Chapter 2

Three days into Omega labor, my hands had stopped shaking when I wrung out the mop. The wolfsbane they'd mixed into the cleaning solutions left a metallic taste at the back of my throat and a fog in my chest where my wolf used to stir, but I'd learned to work through it. Floors. Laundry. The healer's clinic drains, which no one else wanted because the smell of blood and antiseptic clung to your skin for hours afterward.

I didn't mind the clinic. It was quiet after dark, and Elena Marsh kept late hours.

It was past eleven when I carried the bucket down the east corridor toward the clinic's service entrance. The main hall was empty, the overhead lights dimmed to conserve power. My bare feet made no sound on the stone. I'd stopped wearing shoes two days ago — the Omega quarters didn't have enough pairs to go around, and I'd given mine to a younger she-wolf whose feet were bleeding.

I was ten feet from the clinic door when I heard voices.

Cody's voice. Low, controlled, the register he used when he was managing something he didn't want recorded. And Elena's voice, clinical and precise, the way she sounded when she was delivering test results.

I stopped. Set the bucket down without a sound. Pressed my palm flat against the cold stone wall.

"Kaison's bloodline scent carries zero maternal markers from the Luna," Elena said. "The pup's lineage is exclusively Evans-Munoz. I've run the analysis three times. There's no trace of Gracelynn's bloodline in him."

Silence. Then Cody's voice, quieter. "And the other infant?"

"The one given to Shadowfang three years ago was the Luna's biological child," Elena said. "I confirmed it from the records you asked me to seal. Alpha, I need to know — does she know?"

"She doesn't," Cody said. "And she won't."

The stone floor beneath my feet cracked.

Not a hairline fracture. A jagged split that ran three feet in both directions, the sound like a gunshot in the empty corridor. I looked down and saw the break spreading outward from where I stood, the edges glowing faintly, a gold I'd never seen in Ironmaw stone.

My chest felt like something had detonated inside it. Not grief. Not yet. Just the seismic shift of a foundation giving way, the moment when you realize the ground you've been standing on was never solid at all.

My eyes burned. I blinked, and the corridor sharpened into focus — too sharp, every detail suddenly vivid, the grain of the stone, the scent of wolfsbane in my own skin, the sound of Cody's heartbeat through the wall, steady and unbothered.

I heard his footsteps turn toward the door.

I moved without thinking. Grabbed the bucket. Turned and walked back down the corridor, my feet silent on the cracked stone, my breath controlled, my body operating on pure instinct while my mind tried to catch up with what I'd just heard.

Kaison wasn't mine. Had never been mine. The pup I'd nursed, rocked, sang to sleep every night for three years — Alyssa's child. And my infant, my biological child, the one I thought I'd lost to a stillbirth Cody told me was my body's failure — given to Shadowfang. Traded. Like a bargaining chip.

I made it to the Omega quarters before my knees buckled. I set the bucket down carefully, because if I dropped it someone would hear, and then I sank onto the narrow cot in the corner and pressed both palms flat against my sternum, trying to hold something inside my chest that felt like it was trying to tear its way out.

My wolf. Awake. Not the distant vibration I'd felt at the memorial. Awake and clawing at the inside of my ribs, furious, howling something I couldn't translate into words.

I bit down on my wrist to keep the sound in.

---

Cody found the cracked clinic floor the next morning.

I heard about it from the Omega kitchen staff during breakfast prep — Marcus Webb had been called in, Derek Holt had questioned every wolf on shift, and no one could explain how stone that thick had fractured overnight without anyone hearing it happen.

I kept my head down and scrubbed the counters.

By noon, Cody had ordered double surveillance on me. I felt it the way you feel eyes on your back — Beta Garrett stationed at the end of the Omega corridor, Delta Simmons shadowing me during meal service, Marcus himself watching from the main hall balcony when I carried linens through the east wing.

And the wolfsbane in the cleaning supplies doubled. I could smell it the moment I opened the storage closet — concentrated, medicinal, enough to knock a weak wolf unconscious if they weren't careful. I soaked the mop and felt the fog settle heavier in my chest, pressing my wolf back down into the dark.

But I didn't stop listening.

During meal service in the main hall that evening, I positioned myself near the Alpha table, refilling water glasses, invisible the way Omegas were supposed to be. Cody was speaking to Marcus in the low register that meant pack business.

"Donovan Reed arrives in four days," Cody said. "Crestfall delegation, full honors. I want the alliance finalized before he leaves."

"And the Luna?" Marcus asked carefully.

Cody's jaw tightened. "Gracelynn will serve at the banquet. Visible. Mute. A demonstration of Ironmaw discipline."

I refilled his glass without my hand shaking. Moved to the next table. Filed every word away like a blade going into a sheath.

Donovan Reed. Crestfall Pack. Four days.

And Sera Reed, his Luna — a she-wolf I'd met once, two years ago, at a territorial summit. She'd asked me questions Cody didn't like, the kind that suggested she saw more than people wanted her to.

One conversation. One planted truth. One set of outside ears.

That was all I needed.

---

Cody summoned me to the Alpha study that night.

I stood in front of his desk, my hands loose at my sides, my Omega work tunic still damp from the evening's laundry rotation. He didn't look up from the papers he was signing.

"You'll attend the alliance banquet as a server," he said. "You'll be visible. You will not speak unless directly addressed by a guest, and then only to confirm orders. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Alpha," I said.

He set the pen down. Looked at me. And then his aura flooded the room.

Not the full Alpha tone that paralyzed my body. Just sustained pressure, a weight in the air that made it hard to breathe, a reminder of exactly who held the leash. It pressed against my skin, my chest, the bond-mark on my neck that still connected us even though I'd stopped feeling anything through it except his commands.

I stood in it. Didn't flinch. Pressed my palm flat against my thigh and felt something push back — not my wolf, not exactly, but something deeper, older, a current running beneath my skin that I didn't have a name for.

Cody's eyes narrowed. He was watching me the way you watch machinery that's started making a sound it's not supposed to make.

"You're dismissed," he said.

No Alpha tone. No bond-command. Just words.

I turned and walked out, my spine straight, my heartbeat steady, and I didn't let myself think about what it meant that he'd let me leave without forcing my submission.

Behind me, through the half-open door, I heard him pick up his phone.

"Marcus," he said quietly. "Increase the wolfsbane again. I want her sedated by the banquet."

I kept walking. Four days. That was all I had.

Four days to stay conscious. Four days to reach Sera Reed. Four days before Cody realized that the crack in the clinic floor wasn't an accident — it was a warning.
