Rejected by My Alpha Mate, Claimed by My Royal Fate Chapter 1
The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.
I felt it snap before Jonas finished speaking—a cold, surgical severing that started at the mark on my neck and ripped inward like a cord being yanked through my chest. My knees hit the dais hard. The great hall of the Ironvale pack house blurred at the edges.
Jonas stood above me, his hand still gripping my wrist from when he'd dragged me forward. His voice carried across the silent room, formal and final: "I, Jonas Hayes, Alpha of Ironvale, reject you, Lydia Clark, as my mate and Luna."
The mark on my neck went ice-cold. Then it went empty. Like a door slamming shut on a room that had never existed.
I couldn't breathe. The pain wasn't sharp—it was deep, biological, something tearing at a level beneath muscle and bone. My wolf, silent my entire life, didn't stir. She had never stirred. That was why this was happening.
Jonas released my wrist. I stayed on my knees, shaking, staring at the polished wood beneath me. Somewhere in the crowd, I heard Kendall Bishop's soft, sympathetic sigh. I didn't need to look to know where she was sitting. Front row. One hand resting on her belly.
"Kendall is dying," Jonas said, his tone measured, almost kind. "She has weeks, maybe less. Her final wish is to be marked as my mate before the Moon Goddess calls her home. I will not deny her that."
Lies. All of it. But no one in this hall would question him. No one ever questioned Jonas.
I pressed my palms flat against the dais and pushed myself upright. My legs felt like water, but I locked my knees and stood. The hall was silent. Fifty wolves, maybe more, all watching. Waiting to see if I would cry. If I would beg.
I looked at Jonas. Really looked at him. His jaw was set, his eyes hard. He believed this was mercy. That rejecting me cleanly, publicly, was kinder than letting me linger as a wolfless embarrassment.
I didn't say a word. I turned and walked toward the doors.
Behind me, someone exhaled—relief, maybe, or disappointment that I hadn't made a scene. My legs carried me down the aisle, past rows of wolves who wouldn't meet my eyes. The double doors were twenty feet away. Then ten.
Kendall's voice floated after me, soft and sweet. "Lydia, I'm so sorry. I never wanted—"
I kept walking.
The doors opened under my hands, and I stepped out into the cold morning air. The bond's absence sat in my chest like a stone. I had nothing. No pack. No mate. No wolf to howl her grief into the sky.
But I was still standing.
---
The Beta's office smelled like old paper and coffee. Dorian Vale sat behind his desk, the pack separation documents already spread out in front of him. He didn't look at me when I walked in.
Jonas leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. "You'll want to move fast," he said, almost conversational. "Rogues don't last long without a pack. I give you a month, maybe less."
I pulled out the chair across from Dorian and sat. My hands were steady when I picked up the pen.
"Sign here," Dorian said quietly, tapping the first page. "And here. And initial the bottom."
I signed. Page after page. My name in black ink, severing every tie I'd spent a year building. Every alliance I'd brokered. Every training pact I'd negotiated. Gone.
Jonas watched from the doorway, smirking.
I was halfway through the last page when Dorian went rigid. His eyes glazed—mind-link. His face drained of color.
"What?" Jonas straightened, frowning.
Dorian blinked, his gaze snapping back into focus. He looked at me, then at Jonas. "Three packs just severed their training agreements. Simultaneously."
"Which three?" Jonas's voice sharpened.
"Crescent Ridge. Ember Falls. Northpine."
The alliances I'd built. Every one of them.
I capped the pen and slid the documents across the desk. "We're done here."
Jonas stared at Dorian, his jaw working. "Get them back. Call their Alphas. Offer—"
"They won't answer," I said, standing. "Those alliances were personal. You just ended them."
I walked out. Behind me, Jonas's voice rose, barking orders at Dorian. But I was already gone.
---
The banquet was three days later. I only came back to collect my records from the pack house office—financial reports, correspondence, everything I'd kept meticulously organized during my time as Luna. I needed them if I was going to survive as a rogue.
The estate was full of wolves from half a dozen packs, all gathered for some regional nonsense Jonas was hosting to prove Ironvale was still strong. I slipped in through the side entrance, avoiding the main hall.
I was halfway across the foyer when I heard Kendall scream.
"She hit me! She tried to hurt the baby!"
I froze.
Kendall stood in the center of the banquet hall, both hands clutching her stomach, her face twisted in pain. Every wolf in the room turned to stare. At her. Then at me.
Jonas crossed the hall in three strides.
I didn't see his hand coming. The backhand caught me across the face with full Alpha force, snapping my head to the side. I hit the stone floor hard, my shoulder slamming into the ground.
Pain exploded through my skull. The room spun. I tasted copper.
And then—something else. A deep, wrenching pull low in my abdomen. Sharp. Wrong.
Warmth spread beneath me. Wet and sticky.
I looked down. Blood. Dark and spreading across the stone.
The hall went silent.
Healer Maren Ashby shoved through the crowd, dropping to her knees beside me. Her hands hovered over my stomach, her face going pale. "She was pregnant," she said, her voice shaking. "She's miscarrying."
Jonas stared at the blood. At me. His face was blank.
Kendall gripped his arm, whispering something urgent in his ear.
He turned away. "Clean it up," he said to two Omegas standing frozen by the wall. Then he escorted Kendall out.
No one moved to help me.
I pulled myself off the floor. My legs shook, but I stayed upright. I walked to the office, retrieved my records, and left the estate. Blood still on my dress. My pup—Jonas's pup—gone before I'd even known it existed.
---
The motel room was small and cold. I sat on the edge of the bed, still wearing the blood-stained dress. I couldn't move. Couldn't think.
The grief hit me all at once—a tidal wave I hadn't seen coming. I'd lost a pup I never knew I was carrying. A pup Jonas had killed with his own hand.
Something inside me cracked. Deep. Volcanic.
A voice I had never heard rumbled through my mind, low and furious.
*"I am Seraphine. They poisoned us. But I am awake now—and we are not what they think we are."*
My eyes snapped open. I looked at the mirror across the room.
My reflection stared back. But the eyes weren't mine. They were molten gold. Not amber. Gold.
I didn't understand. But I felt it—something immense and powerful coiled inside me, waiting.
