Chapter 5

The warning carved into the door frame says *trespassers will be left where they fall*. I can read it fine from this angle. I just can't do anything about it.

Lyra knocks anyway.

The door opens six inches. A woman fills the gap — mid-forties, dark hair pulled back without ceremony, eyes that move over the two of us the way a blade moves over a whetstone. Quick. Assessing. Decided before the assessment finishes.

"I don't treat strays."

The door begins to close.

Then it stops.

I watch the woman's nostrils flare. Just once. A small, involuntary thing, the kind of reaction the body produces before the mind can veto it. Her gaze comes back to me — not to my face, not to the bruising along my jaw or the way I'm being held upright by Lyra's arm — but to the hollow at the base of my throat. The mark-scar. Cold and dead and unmistakable to anyone who knows what that particular absence smells like.

She knows.

Something moves behind her eyes. Not softness. Nothing so simple as that. More like — recognition. The specific, unwilling kind.

She steps back from the door.

"Bring her inside," she says, in the exact same flat tone she used to refuse us. "Don't touch anything."

*

Her name is Cecilia. She tells me this the way she tells me everything — as information, not introduction. She bandages my ribs with the focused attention of someone who finds sloppiness personally offensive. The wrapping is tighter and more precise than it needs to be. I note this without commenting on it.

I don't perform gratitude. I don't perform suffering. I lie on the cot in her back room and watch her work, and on the second day, when she reaches past me for a root compound, I say: "You're using dried versus fresh. The alkaloid concentration drops by about thirty percent in the drying process. Does that account for your dosage adjustment?"

Cecilia's hands pause. Just for a moment.

"It does," she says.

"The ratio you're using assumes fresh," I say. "You're under-dosing."

She puts the compound down. Picks it up again. Looks at the ratio. Sets it back down a second time.

She doesn't thank me. She recalculates in silence, adjusts the measure, and continues working. But the next morning, she explains — unprompted, her back half-turned, voice clipped — why she prefers the dried preparation despite the concentration loss. The shelf stability, she says. The consistency across seasons. The fact that fresh supply cannot always be guaranteed.

"Fair trade-off," I say.

"Obviously," she says.

By the fifth day, she's asking me questions.

*

I don't know when she starts logging me. I only notice it in retrospect — the way her eyes track my hands after she changes a dressing, the small notebook that appears on the table beside her instruments. She's cataloguing my healing rate. I understand this the way I understand most things about Cecilia: she does not announce what she's doing, and she does not require my permission to do it, and the fact that she's doing it at all means she's seen something that doesn't add up.

I let her look.

I've been letting people look at me my entire life. The difference is that Cecilia is actually seeing something.

On the eighth day, she doesn't come to the back room in the morning. I hear her in the main space — the sound of pages turning, of a heavy book being pulled from a shelf, of silence that has the quality of concentration rather than absence. Lyra appears in the doorway with two cups and a look on her face that I can't immediately categorize.

"She's been in there since before dawn," Lyra says quietly.

I sit up. My ribs barely protest. Three days ago, that movement would have cost me.

I look at my hands. The last of the cellar cuts are gone — not scarred over, just *gone*, like they happened to someone else's skin. I have been adding this to my list of unexplained data points for over a week. The list is getting long.

I get up and walk to the doorway.

Cecilia is at the table, surrounded by open texts, the notebook in front of her filled to the margins. Her pen is still in her hand but she's not writing. She's staring at the page like it said something she wasn't prepared to hear.

I wait.

She looks up. Her face is doing something I haven't seen it do before — not soft, not warm, but stripped of the professional distance she wears like armor. What's underneath is not what I expected. It looks, precisely, like fear.

"Sit down," she says.

I sit.

She turns the notebook around and pushes it across the table toward me. The page is dense with figures, cross-references, scent chemistry notations, and at the bottom, underlined twice in a hand that is not as steady as usual, a single line from a Lycan medical text.

*Suppressed royal bloodline. Dormant through external trauma or magical interference. Surfacing under accumulated physical stress.*

Lyra reads over my shoulder. I hear her breath catch.

Cecilia's voice is flat and clinical and completely at odds with the way her hands are gripping the edge of the table.

"I need you to understand," she says, "that I have never seen these markers in a living patient. I have only ever read about them." A pause. "You are not wolfless. You were never wolfless." Another pause, shorter. "We need to get this to the Lycan royal court."

Lyra sets down both cups. She picks up the document. She reads it once. She reads it again.

"How long?" she asks Cecilia. "How long until her wolf surfaces?"

Cecilia looks at me, not at Lyra, when she answers.

"It already wants to," she says. "Something just has to crack her open first."
