen, by the way.”

Rowen. The name suited him, sharp and mysterious, like the man himself.

“Eliana,” I replied, trying to ignore the strange flutter in my chest. “I don’t usually find myself in situations like that.”

“Well, Eliana,” he said, leaning back in his chair, his gaze never leaving mine, “you’ve got to be careful who you trust in this city. Not everyone’s a friendly face.”

His words hung between us, laced with a deeper meaning, as if he could see right through the layers of my carefully guarded secrets. I should have been more cautious and more guarded, but instead, I found myself drawn in.

One coffee turned into another, then a walk along the river, and before I knew it, Rowen had become a fixture in my life—a dangerous, intoxicating presence I couldn’t resist. He was unpredictable, always on the move, pulling me into places I never thought I’d go. We spent nights racing through the city streets on his motorcycle, the wind tearing through my hair as I clung to him, feeling more alive than I had in years.

I found myself telling him things I had never told anyone. My life back home, my responsibilities, the suffocating weight of being a princess to a clan that didn’t understand me. I never told him the full truth—who I was, what I was—but Rowen seemed to understand in his own way. He didn’t ask too many questions, and I didn’t offer any more answers than necessary.

Rowen was reckless and wild, but he treated me like I was the only person in the world, his touch igniting sparks along my skin that I had never felt before. It was as if he could see the parts of me I kept hidden, the parts that didn’t fit into the mold of royalty or duty.

One night, after a particularly wild chase through the backstreets, we ended up on the roof of an old, abandoned building. The city sprawled beneath us, glittering like a sea of stars, and I could feel my heart pounding, not from fear, but from the sheer thrill of being beside him.

“Why do you keep coming back?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. It was a question that had been nagging at me since the day we met.

Rowen turned to me, his gaze intense, searching. “I could ask you the same thing.”

“I don’t know,” I admitted, the truth tumbling out before I could stop it. “It’s like… you’re the only thing that makes sense in this mess.”

He reached out, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear, his touch gentle yet electric. “Maybe that’s because you and I don’t fit into anyone’s plans but our own.”

I never thought I’d be the kind of girl who would get swept up in a fairytale romance. My life had always been too messy, too complicated for that. But Rowen made everything feel different. For a whole year, I let myself believe that we could have something real, something normal.

And then he proposed.

It happened on a quiet, rainy evening. Rowen had taken me out to dinner at our favorite little bistro by the river, the one with the flickering candles and mismatched chairs that always made it feel like we were the only two people in the world.

I should have known something was up when he kept fidgeting with his jacket, his eyes darting nervously around the room. But I was too caught up in the warmth of his smile, the way his fingers brushed against mine, sending sparks through my skin.

And then, just as we were finishing dessert, he dropped to one knee.

I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat as he pulled out a small, velvet box. The ring inside was simple but beautiful—a delicate silver band with a tiny, sparkling diamond that caught the candlelight perfectly. It wasn’t extravagant, but it was exactly my style.

“Eliana,” he said, his voice steady even though his hands were trembling. “From the moment I met you, I knew you were different. You’ve brought so much light into my life, and I can’t imagine spending another day without you. Will you marry me?”
