Chapter 4

The recovery report was real. That was the trick of it—I never lied about anything I could avoid lying about. Grant's thigh wound had closed clean, the border patrol was healing on schedule, and someone needed to walk that update up to the Alpha's study before midnight rounds. I volunteered before anyone else could.

The hallway outside Luca's study smelled like him. Cedar and gun oil and, underneath it now, always, jasmine. I knocked once, out of habit more than expectation, and when no answer came I let myself in with the key I'd carried for five years and no one had thought to take yet.

The room was dark except for the desk lamp, left burning, spilling yellow light across a territorial map spread flat beneath a paperweight shaped like a howling wolf—a gift I'd given him our second anniversary. I set the report down. I should have left.

Instead my eyes caught the edge of a folder half-tucked beneath the map's corner, the Lycan Council's letterhead visible in a thin white strip.

I told myself it wasn't mine to look at. I looked anyway.

The petition was three pages, typed in the flat, bloodless language of law. *Formal Registration of Ancestral Healing Formulas as Ironvale Pack Intellectual Property.* My mother's stabilization method. My grandmother's silverleaf binding compound. Formulas with our names bled into every line of the manuscript folded in my bag right now—and there, in the space marked *Co-Developer*, one name. Maci Carter.

Mine wasn't anywhere. Not a footnote. Not a signature line. Erased so completely it was as if I'd never touched a mortar and pestle in my life.

Beneath the petition, a printed thread of messages. I recognized Luca's number, then Maci's, the timestamps climbing toward the coming week.

*Luca: She has no wolf. No standing. The Council won't even question it.*

*Maci: Once the formulas are registered, her bloodline claim is dead. She'll have nothing.*

My vision went white. Not metaphorically—actually white, the room bleaching out at the edges like a photograph left too long in the sun, my ears filling with a high thin ring that drowned even my own pulse. For a moment I didn't know if I was standing or falling. I gripped the edge of the desk and the wood bit into my palm and that was the only thing that told me I was still upright, still breathing, still alive in a body that felt like it had been gutted from the inside with something colder than silver.

I counted. I don't know why counting was the thing my mind reached for, but it was. *One. Two. Three.* Thirty seconds, exactly, standing in the dark with the bond pulsing faint and warm somewhere down the hall—Luca asleep, contented, dreaming through a connection that was already, apparently, something he intended to sever in writing before he ever said the words aloud.

Then my hands started moving on their own, steady in a way the rest of me wasn't.

I photographed the petition, page by page, angling the phone to catch every stamp and signature line. I photographed the message thread, scrolling slow, capturing dates. I photographed the formula registration draft clipped behind it, my grandmother's handwriting typed into cold serif font under a heading that didn't have our name on it. I replaced the folder exactly as I'd found it, the corner tucked beneath the map at the same angle, the paperweight resting the same half-inch off center. I turned off nothing I hadn't turned on. I left no mark.

In the corridor, I made it four steps before my back hit the wall and stayed there.

I closed my eyes. My chest heaved once, twice, and then something else happened—something that had only ever flickered before, brief and gone. This time it stayed. A full minute of it: heat under my sternum, a low steady thrum like a second heartbeat finding its rhythm, present and awake and furious in a way I had no language for after twenty-three years of silence. I stood very still and let it burn through me, unwilling to move in case moving made it stop.

It settled on its own. Patient. Waiting.

I breathed until my hands stopped shaking, and then I walked back to the storage room that wasn't mine anymore and I didn't sleep.

By morning I had built the portfolio whole—five years of formulas stripped of my name, the stolen petition, the messages, the denied requisitions, the seating chart, the workshop recording where Maci mispronounced silverleaf's binding compound to a room of nodding healers. I submitted it through the Lycan Council's direct channel before the sun cleared the tree line.

Confirmation came within hours. A Tribunal date, set to fall on the same evening as the Pack Banquet.

I read it once. I set the phone face-down on my worktable, picked up the mortar, and went back to grinding dried lunar herbs into fine, even powder.

My hands did not shake at all.
