Chapter 2

Crestfall smelled like rain and woodsmoke. Clean. Neutral. No pack scent marking the borders, no hierarchy pressing down on the air. I'd been here two weeks, and I still woke up expecting someone to tell me what to do.

No one did.

I found work quickly. An elderly she-wolf named Maren needed help with her garden—her hands were too stiff with age to pull weeds or harvest the medicinal plants she'd been growing for decades. I recognized half the plants from Elena's sickroom. Valerian root for sleep. Arnica for inflammation. Comfrey for bone pain.

Maren watched me work the first day, her sharp eyes tracking every movement. When I finished, she handed me a small cloth pouch.

"Payment," she said. "And if you know what you're doing with these, I have others who need help."

I did know. I'd learned by necessity, sitting beside Elena's bed while she slept, reading the old healer texts she kept on her shelf because there was nothing else to do in that room. I'd learned which teas eased her breathing and which poultices reduced the swelling in her joints. I'd learned alone, because no one else had cared to.

Word spread quietly. An older wolf with joint pain. A mother whose child had a persistent cough. A widower who couldn't sleep. They came to Maren's garden, and Maren sent them to me.

I didn't call myself a healer. I just did the work.

The hollow mark on my neck ached every night. A cold, empty throb that woke me in the dark. I pressed my fingers against it sometimes, feeling the raised scar tissue where Miles's mark had been. It didn't hurt the way it had in the ceremonial hall—that searing cold had faded—but the absence was worse. Like a tooth pulled, leaving a socket my tongue couldn't stop probing.

My wolf was silent. I'd heard her scream the night of the rejection, that raw howl from somewhere deep inside my chest. Since then—nothing. Just the hollow mark and the quiet.

I told myself it was better this way.

Back in Shadowvale, things were falling apart.

I didn't hear about it directly. I heard it the way rogues and neutral-territory wolves hear things—through whispers, through travelers passing through Crestfall, through the careful way people didn't quite meet my eyes when they mentioned Shadowvale Pack.

The eastern border ward had failed. A small rogue incursion—nothing catastrophic, but enough to rattle the pack. Two Delta families had formally petitioned to relocate. The pack house provisioning was in disarray.

I felt nothing when I heard it. Not satisfaction. Not vindication. Just a distant, clinical acknowledgment that I'd been right about what I'd been holding together.

Miles would figure it out eventually. Or he wouldn't. It wasn't my problem anymore.

But late at night, when the hollow mark ached and I couldn't sleep, I thought about the ward maintenance schedule I'd left behind. The one in my handwriting, listing every repair I'd made over five years. It told him what I'd done. It didn't tell him how.

I wondered if he'd searched my old room yet. I wondered if he'd found the schedule and realized he couldn't read half the notes because they were written in the shorthand I'd developed for myself, the codes I'd used to track which wards needed seasonal reinforcement and which were structurally compromised.

I wondered if he'd even looked.

Elena was dying.

I heard about it from a traveling healer who'd passed through Shadowvale on his way to Crestfall. He mentioned it casually, the way you mention weather.

"Former Luna's not doing well. Stroke complications. Shame—no one's tending her properly."

I set down the valerian root I'd been sorting. My hands were steady.

"What do you mean, no one's tending her?"

He shrugged. "New Luna won't go near the sickroom. Says it's beneath her station. Pack members are following her lead. The old woman's alone most days."

I thought about Elena calling my name in the dark. I thought about the cold broth trays I used to warm, the bandages I used to change, the way she never once said thank you but always relaxed when I walked into the room.

I thought about how she'd sided with Miles every single time. How she'd looked at my cracked hands and never seen them.

The hollow mark throbbed.

"That's unfortunate," I said quietly.

The healer looked at me for a long moment. Then he nodded and moved on.

I went back to sorting valerian root. My hands didn't shake.

Liam Hayes—Miles's Beta—defected three weeks after I left.

I heard about it from Maren, who heard it from a cousin in a neighboring pack. Liam had formally requested a meeting with Miles, presented a written analysis of Shadowvale's operational collapse, and been dismissed. He'd walked out of the pack house that afternoon and hadn't come back.

I remembered Liam. Steady. Competent. The kind of Beta who noticed things.

He'd noticed me once, carrying supplies to the eastern ward during a storm. He'd offered to help. I'd said no—I was used to doing it alone—but he'd walked with me anyway, not talking, just present.

I wondered what his analysis had said. I wondered if he'd mentioned my name.

Probably not. I'd never been in the official records. Just the ghost in the supply ledgers, the unsigned notes in the ward schedules, the systems that ran because someone—no one could quite remember who—had set them up years ago.

I folded the cloth pouch Maren had given me and tucked it into my bag. Tomorrow I had three patients. An elderly wolf with circulation problems. A young mother whose child had a fever. A widower who couldn't sleep.

I would do the work. I would build something that belonged only to me.

And at night, when the hollow mark ached and my silent wolf stirred just enough to remind me she was still there, I would press my fingers against the scar and tell myself I was better off.

I almost believed it.
