Chapter 4

I spent the next two days at Corvin's study table with my field journal open and a blank copy of Valentin's Summit presentation framework spread beside it.

Corvin had obtained it through a Nighthollow administrative channel he still had quiet access to — a remnant of his Council days, the kind of connection people forget exists until it's too late.

The strategy was mine. Every line. Every formation. I'd drafted it three weeks ago, the multi-front territorial defense formation I'd designed to showcase Nighthollow's precision under pressure before every Alpha in the country.

It was flawless.

I was going to break it.

I traced the rim of my tea mug slowly, reading through the southern flank deployment section for the fourth time. The formation was built on a cascading reinforcement structure — secondary lines that could collapse inward to shore up breaches without destabilizing the primary perimeter.

It was elegant. It was unbreakable.

Unless you overextended the secondary line by exactly twelve degrees and failed to account for the gap it would create in the tertiary fallback position.

Then it would collapse in under ten minutes.

I picked up my pen.

Selene stirred inside me, her presence sharp and awake in a way I was still getting used to. She didn't speak, but I felt her approval radiate through my chest like something finally allowed to burn.

I rewrote the southern flank.

The changes were small. Surgical. A shift in troop allocation here. A reorientation of the fallback anchor there. Nothing that would stand out to someone who didn't understand the deeper architecture of what I'd built.

But any trained war council strategist would dismantle it in minutes.

And Valentin, who had never once understood the mechanics beneath the victories I handed him, would present it with complete confidence.

I finished the corrupted version just after midnight.

Corvin appeared in the doorway with fresh tea, his expression unreadable.

"It's done," I said quietly.

He nodded once. "I'll route it through Marcus Cole's administrative inbox. A channel he trusts."

I looked down at the pages, the ink still drying.

"He'll use it," I said. It wasn't a question.

"He will," Corvin agreed. "He always has."

I closed the journal and slid the corrupted framework into an envelope. My hands were steady.

Selene's voice surfaced, low and certain. *"Good."*

I sealed the envelope and handed it to Corvin.

Then I opened my field journal and carefully tucked the original, uncorrupted version between two blank pages in the back.

Evidence.

When the time came, I would need it.

---

The next morning, Corvin briefed me on the Summit's attendees.

We sat at the kitchen table, a detailed roster spread between us. Dozens of Alphas. Their senior war councils. The Silverfang host Alpha. And presiding from the sovereign dais: Lycan Prince Theron Ashcroft and Lycan King Aldric Ashcroft.

When Corvin said the King's name, something in my chest shifted.

It wasn't recognition. It was deeper than that. Older. Like a chord struck in a place I didn't know I had.

I stopped tracing the mug rim.

Corvin glanced up at me, his expression careful.

"You felt that," he said quietly.

I nodded slowly. "I don't know what it was."

"You will," Corvin said. He didn't elaborate.

He moved on to the next name on the list. Lycan Prince Theron Ashcroft. Sovereign-ranked. Absolute authority over every Alpha present.

And then Corvin added, almost casually: "He's attended every major Summit for six years. Never once taken a chosen mate."

I looked up.

Corvin met my eyes.

"Some people are patient for reasons they do not explain," he said.

He refilled my tea and changed the subject.

I stared at the roster for a long moment, Theron's name printed in clean, formal script.

Selene stirred again, curious this time. *"Interesting."*

I said nothing.

But I marked it.

---

On the morning of my departure for Silverfang, Marcus Cole appeared at the edge of Corvin's estate boundary.

I saw him from the upstairs window — standing alone at the treeline, on foot, not wearing pack insignia. He didn't cross onto the property. He just waited.

Corvin glanced at me. "Your call."

I walked down the gravel path alone and stopped at the fence.

Marcus stood on the other side, his hands loose at his sides, his face unreadable.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, without preamble: "Lillian Shaw has already begun telling the pack that you stole pack documents when you fled. That you should be considered a rogue threat."

He said it as information. Not as a warning on Valentin's behalf.

I didn't react.

Marcus continued, quieter now. "I witnessed the rejection. I know what I witnessed."

He paused.

"I haven't yet decided what to do with that knowledge."

I looked at him for a long moment.

He had stood in that corridor and watched Valentin step over me. He had said nothing. Done nothing.

But he was here now.

I spoke carefully. "When the time comes, Marcus, tell the truth. That's all."

His jaw tightened.

I turned and walked back to the house.

I didn't look back.

Behind me, I heard his footsteps retreat into the forest.

Selene's voice surfaced, low and approving. *"He will remember that."*

I climbed the steps to Corvin's front door.

The Silverfang Summit was three days away.

And I was ready.
