My Pups and I Say Goodbye
Chapter 1
The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery light through the large windows of the cabin. The air was thick with the scent of pine, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves outside. I stood in the cozy living room, cradling my round belly as I tried to calm the racing thoughts in my mind.
Just a few days away from giving birth, I felt the weight of impending motherhood mixed with a nagging anxiety I couldn’t shake. My phone buzzed, pulling me from my thoughts. It was a call from Jenna, my closest friend and confidante in the pack.
“Hey, Mira! I just got some information that I think you need to hear,” she said, her voice urgent.
“Is everything okay?” I asked, a sense of dread settling in my stomach.
“Not really. I found out Leo has been sending a lot of money to a woman named Zara—like, $50,000 every month,” she said quickly, her words tumbling out.
“What? That can’t be true,” I stammered, disbelief washing over me.
“It is. I saw the bank statements myself. It’s been going on for two years,” she continued, her tone unwavering. “Right around the time you lost your first pups.”
My heart dropped. The memories of that devastating time flooded back, and a hollow ache spread through my chest. “What’s he thinking?”
“Mira, I don’t know. But you need to look into it. He’s hiding something, and you deserve to know what’s really going on,” Jenna urged.
Before I could respond, my phone vibrated again, and I saw a new message from an unknown number. Hesitantly, I opened it. The words made my blood run cold:
“Hey, beautiful. Hope you’re enjoying your new life. Just wanted to remind you that Leo and I have something special going on. Can’t wait for you to meet our little one!”
I dropped the phone, my breath hitching in my throat. I felt the walls closing in around me, and I grasped my belly tighter as if it could protect me from the reality crashing down.
“Mira? Are you there?” Jenna’s voice broke through my shock.
I inhaled sharply, struggling to find my voice. “She’s pregnant. With his pups, a week ago I received a text from someone telling me she’s pregnant with Leo’s pups, but I disregarded it.”
Silence fell between us, the weight of the revelation settling heavily in the air. “Oh my god… I’m so sorry,” Jenna whispered, her sympathy palpable. “What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” I replied, my voice trembling. “I need to process this. I can’t confront him yet. Not when I’m this close to giving birth.”
“Just promise me you’ll be careful. You don’t have to face this alone,” Jenna said gently.
As we hung up, I felt a mixture of rage and heartbreak that crashed over me like a tidal wave. Leo had betrayed me in the worst way possible, and the pain felt insurmountable. I sank onto the couch, staring at the flickering flames in the fireplace. The warmth of the fire differed sharply with the coldness seeping into my heart.
How could he do this to me? Memories of our time together flooded my mind—his laughter, our plans for the future, the way he held me when I was scared. Each moment felt like a dagger, twisting deeper as I replayed them. Had every promise been a lie? How had I been so blind?
The fire crackled softly, but it felt distant, muted beneath the weight of my despair. I closed my eyes, wishing for a moment of clarity, a glimmer of hope. But all I found was darkness and betrayal. My breaths came in shallow gasps as the reality of the situation sank in. He was going to be a father to someone else’s child. The thought was unbearable.
I pressed my palms against my eyes, trying to block out the tears that threatened to spill. But it was futile. The tears flowed freely, hot and relentless, each one a testament to the hurt that clawed at my insides. I let the sobs wrack my body, each cry echoing my grief and sense of betrayal.
How could I have trusted him? I had opened my heart, and in return, he had shattered it. The anger surged within me, but it was quickly consumed by the consumingsorrow that followed. I couldn’t stop thinking about the life growing inside me—the baby that would never know a father who truly cared.
I curled up on the couch, hugging my knees to my chest as the night wore on. The world outside was quiet, but inside, my mind was a chaotic storm. Images of Leo and her flashed before me, laughing and happy, while I was left alone in this hollow ache. I cried for hours, letting the tears flow as I mourned not just for myself, but for the future I had envisioned—a future that was now slipping through my fingers like sand.
I wrapped my arms around my belly, whispering softly, “We’ll get through this, my little one. No matter what happens, you and I will find a way to be strong together.”
