Chapter 5

The Silverfang territory compound appeared through the car window like something built to intimidate.

Stone walls. Guard towers. A pack house that looked more like a fortress than a residence. The driveway alone was longer than Nighthollow's entire ceremonial grounds.

I sat in the back of Corvin's hired car, my field journal pressed against my ribs, the hooded arbiter cloak folded beside me. The driver had stopped speaking after the first ten miles. Corvin had briefed him: deliver the passenger, ask no questions, leave immediately.

We passed through the main gate. Security wolves flanked both sides, their eyes tracking the vehicle with the kind of attention that suggested they could smell rank and allegiance through steel and glass.

The combined auras hit me before I stepped out of the car.

Dozens of Alphas. All of them gathered in one place. The atmospheric pressure of it pressed against my skin like humidity before a storm — thick, oppressive, the kind of weight that made breathing feel like work.

Selene stirred.

Not restless. Alert.

For the first time since the rejection, I felt her presence as something that had heat and weight rather than silence. Something that pushed back against the pressure instead of collapsing under it.

*"They are strong,"* she said quietly. *"We are stronger."*

I didn't answer her.

But I felt it.

The driver opened my door. I stepped out, pulling the cloak around my shoulders, lifting the hood. The arbiter registration Corvin had arranged identified me only by a Council-assigned number. No name. No pack affiliation.

A Silverfang attendant approached — a young Delta with a clipboard and the carefully neutral expression of someone tasked with managing people who outranked him.

"Arbiter Seven," he said, glancing at my papers. "This way."

He led me through a side entrance, away from the main hall where Alphas were already gathering. The arbiter quarters were in a separate wing — small, functional rooms designed for Council officials who needed proximity without presence.

My room was at the end of the corridor. A narrow bed. A desk. A single window overlooking the forest.

I set my journal on the desk and sat on the edge of the bed.

The sun was setting. Through the window, I could see wolves moving through the compound — warriors on patrol, attendants carrying supplies, the constant motion of a pack preparing to host the largest gathering of its kind in years.

I traced the journal's cover slowly.

Six years of work. Every strategy. Every formation. All of it documented in shorthand only I could read.

Tomorrow, Valentin would present the corrupted version before every Alpha in the country.

And I would watch.

I didn't sleep.

I sat at the desk and reviewed the original strategy one more time, committing every detail to memory. When the sky started to lighten, I closed the journal and dressed in the arbiter robes — simple, dark, designed to render the wearer anonymous.

I pulled the hood up and checked my reflection in the small mirror above the desk.

My face disappeared into shadow.

Good.

The Summit hall was already filling when I arrived.

Long tables arranged in a horseshoe formation. The presentation floor in the center. The sovereign dais elevated at the far end, two chairs positioned to overlook the entire assembly.

I took my seat among the other arbiters at the judging panel table — positioned at a lateral angle to the presentation floor, close enough to observe every detail, far enough to remain peripheral.

The other arbiters nodded brief acknowledgment. No one spoke.

Then the hall doors opened, and Lycan Prince Theron Ashcroft entered beside his father.

The room didn't go silent.

It went still.

Every Alpha present turned toward the dais. Not in unison. Not obviously. But the shift in attention was absolute.

Theron moved with the kind of unhurried certainty that suggested he had never needed to assert himself loudly. He was tall — taller than most Alphas present — and carried himself with a controlled grace that made every gesture deliberate.

He wore formal Council attire. Dark. Unadorned. His expression was calm, unreadable.

King Aldric took the higher seat. Theron sat beside him.

An attendant placed tea at Theron's right hand.

And then Theron went completely still.

His hand, halfway to the mug, stopped.

His head turned — not quickly, not obviously — toward the arbiter panel.

Toward me.

I felt his gaze land like weight.

He didn't move after that. Didn't reach for the tea. Didn't shift in his seat.

He just… watched.

Not conspicuously. Not in a way that would draw attention from the Alphas now filling the hall.

But I felt it.

Selene felt it.

*"He knows,"* she said quietly.

I kept my head down, my hands folded on the table, my breathing steady.

Theron's tea sat untouched.

His dark-gold eyes tracked me from the dais with the absolute, patient attention of a man who had been waiting to catch a particular scent for six years.

And had just caught it.

The hall doors opened again.

Valentin Shaw entered, flanked by Marcus Cole and Gamma Dirk.

He moved through the room with practiced ease, his Alpha aura projecting confidence, his hand extended to greet senior Alphas who rose to meet him. He smiled. Laughed. Deployed his Alpha tone in social registers that made the wolves around him defer without realizing they were doing it.

He glanced toward the sovereign dais and offered a brief, calibrated nod toward Theron.

Theron did not return it.

Valentin didn't notice.

He took his seat at the Nighthollow delegation table, Marcus and Dirk settling beside him, and leaned back in his chair with the easy confidence of a man who had never been publicly challenged.

Lillian Shaw entered a moment later, surveying the hall with the particular satisfaction of a woman who believed every outcome had already been arranged in her favor.

She spotted the arbiter panel.

Dismissed it in a single glance.

I watched her sit beside Valentin, her hand resting briefly on his shoulder, proprietary and assured.

Selene's voice surfaced, low and sharp. *"They have no idea."*

I said nothing.

But I felt the heat building in my chest — not rage, not yet, but something close.

Something that had been silent for six years and was finally, finally awake.

On the dais, Theron leaned toward his father and spoke a single quiet sentence.

King Aldric's gaze moved toward the arbiter panel.

Toward me.

He went still.

Completely, utterly still.

His hand tightened on the armrest of his chair.

Then he turned back to Theron and spoke a single word I couldn't hear from across the hall.

Theron nodded once.

Neither of them looked away.
