My Mother-in-Law’s Secret Love History

When my mother-in-law, Margaret, sells our house, she pushes me past my breaking point. I refuse to play her victim. When she stages a dramatic leap, I hand her the stool; when she turns violent, I call the police. Desperate to reclaim control, Margaret demands that her son Caleb punish me for my defiance. But Caleb refuses to play along. Instead of retaliating, he dismisses her demands, openly declaring his deep, unyielding obsession with me and proving he cannot live without his wife.

Chapter 2

I couldn’t help but wonder if Margaret was seriously out of her mind.

Just as I was thinking this, the man who had been quiet up until now spoke up. “Ah, this is all my Leo’s fault—he’s so mischievous and doesn’t listen. I’m really sorry, so sorry about this,” he said with a grin.

As soon as he finished speaking, Margaret started smiling and apologizing. “It’s not Leo’s fault at all! Like I said, it’s just a little bit of roughhousing, and besides, boys are naturally a bit rowdy. It’s really no big deal.”

I couldn’t stomach watching them put on their little act.

So, I turned to Ruby and got ready to leave.

I was planning on waiting until Caleb came back and then we’d deal with the whole mess together.

Just as I stood up, someone knocked on the door.

A group of unfamiliar people wandered into the living room, and I was left standing there, completely confused. What, is today some kind of impromptu gathering?

Before I could even voice my confusion, a person who looked like a real estate agent greeted Margaret and started going on about our house.

They started from the living room, then moved to the kitchen, and then the bedrooms. And at random intervals, they were snapping pictures with their phones.

I was even more lost now, no idea what was going on.

It wasn’t until one of them asked, “How much are you asking for this house, if you’re really serious about selling?” that I finally understood.

Oh, they were trying to sell the house.

Margaret completely ignored the frustrated look on my face and kept up the house tour. When they started discussing the price, I couldn’t hold back anymore and asked, “Who exactly is talking about selling this house?”

Margaret, completely unphased, shot back, “I’m the one who wants to buy it. What’s wrong with that?”

It wasn’t that it was wrong, but I couldn’t help asking, “Don’t you need to show the property title when selling a house?”

At that, the real estate agent’s expression shifted, and they glanced at Margaret.

What was he looking at Margaret for? The house wasn’t even under her name.

Once the agent realized the situation, he immediately called Caleb. After confirming that Caleb definitely wasn’t selling this house, he sighed deeply, gathered his team, and left.

Once the crowd was gone, Caleb joined our family meeting via phone.

The child who had been crying earlier was now asleep on the couch, and the man who looked to be in his thirties sat next to Margaret, introducing himself. “I’m Victor Langley.”

As he said this, he took Margaret’s hand in his once again.

I couldn’t help but feel like this scene was burning my retinas, so I sent Ruby to the study to watch TV.

Then, Margaret and the man—Victor—began to tell me and my husband, who was far away, the story of how they met.

Margaret said she was getting remarried, that they were truly in love, and asked for our support in their relationship.

Supporting their love was fine by me.

But supporting the sale of the house? That felt off.

Margaret was acting like she had completely lost her mind. “We’re getting married anyway, so after we’re married, we’ll need a place to live, right?”

That actually made sense. But I couldn’t fully wrap my head around it.

If they absolutely had to get married and had no place to stay, Margaret’s current house—one she’d only bought a few years ago and with three bedrooms—was more than enough space for the two of them.

We didn’t even come back often, so they could easily move in.

But Margaret refused. “Since we’re newlyweds, why would we want to live in an old house?”
