Chapter 4

The phantom scent started that night.

I didn't know about it then. I was three corridors away in the guest wing, reviewing the border-treaty archive with Kamari, cross-referencing account identifiers until my eyes burned. The work was methodical. Absorbing. It kept my hands busy and my mind focused on something other than the cold mark on my neck or the silence where my wolf used to be.

But Cassian—Cassian was lying beside Bella in the quarters that used to be ours, and something was threading through his awareness that he couldn't name.

I only learned about it later. Pieced it together from fragments—things Bella said to Gabriela, things pack members noticed, the way his behavior began to shift in ways that were small at first and then impossible to ignore.

Moonflower and white sage.

My scent. The one that had been suppressed for years beneath the serum, the one that should have been dormant along with my wolf. But suppressants, I was learning, didn't work the same way once you stopped taking them. The bloodline didn't just wake up. It announced itself. Slowly. Persistently. In ways that bypassed conscious control.

He couldn't locate the source. He checked the ventilation. Opened windows. Changed the sheets. The scent came anyway, weaving through his sleep, pulling him awake in the middle of the night with the irrational certainty that I was somewhere in the room.

I wasn't.

Bella asked him what was wrong. He told her it was pack stress. Then he turned away from her and stared at the ceiling until dawn.

I found that detail satisfying in a way I didn't examine too closely.

---

The fracture in Silverfang's warrior ranks started two days after the Nighthollow banquet.

Kamari came to find me in the archive room, where I was elbow-deep in treaty documentation. She closed the door behind her and set a folded note on the table.

"Three conversations," she said quietly. "Three separate warriors. All asking the same kinds of questions."

I unfolded the note. The names were listed in her precise handwriting, along with timestamps and brief summaries of what each warrior had asked. Legal standing. Asset-separation clauses. Territorial governance under pending Luna status.

Careful questions. Deniable questions. The kind you ask when you're testing the ground before you commit your weight to it.

"They're not defecting," Kamari added. "Not yet. But they're thinking about it."

I read through the note twice. "What did you tell them?"

"Exactly what the law says. Nothing more. Nothing less." She pulled out a chair and sat down across from me. "But they're smart enough to read between the lines. They know what it means when an Alpha's own Beta is answering legal questions for a separated Luna."

I folded the note and added it to the evidence file. Another piece. Another documentation point. The tribunal case was growing thicker by the day.

"Cassian will notice," I said.

"He already has."

---

The full pack muster happened the next morning.

I wasn't there. I was still in the guest wing, technically outside the pack-house proper, which meant I wasn't required to attend. But I heard about it within the hour—Omega servants talked, and Kamari had cultivated enough quiet alliances among them that information flowed both ways.

Cassian had called every ranked wolf to the main hall. He'd stood at the head of the room with Bella beside him, her hand resting on his arm, and delivered a commanding address declaring her his chosen mate and formal Alpha's companion. The Alpha tone had been heavy. Deliberate. The kind of pressure that didn't ask for acknowledgment—it demanded it.

Most wolves had complied immediately. Dropped their eyes. Bared their necks. The reflexive submission that Alpha tone was designed to trigger.

Rowan Voss, the senior elder, had nodded. But there'd been a visible reluctance in the gesture, a fractional pause that everyone in the room had noticed.

Two warriors in the back—Marcus and Theo, both Gamma-ranked—had not dropped their eyes immediately. Just a beat too late. Just long enough for Cassian to mark them.

After the muster dispersed, he'd sent for them privately.

Kamari's contact among the Omegas reported what happened next. Cassian had taken them into a closed room—one of the administrative offices on the second floor—and used focused Alpha tone in an enclosed space. No witnesses. No pack protocol. Just raw dominance applied until compliance was assured.

The two warriors had emerged shaken. One of them had a hand pressed to his chest like he was trying to catch his breath. The other had looked at the floor and kept looking at it all the way down the corridor.

Kamari heard about it within the hour. She added it to the file with a timestamp and the Omega servant's name as corroborating witness.

"He's tightening his grip," she said when she told me. "Which means he knows it's slipping."

I pressed two fingers briefly to the cold mark on my neck. "Good."

---

The phantom scent got worse.

Cassian started avoiding the Luna wing entirely. The corridor I'd walked down every day for seven years became a place he couldn't enter without the scent overwhelming him—moonflower and white sage saturating the air even though I hadn't set foot there since the filing.

He told Gabriela the wing needed renovations. Structural concerns. She'd looked at him like he'd lost his mind but didn't argue.

Bella noticed him distracted during pack meetings. He'd pause mid-sentence, his gaze going distant, like he was tracking something no one else could see. She asked him about it once. He'd snapped at her—something sharp and dismissive—then apologized an hour later with the kind of strained patience that made the apology worse than the snap.

He began looking for me in crowds.

I heard about that from Kamari, who heard it from a Beta-ranked wolf who'd been standing near Cassian during a border patrol briefing. Cassian had scanned the assembled wolves three times, his gaze moving across faces with an urgency that didn't match the context. He was looking for someone. Everyone knew who.

I wasn't there. I was in the archive room, building the case that would dismantle him.

But some part of him—the part that still carried the severed bond's phantom pain, the part that couldn't escape my scent no matter how many doors he closed—was searching anyway.

I thought about that while I worked. About Cassian lying awake in the dark, haunted by a scent he couldn't suppress. About the bond he'd severed in front of three hundred witnesses now tormenting him in ways he couldn't explain or escape.

It wasn't revenge. Not exactly.

But it was the beginning of something that felt a lot like justice.

I added another page to the evidence file. Cross-referenced another account identifier. The tribunal case was almost ready.

Two more weeks. Maybe less.

I pressed my fingers to the mark one more time, then picked up my pen and kept working.
