Chapter 1

The moonstone hit the light at 8:47 p.m., and I recognized my own grief hanging around another woman's throat.

I was standing in the shadowed alcove behind the pillar farthest from the stage, where no one bothered to look. Landon was three sentences into his speech. "The soul behind every victory hymn," he was saying, and his hand went to Ariana's waist like it had been resting there for years. She rose. She smiled. The pendant swung once against her collarbone—the smooth pale stone I had pressed into Landon's palm the night my father stopped breathing. I had told him, then, that I wanted him to carry the last thing my father saw me holding.

Ariana wore it like she'd bought it at an airport.

Inside me, my wolf—dulled for months by a heaviness I couldn't name—made a small sound. Not a howl. A whimper. Then quiet.

I left the banquet the way I had entered it. No one turned. No one noticed.

***

The drive to the training grounds the next morning was forty minutes of trying to convince myself I had misread the pendant. Mate to mate, I told myself. Just a conversation. Just his voice, alone, without an audience.

His private quarters were at the back of the training barn. The door was cracked. I heard Ariana first.

"—your sad, broken little wolf. She actually thinks the mate bond means something."

A pause. Then Landon laughed.

I had heard him laugh a thousand times—the practiced one for allied Alphas, the tight one for his father's old warriors, the low one he used with me in the dark. This laugh was none of those. This laugh was unguarded. Real. The laugh of a man who believed no one was watching.

"She's too pathetic to ever be a real Luna."

There was the soft sound of him pulling Ariana closer.

I did not move. I did not breathe. I stood in the crack of that door and let the laugh do what a vow could not—rearrange every memory I had of him into the correct order, chronological and cruel.

Then I walked back to my car and I drove home and I waited for night.

The pack run took him out at ten. I let myself into his study at ten-oh-four.

His laptop opened on the second try. The password was Ariana's birthdate. Of course it was.

The encrypted folder was labeled with a single letter: A. I opened it with hands that felt like they belonged to someone braver than me.

Hymn registration forms. Twenty-three of them. Every song I had ever composed, filed with the Lycan Council's cultural archives under Ariana Young, spiritual composer, Ironveil Pack. Draft paperwork installing her as Luna, dated for the Summit's closing night. And beneath it—

A supply ledger. Wolfsbane tincture, low concentration, prepared bi-weekly. Two columns. One labeled A—scent maintenance. The other labeled L—suppression, food-grade, daily.

Daily. For months.

My wolf stirred faintly, like something pinned under water. I understood, finally, why she had felt so far away.

I slid a drive into the port and copied everything. The transfer bar filled slowly. Somewhere on the second floor a clock ticked. When the drive clicked full I pocketed it, closed the laptop, and heard the front door open downstairs.

Ariana's laugh. Landon's voice, thick with wine.

I did not run. I don't know why. Maybe I was tired of running quietly.

***

He stopped in the doorway. His face didn't change. There was no guilt in it. Only irritation, the kind he wore when a delta interrupted him mid-sentence.

"Get out of my study."

I raised the drive between us. "Explain the ledger."

Ariana appeared behind him, one hand on the frame, watching me the way you watch a movie you've already spoiled for yourself.

Landon's shoulders squared. His voice dropped into that register that lives underneath language.

"Kneel."

The Alpha tone hit me in the sternum. My wolf tried to rise and buckled, dulled, drowning. My knees hit the hardwood before I decided anything.

"Jealous, broken rogue," he said, quiet now, walking closer. "You should be grateful I haven't had you killed."

Ariana smiled faintly.

I knelt. I kept my head down. My fist stayed closed around the drive so tight I felt the plastic bite my palm. He did not see it. He saw a girl on the floor and he mistook her for the end of a story.

I did not speak. Some decisions do not require words.

***

The next night I stood in the Summit hall with the drive in my coat pocket and my mark cold under my collar.

Landon took the stage with Ariana on his arm. Every Alpha in the region watched. He announced his intention to formally install Ariana Young as Luna of the Ironveil Pack. There was applause. There was applause.

Then he turned. He found me in the crowd. His eyes were flat.

"I, Landon Ward, Alpha of the Ironveil Pack, reject you, Leila Carpenter, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went white-hot. I felt it burn straight through the muscle. Then it went cold—the specific cold of a door closing on an empty room. My wolf howled once inside my skull, a sound so lonely it did not seem to belong to me, and then she folded, and then she was gone.

I stayed standing. I do not know how.

No one moved to stop me. No one moved at all.

I walked out of the hall on legs that were not mine, past the alliance banners, past the guards who did not raise their eyes, past the boundary stones of Ironveil territory. My hand was in my pocket. The drive was still there.

Behind me, from the great hall, I heard Ariana begin to laugh.

I kept walking.
