Chapter 3

The entrance hall floor was black marble veined with gold, and I counted the tiles the way I used to count seams in fabric — one, two, three — because it was easier than counting the eyes on me. Healers converged before I'd taken ten steps, their hands professional and quick, and I let them sweep me down a corridor that smelled like antiseptic and something floral I didn't have a name for yet. I kept counting. Forty-one, forty-two. It was the only thing keeping me inside my own skin.

They laid me on a table with clean white sheets — cleaner than anything I'd slept on in five years — and a healer with steady hands pressed something cold to my stomach. A second heartbeat filled the room, fast and small and mine.

"Confirmed pregnancy, six weeks," the head healer said, not to me, but to the tablet in her other hand, and then, quieter, like she was building a case: "Malnutrition, moderate. Old fractures in the left wrist, healed without proper setting. Cartilage damage in both knees consistent with prolonged kneeling labor. Rejection wound at the throat, severity level three, tissue necrosis at the edges."

She read it like a shopping list. I lay there and let her.

Alaric stood at the foot of the table, and I watched something happen to his face while she spoke — not shock, not yet. He'd already braced for shock. This was worse. His jaw worked once, twice, and the muscle beneath his eye twitched, and I understood, watching him, that every word she said was landing on him like a blow he wasn't allowed to flinch from in front of his own healers.

I realized something else, colder and clearer: this wasn't sympathy. This was evidence. Someone, somewhere, was going to have to answer for the left wrist, for the knees, for five years catalogued in clinical language on a tablet. My suffering had just become a case file.

I didn't cry. I watched him not cry either.

*

His private chambers were quieter, warmer, a fire going though the night wasn't cold enough to need it. He waited until the door shut behind us before he reached into his coat and drew out a ring — heavy gold, a wolf's head worked into the band, worn smooth at the edges from decades on his hand.

He held it out to me on his open palm like it weighed nothing.

I looked at it for a long time. Long enough that he started to speak, then stopped himself.

"What happened to my mother," I said instead. Not a question, not really. I already knew the shape of the answer; I just needed him to say it out loud so I could stop bracing for something worse.

His hand didn't move. "She's alive." A pause, the kind that costs a man something to get through. "She's been kept under. Wolfsbane, administered continuously for over twenty years, by members of her own healing staff."

The fire popped. I didn't blink.

"You're telling me," I said, slow, precise, watching each word land, "that the people assigned to heal her were the ones keeping her under. And nobody checked."

"Cora — "

"For twenty-two years."

He had no answer that wasn't a confession. I watched him search for one anyway, watched him fail, and something in my chest went very still and very cold — not grief, not yet. Grief needed room I didn't have. This was rage with its shoes on, patient, waiting.

I looked at the ring one more time. Then I set it down on the table between us, gently, like I was setting down something that belonged to someone else's story, and I walked out.

*

The great hall smelled like polished stone and old power, three hundred years of it pressed into the walls, and I was halfway across the floor toward the dais when the scent hit me — cedar, warm, and underneath it, thunderstorm, ozone before rain.

My wolf came up under my skin so fast I stumbled.

*Mate.*

One word, undeniable, the way the sun is undeniable. I found him at the edge of the hall near the doors, tall, dark-haired, standing so still he looked carved there, and I watched the same word hit him — watched his jaw tighten, his hands close at his sides, watched him hold his own ground like it required physical effort not to close the distance between us.

Jasmine and iron. Cedar and thunderstorm. The two scents tangled in the air between us like something already decided.

I looked away first.

I made it deliberate, unhurried, a decision rather than a flinch, and I kept walking toward the dais without turning back. Behind me, he didn't move. He didn't call my name. He let me go, and something in that — the not-following — told me more about him than a hundred crossed rooms would have.
