Chapter 3

The wilderness doesn't care that I was Luna-rejected three days ago. It doesn't care that I have no wolf. It just keeps trying to kill me.

I crouch in the underbrush at the edge of a clearing, hands pressed flat against bark that still holds yesterday's rain. My ribs ache where Dane's fist landed. The mark-scar on my neck is cold and hollow, a patch of skin that has forgotten what it was supposed to do. I've been tracking this particular rogue patrol for two days now — four wolves, rotating shifts, territorial but not organized. They passed this way an hour ago. I can still smell the burn of their scent markers on the trees.

I wait until the clearing is empty, then move.

My legs are slower than any wolf's. That's not new information. What's new is that I'm learning to use it — to move in the gaps between their patrols, to mask my scent with the right plants, to read the land the way I used to read Cayden's supply records. Thoroughly. Without missing anything.

I find wild garlic near a stream bed and crush it between my palms, rubbing it into my clothes and hair. It won't fool a wolf up close, but it muddies the trail enough to buy time. I dig up bitter root with my bare hands — the kind that slows bleeding if you chew it, the kind Ironveil's healer never bothered learning because she had me to do the research for her.

I don't think about Ironveil.

I think about the fact that my hands are healing faster than they should. The cuts from the cellar stone should still be raw. They're not. They're closed, pale pink, like they've had a week instead of three days. I don't understand it. I add it to the list of things I'm cataloguing and not explaining.

On the third night, I let myself stop.

Not because I'm tired. Because if I don't stop, if I keep moving without pause, my body will make the decision for me and I'll collapse somewhere I can't defend. So I find a hollow between two fallen trees, the kind of shelter that doesn't look like shelter unless you know how to see it, and I sit with my back against bark and my hands flat on the cold ground.

I give myself one full minute.

The bond-scar doesn't warm. My wolf doesn't stir. The forest is dark and utterly indifferent, and I am alone in it in a way I have never been alone before — not pack-alone, not invisible-in-a-crowd alone, but actually, structurally, biologically alone.

I breathe in. I breathe out. I count to sixty.

Then I get up and keep moving.

Lyra finds me on the fourth day.

I'm crouched beside a thin creek, washing blood off my hands — not mine this time, a rabbit I trapped and field-dressed with a rock and a sharp stick because I left Ironveil with nothing but the clothes on my back and the intelligence in my head. I hear her before I see her. The footsteps are too deliberate to be animal, too careful to be rogue.

I go still. I don't reach for a weapon I don't have. I just wait, hands dripping, every exit mapped.

She steps out of the tree line and looks at me.

Her Omega brand is still visible on her wrist, raw-edged and recent. She has a pack bag over one shoulder and an expression I recognize immediately — the look of someone who made a decision and doesn't regret it yet.

"You're damn hard to track," she says. Not as a compliment. As an observation. "You walk like you're trying not to leave footprints."

I look at her for a long moment. Cataloguing. Assessing. Old habit.

"You followed me," I say.

"I followed your scent trail." She drops the bag and sits down across from my small fire without asking permission. She pulls out a second rabbit — already dressed, already prepared — and sets it between us. "You move like you're trying not to take up space. Stop it. It slows you down."

Something in my chest shifts. Not warmth. Not trust. Just — recognition. The shape of a door that hasn't been locked yet.

I reach for the rabbit.

We don't discuss the ceremony. We don't discuss Cayden or the cellar or the fact that we're both packless and Omega-branded and alone in territory that wants us dead. We discuss patrol routes. Rogue territory boundaries. The alliance markers I mapped in the eastern sector.

Lyra's combat skills and my herbal knowledge organize themselves into something functional without either of us announcing it. By nightfall, we have a rotation. By the next morning, we have a route.

The first time I almost smile is when Lyra describes — voice flat, eyes sharp — the look on Roland's face when she demanded he account for what happened in the cellar.

"He went grey," she says. "Like he'd seen a ghost."

"Good," I say.

She glances at me. "You're angrier than you look."

I don't answer that. I just hand her the water flask and stand up.

"We should move before the next patrol cycle," I say.

She follows without question.

*

We're three days into functional partnership when I catch the scent.

It's faint at first — just a thread on the wind, floral and sharp and wrong for this territory. I stop walking. Lyra stops beside me, hand already moving toward the knife at her belt.

"What is it?" she asks, low.

I tilt my head, testing the air. It's not rogue. It's not pack. It's something else entirely, something I don't have a name for yet.

"I don't know," I say.

Lyra's wolf is already pushing at the surface, her eyes flashing amber. Mine stays silent. Dead. Cold.

We move anyway.

Whatever that scent is, it's coming closer. And I've learned enough in the past week to know that in rogue territory, closer usually means danger.

We run.
