Chapter 4

I would not see it happen. I would only hear about it later, in pieces — from a rogue trader who'd once run supply for Ironveil, from Lyra's contacts, from the particular way people talk about a pack when its Alpha starts to rot from the inside. But I know exactly how it went, because I know exactly what that room looked like, and I know exactly what Cayden's hands do when he's caught doing something he can't explain.

He would have been standing in my herbarium — the small stone room off the kitchen where I dried roots and measured tinctures for six years — holding the antidote records in both hands like they were something that might bite him. Aurelia would have found him there. She would have taken the pages from his hands without asking. She would have walked to the hearth and fed them to the fire one at a time, watching his face instead of the flames.

"She's gone," she would have said. "She was nothing. Act like an Alpha."

And Cayden — Alpha Cayden Voss, who once told an entire pack hall that I was dead-blooded — would have watched six years of careful handwriting curl black and said nothing at all. His wolf, underneath, would have looked at the woman he chose over me with something that had never been there before. Not affection curdling. Just distance, cold and flat, noticing her for the first time as a stranger standing in a room that used to be mine.

I wasn't there. I didn't need to be. I already knew how that story ended.

Out here, the days stop being days and start being intervals between threats. Lyra and I move through the unclaimed zones like we're reading a book no one else has bothered to open — which pack routes bleed into rogue territory, which border markers are fresh and which are months old and abandoned, which supply trails carry too much traffic for casual scavengers. I build the map the way I built everything at Ironveil: quietly, exactly, without asking anyone's permission to be thorough.

Lyra watches my back while I work. She reads terrain the way I read chemistry — instinctively, without needing to explain the logic to herself first. Between us, in three weeks, we know more about this territory than any patrol that's ever walked it with a pack behind them. Nobody walks unclaimed land slowly enough to actually see it. We have nothing but time and nowhere else to be.

*

On the ninth night, the fire is low and the wind has died, and Lyra decides to reenact Aurelia's face.

She stands up from the log she's been sitting on, straightens an invisible dress, and lifts her chin with a expression so precisely, viciously accurate — the exact hollow triumph Aurelia wore at the Luna stone — that I feel something crack loose in my chest before I understand what it is.

"Someone get the omegas to clean the cellar," Lyra says, in a voice pitched two octaves too bright, one hand pressed to her collarbone like she's guarding a necklace that doesn't exist. Then her face shifts — she plays the moment Aurelia would have found the vial already gone, the note already read, the whole triumph arriving three hours too late to matter.

I laugh.

It comes out of me sideways, unplanned, and my hand flies up to cover my mouth on instinct — six years of training myself quiet — before I catch what I'm doing and lower it again. I let the sound stay uncovered. It feels strange in my throat, unfamiliar, like a muscle I forgot I had.

Lyra doesn't comment. She just adds another branch to the fire, like she didn't notice, though I know she did. That not-noticing is its own kind of gift.

*

Two days later, my body decides for me.

I'm mid-stride on the perimeter check, cataloguing a scent marker that's three days stale, when the clearing tilts. Grey creeps in from the edges of my vision, narrowing everything to a tunnel, and the ground comes up faster than I can brace for it.

I don't feel myself hit it.

I surface in pieces — the smell of pine needles crushed against my cheek, the sound of Lyra's voice low and urgent above me, the sensation of being lifted like I weigh nothing at all, though I know I don't. She doesn't ask if I can walk. She doesn't discuss it. She just carries me, her stride fast and even, following a route she must have mapped in her head days ago without telling me.

The healer's door, when we reach it, is set into a hillside like it doesn't want to be found. There's no welcome mat. There's a warning carved crudely into the frame that I can't read from this angle.

Lyra knocks anyway.
