Chapter 3

Kamari set the folder on the table between us like it was evidence at a trial. Which, in a way, it was.

"Finished," she said.

I pulled it toward me. The financial analysis was twenty-three pages, cross-referenced and annotated in Kamari's precise handwriting. Every unidentified payment from Silverfang pack funds over the past eighteen months, tracked down to account identifiers and transaction dates. The pattern was unmistakable once you knew to look for it.

Rogue mercenary contracts. Border raids on neutral territory.

I flipped through the pages slowly. My hands didn't shake. The numbers were clean, methodical, damning. Payments made from accounts I'd helped secure through my family's alliances—funds that were supposed to stabilize pack infrastructure, not finance illegal incursions into territory protected by Lycan Council treaty.

"Two of these account identifiers," I said quietly, tapping the page. "I recognize them."

Kamari leaned forward. "From where?"

"Internal records. Treaty negotiations from two years ago." I'd retained copies of everything—not out of paranoia, but out of habit. The same habit that had kept me cataloging Cassian's lies for seven years. "I can match them to the original authorization documents."

Something shifted in Kamari's expression. Not surprise. Satisfaction. "That's a documentation chain."

"Partial," I corrected. "But enough."

"Enough for what?"

I closed the folder. "A Lycan Council dossier."

The silence that followed was sharp and deliberate. Kamari didn't move. She just looked at me, her gaze steady and assessing, and I could see her calculating the implications. The Council didn't intervene in pack disputes lightly. But border-treaty violations—documented, deliberate, financed through traceable funds—those fell under their jurisdiction. Those they couldn't ignore.

"You're building a case," she said finally.

I nodded. "It needs to be airtight. No gaps. No procedural errors. Nothing he can use to claim it's incomplete or politically motivated."

"And when it's airtight?"

I didn't answer that. Not yet. I wasn't ready to say the words aloud—wasn't ready to commit to the next step before I was certain every piece was in place. But Kamari was smart enough to read the silence.

She sat back in her chair. "How long?"

"Two weeks. Maybe three." I opened the folder again, scanning the account identifiers one more time. "I need to cross-reference these with the treaty archive. Pull the original authorization signatures. Confirm the payment chain doesn't have any breaks."

"I'll help."

"I know."

We worked through the afternoon. The light outside shifted from gold to amber, and the folder between us grew thicker as we added documentation—transaction records, treaty clauses, witness statements from border patrols who'd reported the raids. Every piece was deliberate. Every annotation was precise.

By the time the sun set, I had the skeleton of something that could stand before a Council tribunal.

I closed the folder and pressed two fingers briefly to the cold mark on my neck. The habit was becoming automatic now—a reminder, a grounding point. A way to remember exactly why I was doing this.

Kamari watched me for a moment, then asked quietly, "What are you going to do with it?"

I met her gaze. "Whatever it takes."

---

The Nighthollow Pack's alliance banquet was held in their ceremonial hall—a sprawling stone structure with arched ceilings and tables arranged in a strict hierarchy. Alpha-tier seating at the head. Beta and Gamma ranks below. Omegas serving from the edges.

I arrived alone.

My seat was three chairs down from the head of the Alpha-tier table. I was still entitled to it—pending-separation Luna status carried formal rank until the asset division was finalized. I'd verified that with Rowan Voss before I left Silverfang territory. He'd looked like he wanted to argue, but the law was clear.

I sat down. Smoothed the front of my dress. Folded my hands on the table.

Cassian arrived twenty minutes later.

I heard the shift in the room before I saw him—conversations pausing, heads turning, the subtle recalibration of attention that always happened when an Alpha entered a space. He walked in with Bella on his arm.

She was wearing red. A dress cut low enough to make a statement, her hand resting possessively on his forearm. Her gardenia scent reached me from across the hall—cheap, cloying, unmistakable. Cassian's expression was composed, almost bored, but there was a tension in his shoulders that I recognized.

He was performing.

They stopped at the Alpha-tier table. Cassian greeted Declan Hale with the formal nod of equal rank, then turned to the assembled Alphas. His voice carried.

"This is Bella Fox. My chosen mate."

The room went still.

I didn't move. Didn't react. I kept my hands folded and my expression neutral, watching the performance unfold with the same detached precision I'd used to catalog his lies for years.

Bella smiled. It was a practiced smile, designed to project confidence and warmth simultaneously. She inclined her head to the Alphas at the table, playing the role of gracious future Luna.

Cassian's gaze swept the table. It landed on me for a fraction of a second—just long enough for me to see the calculation behind it. This was deliberate. Public. Designed to humiliate.

I looked away first. Not because I was cowed. Because he wasn't worth holding my gaze.

They sat down. The banquet resumed. Conversations picked up again, carefully avoiding the obvious tension, and I ate in silence while Bella's laughter rang out from two seats away.

---

The intermission came an hour later.

I rose from my seat and crossed the hall toward where Declan Hale stood near the refreshment table. He was a pragmatic man—mid-forties, broad-shouldered, with the kind of steady authority that came from years of holding territory through competence rather than dominance. I'd worked with him during the original alliance negotiations. He knew my work.

I approached. "Alpha Hale."

He turned. "Amira." His tone was neutral, but his gaze flicked briefly toward where Cassian and Bella sat. "Interesting evening."

"I need two minutes of your time."

He studied me for a moment, then nodded. We stepped into the side corridor, away from the noise.

I pulled a single folded page from my jacket and handed it to him. "The border-trade proposal Cassian presented last week. Section four, subsection two. It violates clause seven of the original alliance agreement."

Declan unfolded the page. His eyes moved across the text—quickly at first, then slower as he reached the annotated section. I'd highlighted the relevant clause and cross-referenced it with the exact language from the original treaty. The violation was technical, unambiguous, and required only a competent reader to confirm.

Forty seconds.

That's how long it took him.

He looked up. "This is accurate?"

"Verify it yourself. The treaty archive is public record."

He folded the page and handed it back to me. His expression didn't change, but something shifted in his eyes. Recognition. Respect.

"Thank you for bringing this to my attention," he said quietly.

I inclined my head and returned to the hall.

---

When the banquet reconvened, Declan Hale stood.

The room quieted immediately. He didn't raise his voice—he didn't need to. He simply addressed Cassian directly, his tone formal and final.

"Regarding the border-trade proposal submitted last week—I'm declining to move forward. There are unresolved treaty discrepancies that need to be addressed before any agreement can be finalized."

Cassian's composure fractured.

It was subtle—a tightening around his eyes, a brief pause before he responded—but I saw it. So did half the Alphas at the table.

"Discrepancies?" His voice was controlled, but there was an edge underneath it.

"Technical violations of the original alliance terms." Declan's tone was polite, implacable. "I'm sure you'll want to review them before we proceed."

Cassian's jaw tightened. His gaze swept the table, landing on me.

For a fraction of a second, the contempt in his expression was replaced by something sharper. Colder.

Recognition.

He knew I'd done this.

I met his gaze. Held it. My hands were folded on the table, my expression unchanged.

Then I looked away.

Not because I was afraid. Because he wasn't worth my attention anymore.

The banquet continued. Cassian sat down. Bella leaned toward him, whispering something I couldn't hear, and his hand tightened briefly on the edge of the table before he forced himself to relax.

I picked up my glass. Took a sip. The wine was dry and cold, and it tasted like the beginning of something irreversible.
