Chapter 3

The notice came typed, official, stamped with the Ironvale seal like it deserved ceremony. *All standing herb requisitions for S. Ashveil are hereby canceled, effective immediately, per Alpha directive. Resource reallocation for pack efficiency.*

I read it twice standing in the corridor, because I wanted to be sure I wasn't inventing cruelty where there was only carelessness. There wasn't a difference this time. Efficiency. As if I were a leaking pipe he'd finally gotten around to fixing.

I filled out the replacement request myself that afternoon—formal channel, proper form, the kind of paperwork that used to be a formality when Luca still thought my name meant something. I brought it to Grant Reyes because Grant processed all Beta-level appeals, and because some small, stupid part of me still believed there were people in that pack house who remembered what my hands had done for them.

He was at his desk when I came in, a stack of border reports in front of him, his reading glasses pushed up into his hair. He took the form. He read it. I watched his jaw work once, twice, like he was chewing on something he couldn't swallow and couldn't spit out either.

He didn't meet my eyes.

The stamp came down. DENIED, in red ink, clean and final.

"Grant." I kept my voice level. I wasn't asking him to fight for me. I just wanted him to look at me while he did this.

He didn't. "Alpha's orders, Serena." His voice was rougher than usual. He slid the form back across the desk without lifting his gaze off it. "I'm sorry."

I took the denied form and walked out, and through the bond I felt it—Luca's wolf, somewhere in the house, warm and pleased with himself, radiating the particular satisfaction of a man convinced he was streamlining something. Trimming fat. Building lean. He had no idea he was hollowing out the foundation his own house stood on. He never once thought to ask why the wolfsbane batches always arrived on time, why his warriors kept coming home instead of coming home in pieces. He just assumed the world worked that way. That it always would.

I didn't cry. I went back to my storage room and I folded the denial into my archive folder, dated and labeled, and I kept organizing my shrinking shelves like the work itself could hold something together.

Grant found me there that evening.

He didn't come in. He stood in the doorway, filling most of it, his scarred forearms crossed, turning his Beta ring around his finger the way men do when they're deciding how much of themselves to hand over.

"The antidote you made for the border skirmish," he said finally. "Three months back. Silver blade through the thigh, artery nicked." He paused like the words cost him something to say out loud. "That was the third time that formula kept one of ours alive. Not the first. The third."

I didn't turn around right away. I set down the jar in my hand, slow, careful, giving myself a second to arrange my face before I let him see it.

"I know what I owe," he said.

That was all. He didn't apologize for the stamp. He didn't offer to fix it, or fight Luca, or even say her name—Maci—like the words might choke him if he tried. He just stood there a moment longer, the weight of five years of silence pressing down on both of us, and then he turned and walked away down the corridor, his footsteps slow and heavy, a man carrying something he couldn't put down.

I stared at the empty doorway for a long time.

I didn't write it down. Some debts don't belong in a file. Some debts you just carry, quietly, the way you carry a stone in your pocket—not because you need it, but because it's proof that not everyone in that house had gone blind.

The next morning, they took the room.

Luca didn't tell me himself. A junior healer named Dana came to collect the keys, apologetic and stammering, saying Alpha's orders, saying I was to share Maci's space if I needed supplies, saying it like she expected me to scream.

I didn't scream. I packed.

Maci arrived an hour later with a cardboard box, her smile stretched thin and bright as varnish. "I saved you a corner," she said, setting the box down like a gift. "You've earned a rest, older sister."

I didn't answer. I packed my mother's manuscript first, wrapped in cloth, tucked deep in my bag before anything else—jars, tools, the dried petals I'd been rationing for months. I carried the rest into the corner of her gleaming chamber myself, arranging what little I had left on a single shelf while she watched from the doorway, waiting for my hands to shake.

They didn't.

Somewhere behind my ribs, low and slow, something stirred again—longer this time, warmer, a heartbeat that wasn't quite mine yet. Then it went still, patient, waiting the way I was waiting, for a night that hadn't come yet.
