Chapter 3

Lorelei P. O. V

After Prosecutor Dylan rescued me that night, he rushed me to the hospital. I was immediately wheeled into the operating room, because my stomach wouldn't stop bleeding after stabbed three times.

I slipped into unconsciousness, only to wake up staring at the blinding white ceiling.

I looked around, spotting Dylan talking to a doctor. I couldn't hear them clearly, but their serious expressions were evident.

"Look, she's awake," Dylan said, turning towards me.

He and the doctor approached my bed. I wanted to sit up, but the pain in my stitched-up stomach was unbearable.

"Lorelei, don't move," Dylan said, his voice firm. I remained lying down.

The doctor looked at me. "Miss Lorelei, I'm sorry to tell you this, but the fetus in your womb didn't survive. The length of the knife that stabbed you pierced your uterus," the doctor explained.

His words didn't register at first. But then, seconds later, tears began to stream down my face. The pain was overwhelming. For the third time, I had suffered a miscarriage. This was supposed to be the reason I fought, the reason I clung to hope, but it seemed fate had other plans. I was not meant to be a mother.

As I recalled my husband's betrayal and my stepsister's treachery, a double blow that left me reeling, I felt a crushing despair. I didn't know if I could even rise from this abyss.

After the doctor left, Dylan stayed by my side, watching me cry. "Why is the world so unfair to me? I haven't done anything wrong, yet I'm constantly punished?" I sobbed.

"Because you're a fool. You let people manipulate you," Dylan said, his words surprisingly comforting.

"It's my fault? I didn't want to be manipulated." I snapped, wiping my tears with a tissue.

"I'm not blaming you, but you're a lawyer, you have the skills to read people's actions. Didn't you notice something was wrong?" He asked, with a sarcasm.

"I noticed things, but I trusted my husband. I thought he would never betray me. I can't believe my stepsister was his mistress. I think I'm going crazy," I sighed, trying to calm myself.

"So what are you going to do? Just let them betray you?" Dylan asked, his voice sharp.

I thought for a moment, a new determination hardening my resolve. "I'll divorce him. That's the solution to all of this."

"That's it? You're not going to press charges for adultery? What he did was against the law. You could sue him for damages," Dylan suggested, he wanted to take the case if I needed his help.

"I need to think about it carefully. Besides, I need a long rest. Can you please stop pushing me to make a decision?" I said. I didn't like him dictating my choices.

A silence fell between us. My mind drifted back to the scene I had witnessed, Dylan taking down the criminals one by one. My skin prickled as I looked at him, still unable to believe he had killed for me.

"Dylan, what are you going to do about the people you killed?" I asked. He was sure to be arrested for using violence.

"Killed? I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean," he replied, his expression unreadable.

My brow furrowed. "What? I saw everything. You killed those men at the corner."

"I didn't. I sent them to jail," Dylan insisted.

My confusion deepened. I remembered it vividly. He had killed those men, beating them mercilessly, their bodies covered in blood. I wasn't mistaken, I wasn't hallucinating.

"Don't lie to me, Dylan. I know you're hiding something." I locked eyes with him, recalling the crimson hue of his gaze that night.

"Lorelei, you're not just dumb, you're delusional," he blurted.

Upon returning home, I surprised Matthew and Kourtney with the document I carried: a divorce agreement.

Shock registered on their faces, especially Matthew's. He knew exactly why I was doing this.

"Lorelei, what's the matter? Why do you want a divorce?" Matthew asked. He reached out to touch me, but I recoiled.

"You cheated on me with my step-sister," I stated. I saw Kourtney's guilty reaction, but there was no remorse in her eyes.

"That's not true! Lorelei, believe me. I didn't intend to cheat. I wasn't in my right mind. Kourtney slipped something into my drink, that's why I missed our anniversary," Matthew explained, his voice pleading.

"I don't care about your excuses, Matthew. No matter what you say, you cheated on me," I dictated. I was certain of it, I had evidence, but I would hold onto it for now. It would be useful in court.

Tears welled up in Matthew's eyes as he desperately tried to convince me. Kourtney stood silently by, watching the unfolding drama.

"This is all your fault!" Matthew accused, pointing at Kourtney.

"Don't blame me, Matthew! You wanted this to happen. Why can't you admit you cheated on her because you chose me?"

"Chose you? I would never choose you, Kourtney. You're a cunning woman. You took advantage of me! I knew it! You wanted to destroy one relationship, but I won't let that happen!"

My anger flared, directed at both of them. "Stop it, both of you! You're both guilty, so stop blaming each other. All I want is for you to leave!" I yelled.

Matthew knelt before me, pleading for forgiveness. But Kourtney, with a chillingly calm voice, added fuel to the fire.

"You can't make me leave, Lorelei. I'm pregnant."
