Chapter 3

The cabin was quiet when I woke, gray light pushing through the pine boards, Barnaby's slow breathing at the foot of the bed. I lay still for a moment, tracking the ache in my chest — familiar now, the cold weight of the scar under my collarbone, the empty place where the bond had been.

And then, underneath the ache, something else.

A vibration. Low. Slow. Not warmth — nothing like warmth. A hum that started deep behind my ribs and moved upward, tightening my jaw before I understood what I was feeling.

*She thinks we're still theirs.*

The voice was so quiet I nearly missed it. A whisper against the inside of my sternum. But it was hers. My wolf. The first full sentence she had spoken in months, and it was not grief.

It was fury.

I sat up slowly. Barnaby lifted his head. I pressed my palm flat against the cabin wall — the old grounding reflex, the ward-worker's habit — and I breathed. In four counts. Out six. The vibration didn't leave. It settled. It made room for itself, like something that had decided to stay.

I didn't try to soothe it. I didn't tell her to rest.

I filed it.

Anger is fuel. I'd spent three years pretending I didn't know that.

---

The knock came at eleven.

Not Margaret's knock — this one was measured, formal, three even taps. I opened the door with the chain still on. A young wolf in a gray courier uniform stood on the porch, an envelope in both hands, the Silverfang Pack seal pressed into black wax across the flap.

"For Juliette Reynolds," he said. He would not meet my eyes for long. "Signature required."

I signed. He left without another word, boots crunching down the gravel toward a black sedan idling at the tree line.

I closed the door. Slid the chain. Sat at the small kitchen table with the envelope between my palms.

The paper was heavy. Cream-colored, edged in silver. The kind of stationery packs used when they wanted you to know exactly how much the moment cost.

I broke the seal.

*To the former ward-keeper of Ironvale —*

I read the line twice. Then a third time.

Not Juliette Reynolds, healer. Not Miss Reynolds. Not any title I'd ever held or been denied. *Former ward-keeper.* A demotion phrased as a description. A hook set into the language before the invitation even began.

The rest was pristine protocol. The Alliance Summit at Silverfang territory. The date, ten days out. Attendance of pack leaders from across the region. My presence "cordially welcomed as an observer of independent standing."

Observer. Independent standing. Every phrase a cage dressed as a courtesy.

I set the invitation on the table and looked at it for a long time.

I knew the architecture. I'd lived inside Penny's architecture for three years without knowing her name for it. This was hers — the precise register, the surgical humiliation, the calculation that the room itself would do the work she didn't have to do out loud.

I reached for my phone.

There was one Silverfang wolf I'd healed two winters back — a scout named Reese who'd taken a claw through the thigh at a border skirmish and never forgotten it. I sent a careful message. Two hours later he called me from what sounded like a truck cab.

"It was her," he said, before I finished the question. "Penny. She sent word up the chain a week ago, made sure the invitation went out under our seal. She picked the date, Juliette. She picked the guest list."

I didn't answer.

"She's counting the Alphas in the room," he said. "The ones who'd never take a rejected mate into their pack. She wants you standing in front of every door that's already closed."

"Thank you, Reese."

"Are you going?"

I looked at the invitation on the table. At Barnaby stretched across the rug in a bar of sun. At my hand, which was not shaking.

"Yes," I said. "I'm going."

He was quiet for a moment. Then: "Good."

---

I spent the next two days at the kitchen table with my journal open and every date I could remember laid out beside it.

I worked backward. Every ward expansion Chase had presented to the Lycan Council as a strategic innovation — I found the entry in my own handwriting, dated weeks earlier, with the diagram I'd designed at two in the morning. Every defensive improvement he'd taken credit for at regional summits — logged, signed with my initials, cross-referenced to the warrior injuries the pattern was built to prevent. Every healing protocol he'd claimed as pack tradition — my notes, my sequences, my adjustments after the first failed trial.

Three years of theft, catalogued by the woman he'd stolen from, because she had never once imagined she'd need the receipts.

On the second night, working through entries from eight months ago, I found a folded page pressed between two ward-maintenance logs.

I'd forgotten it was there.

I opened it slowly.

A transcription in my handwriting — a communication I'd intercepted by accident during a late-night ward session, when the resonance had briefly opened a channel I wasn't meant to hear. I'd written it down out of habit. Recorded everything. That was what I did.

*Penny to Blackmaw contact. First outreach. Terms proposed: safe passage in exchange for ward-pattern schematics and eastern patrol rotation.*

I hadn't understood it then. I'd tucked it into the journal and gone back to work.

I understood it now.

I smoothed the page flat on the table. Barnaby lifted his head and watched me.

Inside my chest, my wolf hummed — low, steady, awake.

I folded the page carefully and slid it back into the journal, in its own marked section. Then I closed the cover and set both hands flat on the leather, and I sat like that for a long time, breathing evenly, while the light outside went gold and then blue and then finally dark.
