Chapter 3

The letter came on a Thursday, delivered by a runner who wouldn't step past Maren's gate.

It had a wax seal. I hadn't seen a wax seal since Shadowvale's formal pack correspondence, and even then Miles handled those. I opened it standing in the garden with dirt still under my nails.

Ironcveil Lycan Court. Formal request for a personal healer. High-ranking Luna, post-birth complications, extended recovery, specific expertise required in prolonged bedside care.

Maren read it over my shoulder without asking permission, the way she did everything.

"Ironveil," she said. "That's Lycan Court. That's not a pack, girl, that's the ones the packs answer to."

"I know."

"They're paying more than you'll make here in two years."

"I know that too."

She squinted at me. "Then why do you look like someone asked you to swallow glass?"

I folded the letter. "Because it means leaving Crestfall."

But that wasn't why I said yes. The symptoms in the request were what did it — persistent weakness in the legs, poor sleep, pain that migrated without pattern, a body that had been through something and forgotten how to come back from it. I'd read that same list a hundred times in Elena's sickroom. I knew what teas eased it. I knew which movements to start with and in what order. I knew the exact week when a patient stops trying because the improvement is too slow to feel.

I could help her. That was the whole reason.

I packed my kit — the dried roots in labeled tins, the mortar, the clean linen wraps Maren had sewn for me. And I put on the clothes I'd earned here. Not the faded flannel I'd worn on Shadowvale's borders, not the oversized work shirts with holes at the elbow. Crestfall healer's attire. Gray, plain, clean, cut to fit me.

I looked at myself in Maren's cracked mirror and didn't recognize the woman standing there. That felt like progress.

Ironveil's summit grounds were built into a ridge, all stone and glass and old timber, and the air pressed different up there. Heavier. Older. Lycan territory has a weight to it that pack territory doesn't.

Seraphina Wood was propped up in a bed too grand for her, three days into a recovery that should have been going better.

"They keep telling me to rest," she said, when I introduced myself. "I've been resting for six weeks. I'm going to lose my mind."

"You're not going to get better by resting. You're going to get better by moving very small amounts at exactly the right times." I set down my kit. "May I see your hands?"

She blinked, then held them out. Cold fingers. Poor circulation. Exactly what I'd expected.

"You're the first person who's asked me for anything instead of telling me what I can't do," she said.

"That's the treatment," I said. "Everything else is just tea."

She laughed. It surprised both of us.

On the third afternoon I stepped into the corridor outside her chambers to prepare a compress, and someone rounded the corner and stopped.

I felt it before I looked up. The air changed — not the way it does when an Alpha enters a room, that pushing-down pressure I'd lived under for five years. This was different. This was the sensation of standing at the edge of something very deep.

He was tall. Dark hair, a dark coat, the kind of stillness that most people can't hold. He wasn't looking at me the way men look at strangers. He was looking at me like he'd walked into a wall.

And in my chest — deep, where nothing had moved in weeks — something shifted.

My wolf.

A warmth. Barely a flicker. Gone before I could name it.

I stepped back half a pace, out of the air current between us. Old habit. Downwind. Don't impose.

"Is Luna Seraphina's recovery progressing well?" he asked. His voice was low and even, and it took him a beat too long to say it.

"Her circulation is improving. She slept six hours last night, which is four more than she's been managing. If she keeps to the schedule, she'll be walking the corridor unassisted within two weeks."

He nodded slowly. "Two weeks."

"If she keeps to the schedule."

Something moved at the corner of his mouth. Not quite a smile. "She won't."

"Then three."

He looked at me a moment longer. His eyes dropped — briefly, not rudely — to my hands. To the cracked knuckles, the old scar down my left palm. Then to my neck, where the hollow mark sat under my collar.

He didn't ask. He just nodded once and continued down the corridor.

He didn't go far. I heard him stop, maybe twenty feet on, and stand there.

Cedar and rain. That was what the air smelled like after he passed.

I didn't have time to think about it, because two hours later I heard heels on stone and my whole body went cold before my brain caught up.

Jazlyn Miller, in summit formal wear, turning down my corridor with Miles half a step behind her.

She stopped in front of me. Close enough to smell.

"Cora." She said it warmly. "You look well. Working, still. That's good." Her eyes went to my throat, and her head tilted. "Oh — your scar. Does it ache? In the cold, I mean. I've heard rejected marks do that. Poor thing. Some she-wolves just don't have the strength to hold a bond. It isn't your fault, really."

I didn't answer.

Behind her, Miles's jaw was tight. He hadn't spoken. He hadn't looked away from me either — not once, not the way he had in that hall.

His hands were shaking. Just slightly.

Then he stepped past Jazlyn, and his voice dropped into the Alpha tone.

"Kneel."

The air pressurized. It slammed down the corridor like a door closing. Two Ironveil attendants down the hall flinched and dropped their eyes. A servant went to one knee without meaning to.

The command hit me and found nothing to hold.

No bond. No thread. Nothing to grip.

It died.

I stood exactly where I was. My spine straight, my hands loose at my sides, and I looked at Miles Lynch with a stillness I didn't have to manufacture.

I didn't move at all.
