Chapter 3

Derek Holt came to the Omega quarters an hour after sunset, syringe in hand.

I was folding linens when he stepped through the doorway. No knock. No warning. Just the Gamma's boots on the stone floor and the chemical smell of wolfsbane concentrate cutting through the air before he even opened the case.

"Alpha's orders," he said. Not apologetic. Not cruel. Just stating a fact, the way you'd tell someone the weather.

I set the towel down. Looked at the syringe. The liquid inside was darker than the cleaning solution wolfsbane, almost amber, the kind of dose that would knock a weak wolf unconscious for hours. I'd seen Elena use it once, years ago, on a rogue who'd gone feral during interrogation.

"For tomorrow," Derek added, reading my face. "Banquet prep. You'll be calmer."

Calmer. That was the word Cody had chosen. Not sedated. Not incapacitated. Calmer, like this was a kindness.

I didn't fight. Fighting drew attention, and attention was the one thing I couldn't afford. I held out my arm.

Derek's hand was steady. The needle went in clean, a sharp sting, and then the compound hit my bloodstream like ice water flooding a closed system. My vision blurred at the edges. My knees went soft. I sat down on the cot before I fell, my hands gripping the frame.

"You'll feel it for about twelve hours," Derek said, capping the syringe. "Don't try to work through it. You'll just make it worse."

He left. The door shut. I sat there with my pulse hammering in my ears and the wolfsbane spreading through my chest like a weight pressing down on my lungs.

I knew this compound. I'd inventoried it myself three years ago when Elena was reorganizing the medical stores. High-grade suppressant, designed to shut down a wolf's connection to their instincts without fully knocking them out. It left you functional but diminished. Slow. Visibly impaired.

Exactly what Cody needed the Crestfall delegation to see.

I pressed both palms flat against my sternum and started breathing. In for four counts. Hold for four. Out for four. The same rhythm I'd used against Alpha-tone paralysis for five years, the grounding technique that kept my mind separate from my body when my body stopped answering to me.

The fog in my chest pushed back. My wolf, even suppressed, was awake beneath it — not strong enough to break through, but present, a current running under the sedative like a pulse you couldn't quite silence.

I kept breathing. Twelve hours. I had twelve hours to work this compound down to something I could function through.

I didn't sleep that night. I sat on the cot with my back against the wall, palms pressed to my ribs, counting breaths, and I felt the wolfsbane settle into my system like a blanket I couldn't throw off.

---

The alliance banquet started at seven.

I stood in the service corridor behind the main hall in my Omega tunic, my hands shaking slightly from the sedative still threading my veins. My vision kept blurring at the edges. My limbs felt heavy, like I was moving through water.

Marcus Webb walked past me once, glanced at my face, and nodded to himself. Satisfied. I looked exactly how Cody wanted me to look.

The Crestfall delegation arrived on time. Donovan Reed, his Luna Sera, and a retinue of ranked wolves I didn't bother memorizing. Cody greeted them at the main entrance with full honors, Alyssa at his side in my whites, Kaison on her hip.

I carried water glasses into the hall and kept my head down.

Donovan's assessment of me was brief. A glance, a flicker of something that might have been pity or distaste, and then his attention moved on. Exactly as Cody intended. The diminished Omega, the failed Luna, the demonstration of Ironmaw discipline.

I refilled glasses. Cleared plates. Moved through the hall like furniture.

And I waited.

Sera Reed sat three seats down from Cody, her posture perfect, her attention on the conversation between Donovan and Cody about territorial boundaries and trade routes. But during the lull between the second and third courses, when the servers rotated and the ranked wolves were distracted by the wine service, Sera's water glass was empty.

I moved to her side. Lifted the pitcher. Leaned in just enough that my voice would carry to her ear and nowhere else.

"The pup presented as the Ironmaw heir," I whispered, my words slow and deliberate through the sedative's fog, "carries no trace of the Luna's blood in his scent lineage."

I didn't look at her face. I poured the water. Set the pitcher down. Moved to the next table.

But I saw it. The smallest widening of her eyes. The fractional stiffening of her shoulders. And then, five seconds later, her hand moved to Donovan's sleeve — a private signal, subtle, the kind of touch that looked like affection but meant something else entirely.

The message would leave Ironmaw tonight.

I carried the pitcher back to the service corridor and set it down carefully, my hands steadier than they'd been all day.

---

Cody came to the Omega quarters alone after the delegation departed.

No Beta. No Gamma. No witnesses.

I was sitting on the cot when the door opened. I didn't stand. My body was too heavy from the wolfsbane, and standing would have looked like deference.

He shut the door behind him. Stood there in the dim light, his aura already flooding the small room, a pressure that made the air thick.

"What did you say to Sera Reed?" he asked. Quiet. Controlled.

I said nothing.

His aura intensified. Not the full Alpha tone yet, but close. A warning.

"Gracelynn," he said, softer, which was worse. "I saw you. I saw her signal Donovan. What did you tell her?"

I pressed my palms flat against the cot frame and met his eyes. Said nothing.

The Alpha tone hit like a fist.

My spine locked. My jaw clenched. My body went rigid, every muscle seizing under the bond-command, and Cody stepped closer, his voice dropping to that terrible gentleness.

"Tell me what you said."

The tone pried at my mind, a pressure behind my eyes, a demand that tried to pull the words out of me by force. My wolf snarled beneath the wolfsbane, furious and trapped, and I bit down on the inside of my cheek hard enough to taste blood.

I had said nothing under Alpha tone for five years.

I did not start now.

Cody watched me. Waited. And when I didn't break, when my silence held, something shifted in his expression — not anger, not yet, but calculation.

He released the tone. My body sagged, my breath coming in shallow gasps, but I didn't collapse.

"If you try anything like that again," he said quietly, "the consequences fall on Kaison. Do you understand?"

He knew exactly which lever to pull.

I looked at him. My hands, pressed flat on the cot behind my back, did not tremble.

He turned and left. The door shut.

I sat there in the dark, my pulse hammering, my wolf awake and clawing beneath the sedative — and I felt the crack in the stone floor beneath my feet widen, just a fraction, glowing faint gold in the shadows.
