The bond breaks at her third binding ceremony, and her mate Bentley trades her to rogues—yet her wolf, Ember, stirs with dangerous hope. Cast out by a pack steeped in lies, she fights to survive their treachery while hunting the secrets buried beneath Ironvale. Every howl draws her closer to a truth that fuels a consuming vengeance, culminating in a night that will alter her fate forever.

After My Mate Sold Me to Rogues Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, three minutes after the elders began the third invocation.

I stood at the altar in ceremonial white, hands extended palm-up in the traditional posture, and felt the mark on my neck pulse warm—Ember stirring inside me with something I hadn't let myself name in months. Hope. The ceremonial hall was packed to capacity. Every wolf in Ironvale had come to watch this time. Third ceremony. Third chance. The elders' voices rose in the binding chant, and I kept my eyes on Bentley's face, waiting for him to meet my gaze.

He was looking at the door.

The distress howl tore through the pack mind-link like claws through silk. Paris's voice, high and ragged: *Rogues at the southern border—closing on my position—please—*

Bentley's eyes shifted. Gold bled into the edges. His wolf surfacing.

I said his name. Once. Quiet.

He turned from the altar without a word and ran.

The hall went silent. Not the reverent silence of a ceremony—the thick, airless silence of a crowd holding its breath. I stood there with my hands still extended, the warm anticipation in my neck-mark slowly cooling, and watched three hundred wolves watch me back. No one moved. No one spoke. The elders stopped chanting mid-phrase.

I lowered my hands.

Ember whimpered once, deep in my chest, and went quiet.

I counted the minutes. Fifteen. Thirty. An hour. The crowd began to shift. Whispers threaded through the mind-link—not to me, around me, like I was a stone in a river they had to navigate past. Someone brought me water. I didn't drink it. I stood at the altar and waited, because that was what I had done for three years. I waited.

Bentley returned at the two-hour mark.

Paris was at his side. Laughing. Unmarked. Unharmed. Her ceremonial dress—pale pink, not white—was pristine. No dirt. No blood. No sign of rogues or struggle or the emergency that had dragged my mate from our third Mate Ceremony in front of the entire pack.

I looked at Bentley. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

The elders stepped forward, uncertain. One of them—Marcus, who had known me since I was eighteen—opened his mouth to speak. Bentley raised a hand. Alpha gesture. The elder stopped.

Bentley walked to the altar. Not to me—to the center, where the ceremonial blade and the binding cord lay on the stone. He picked up the blade. Set it down. His jaw worked like he was chewing words he couldn't swallow.

Paris stood at the edge of the dais, her hand pressed to her mouth, eyes wide and wet. Performing concern. I had watched her perform concern sixty times in three years. I knew the angle of her head, the exact tremor she put in her fingers.

Bentley turned to face me.

The mark on my neck was still warm. Barely. Like a fire someone had stopped feeding.

"I'm sorry," he said.

Not through the bond. Out loud. For the crowd.

I waited.

"I can't—" He stopped. Started again. "This isn't working, Skylar."

The warmth in my neck-mark flickered.

"You're a good wolf," he said. "You've done a lot for the pack. But I don't think—" Another pause. He glanced at Paris. She nodded, small and encouraging, like she was helping him through something hard. "I don't think the Moon Goddess meant for us to—"

"Say it properly," I said.

My voice came out calm. Steady. I didn't recognize it.

Bentley flinched.

"If you're going to do this," I said, "say it properly. Use the words."

The hall went silent again. This time it was the kind of silence that came before something broke.

Bentley's hands curled into fists at his sides. His wolf was in his eyes—gold and flickering, trying to pull him back. He ignored it. He had been ignoring it for three years.

He squared his shoulders. Lifted his chin. Alpha posture.

"I, Bentley, Alpha of Ironvale," he said, voice carrying to every corner of the hall, "reject you, Skylar Pierce, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went ice-cold.

Not gradually. Not a fade. One second it was warm, the next it was frozen, and the cold spread down through my chest like someone had poured winter into my veins. Inside me, Ember made a sound I had never heard her make—not a howl, not a whimper, but something between a gasp and a collapse, like the air had been torn out of her lungs.

Then: silence.

Total. Absolute. The space where Ember's presence had always been—warm and steady and mine—was empty. Not quiet. Empty. Like a room where someone had died and the body was still on the floor.

I couldn't feel the bond anymore.

I couldn't feel him.

Somewhere in the crowd, a wolf made a low, distressed sound. Several others shifted, uneasy. Rejection vows were rare. Most wolves didn't survive them. The severed mate who lived usually ended up Omega or rogue, broken in ways that never healed.

I looked at Bentley.

He was staring at me like he expected me to scream. To drop. To shatter in front of him the way the bond had shattered inside me.

I didn't.

I turned from the altar, stepped down from the dais, and walked through the center of the hall. The crowd parted. No one touched me. No one spoke. I walked past the elders, past the ceremonial candles, past Paris—who watched me go with her hand still pressed to her mouth and something that looked almost like disappointment in her eyes.

I walked out of the ceremonial hall, got into my car, and drove.

The Ironvale border stone was a fifteen-minute drive. I parked beside it, engine still running, and sat in the silence where Ember used to be. My hands were steady on the wheel. The mark on my neck was still cold. I reached up and touched it once—just to confirm it was real, that it had happened, that I wasn't hallucinating the empty space in my chest.

It was real.

I pulled the small vial from my boot—wolfsbane antidote, the one I had brewed five years ago with my own blood as the binding agent, the one Paris had stolen credit for. The herb residue inside still carried my bloodline signature. I had kept it all this time, tucked against my ankle, because some part of me had always known I might need proof.

I set it on the dashboard.

Then I pulled out my phone and called Lycan Prince Caleb.

He answered on the second ring.

"Skylar," he said. His voice was exactly as I remembered—steady, unhurried, like he had been waiting.

"I'm leaving Ironvale," I said. "I have detailed intelligence on rogue movements across the entire northeast. Border patterns, supply routes, pack vulnerabilities. Three years of data. I want a seat at your war council."

A pause. Not hesitation—consideration.

"How current is the data?" he asked.

"Updated two days ago."

"Can you be at my border by morning?"

"Yes."

"The court's gates are open," Caleb said.

He didn't ask if I was all right. He didn't offer condolences or comfort or empty words about the Moon Goddess's plan. He asked me a professional question and gave me a professional answer, and the respect in that—the assumption that I was still whole enough to negotiate, still strong enough to offer value—cracked something in my chest that the rejection hadn't touched.

I ended the call.

I put the car in drive, crossed the Ironvale border, and felt the pack mind-link go silent behind me.

Inside the empty space where Ember used to be, something stirred. Not her voice. Not her presence. Just the faintest shift—like air moving in a room I thought was sealed.

I drove toward the Lycan Court and didn't look back.
