Chapter 2

He said my name like it cost him something.

"Cora."

Just that. Barely louder than the rain. But it landed on me like a hand closing around my throat, and every wolf in that clearing dropped at the same time I did — not from fear of him, though there was plenty of that too, but from something underneath fear, something older. I felt it in my own knees before I understood it. Marrow recognizing marrow.

Tyler went down hardest. One second he was standing over me with my pregnancy test pinched between two fingers like evidence in a trial he thought he was winning, and the next his legs folded like they'd been kicked out from under him. He hit the mud on both knees, hands flat, head bowed, and I watched the confusion crack across his face before the submission did — like his body understood before his ego caught up.

Something tore loose in my chest.

Not the mate bond. That had already been carved out of me an hour ago, cold and hollow and gone. This was different. This was five years of Omega training, twenty-two years of not-knowing, every mile I'd ever walked with my head down — all of it detonating at once behind my ribs.

My spine bowed. I heard it before I felt it, a wet crack that should have dropped me into agony, and instead dropped me into something else entirely — space, room, a body I'd never been given permission to use. Bone rearranged itself. My skin split down the seams Tyler had spent five years telling me were too plain, too Omega, too nothing, and underneath it came fur — not the dull brindle I'd always assumed I'd have if I ever shifted, but silver, bright as struck metal, pouring out of me in a wave.

I came up on four legs twice Tyler's size.

The scent hit the clearing before I even understood it was coming from me — white jasmine, sharp and sweet, laced through with something like iron, like blood, like a promise. Every wolf in that field turned their throat toward me at once. Tyler's hand, still pressed into the mud, started shaking.

I howled. I don't know where it came from — some cavity inside me I'd never been allowed to fill. The trees answered it, shivering rain loose from every branch, and when the sound finally left me, I felt lighter than I had in five years, lighter than I had ever been in my life.

The shift back hurt worse. I came down onto my knees gasping, human again, skin raw, and a coat dropped over my shoulders before the cold could reach me — heavy, warm, smelling of cedar smoke and something regal I didn't have a name for yet. Alaric crouched in front of me, closer than a King should let himself get to anyone, his eyes wet in a way that didn't match the authority still rolling off him in waves.

"She's carrying my heir!" Tyler's voice cracked through the clearing, desperate now, ugly. He was on his feet again, swaying. "Section Twelve — she doesn't leave without my consent — "

Alaric didn't even turn his head.

A woman stepped out of the second SUV instead — silver-streaked hair, a scar along her jaw, moving like she'd broken bones for a living and enjoyed it. She planted herself between me and Tyler like a door closing.

"Lycan Court authority supersedes pack custody statutes," she said, flat, bored, like she was reading him his own death sentence in the driest voice she owned. "Touch her again, Alpha Voss, and I will treat it as an act of war against the crown. That's not a threat. That's the law you're currently violating."

Tyler looked past her, to Marcus, to the wall of Ironvale wolves who'd fanned out behind him ten minutes ago like a wall. Nobody moved to back him. Marcus wouldn't even meet his eyes.

I let Alaric help me to my feet. I didn't look at Tyler again. I didn't look at Ivory in her ruined white dress, standing there with Tyler's mark still fresh and bleeding on her throat like a prize she was only now realizing might not be one.

The convoy doors shut around me with a sound like a held breath finally let out. Through the window, the Ironvale gate shrank and disappeared behind a curtain of rain, and I didn't turn to watch it go.

My hand stayed flat against my stomach the whole ride. My other hand found the seam of the leather seat beside me, and I counted the stitches, one, two, three, the way I used to count floor tiles when Tyler raised his voice, the way I used to count anything at all to stay inside my own skin.

I was still counting when the car crossed into territory I didn't recognize, chasing a scent that had just told the whole world exactly what I was.
