My Runaway Mate Chapter 1

The sun had barely dipped below the horizon when we crossed the border from Wilderford Valley into the mortal realm, the veil between our worlds parting like a thin mist. I felt the familiar twinge in my gut, the unsettling mix of excitement and unease that always came with leaving the safety of our territory.

The air in the mortal realm felt different—thinner, tinged with the scent of gasoline and human sweat. I pulled my hood tighter, hoping the fabric would shield the distinct silver glow of my eyes, the telltale sign of my lineage. Beside me, Clara moved with a grace that belied her deadly nature, like a predator sizing up prey.

“Stay close, Eliana,” Clara muttered, scanning the crowded street. Her tone was tight with tension, her fingers twitching at the hilt of the concealed dagger strapped to her thigh.

I nodded, trying to suppress my unease. Venturing into the mortal realm without a proper guard was risky, but it was much better than staying in the mansion. Clara was already on edge. After all, she never liked being this close to many unsuspecting humans.

We turned down a narrow alley, hoping to avoid the crowds when suddenly, I felt it—a ripple of danger, like static in the air. Before I could react, three men stepped out from the shadows, blocking our path. They were scruffy, their eyes filled with the kind of malice that only comes from desperation.

“What do we have here?” one of them sneered, his gaze raking over us with the kind of hunger that sent a chill down my spine.

Clara was on him in a heartbeat, her movements swift and precise. She had one of the men pinned against the wall before he even realized she’d moved.

“Clara, no!” I hissed, grabbing her arm before she could reveal her strength. “We can’t afford to expose ourselves.”

Her golden eyes flared with barely contained fury. “These humans are nothing. Let me deal with them.”

I squeezed her arm tighter, shaking my head. We couldn’t risk drawing attention, not here, not now. I was about to reason with the men, to plead or bribe our way out, when suddenly, a dark figure appeared from the other end of the alley. He moved like a shadow, swift and silent, a knife flashing in his hand as he disarmed the first man with a single fluid motion. The second attacker lunged at him, but he sidestepped, knocking the assailant to the ground with a practiced ease that spoke of years of combat.

The stranger was tall, his presence commanding, even in the dim light. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from him. He was human, I was sure of it, but there was something else—something fierce and untamed like he didn’t quite belong in this world either. The last man hesitated, fear flickering in his eyes before he turned and bolted down the alley, disappearing into the night.

The stranger turned to us, his eyes meeting mine for the briefest of moments. They were stormy blue, deep, and magnetic, and I felt an inexplicable pull—like gravity was working differently around him.

“Are you two alright?” His voice was smooth and calm as if saving strangers from kidnappers was just another Tuesday for him.

Clara stepped forward, still on guard, but I held her back, unable to find my voice. My heart was hammering against my ribs, not from fear, but from something else entirely.

“Yes,” I managed to say, my voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you.”

He gave a small, almost amused smile. “Be careful out here. Not everyone is so lucky.”

And just like that, he turned to leave, blending back into the shadows as if he’d never been there at all. But I couldn’t look away, my chest tight with a strange ache. Clara was talking, saying something about humans and recklessness, but her words faded into the background. All I could think about was him—how he had appeared out of nowhere, saved us, and disappeared before I could even ask his name.

Standing there in that alley, surrounded by the scent of danger and fading adrenaline, I knew one thing for certain—I had never felt anything like this before.
