Chapter 2

I heard him before I saw the evidence of him.

The corridor outside the Luna quarters—my former quarters, technically, though the asset filing I'd submitted at dawn had already begun the legal process of making that distinction real—went quiet in that particular way it always did when Cassian was near. A held-breath silence. The kind the pack had learned to maintain around Alpha aura the way you learn to be still around something that bites.

I was standing at the window when his footsteps reached the door. I didn't move.

The notice was posted at eye level. Kamari had measured that deliberately—eye level for a man of his height, impossible to miss, impossible to claim he hadn't seen. My signature was at the bottom in the same clear strokes I'd used last night. Luna Accord clause 7, subsection 3. Revocation of partner access to separated quarters pending formal asset division. Countersigned by Kamari Jimenez, Beta-ranked witness.

A pause. Long enough that I could picture him reading it.

Then the Alpha tone hit.

It came through the wood like a physical thing—a compression against my chest, low and commanding, the kind of pressure that bypassed rational thought entirely and went straight for the part of the brain that had been trained, for seven years, to respond. Open the door. The command didn't use words. It didn't need to. It was just weight. Just force.

My hand moved toward the door handle before I caught it.

I gripped the door frame instead. The wood was solid under my fingers. Real. I focused on the grain of it, the slight roughness, and breathed through the pressure until it became just pressure—uncomfortable, not irresistible.

I did not open the door.

For a moment, nothing happened. The tone pressed again, harder this time, and I felt the familiar nauseating urge to comply, to smooth things over, to make the discomfort stop the way I'd been making it stop for years. My wolf was still silent. Still gone. There was no answering surge of strength from that hollow space in my chest.

But I didn't need her for this. I just needed to not move my hand.

I didn't move my hand.

From somewhere behind Cassian, I heard Kamari's footsteps. Unhurried. Deliberate. Then silence.

I couldn't see the corridor, but I knew exactly what was happening out there. I'd seen Kamari plant herself in a doorway before. She had a specific way of doing it—weight evenly distributed, arms loose at her sides, eyes forward. Not aggressive. Just immovable. The posture of someone who had made a decision and was waiting for the other person to understand that the decision was final.

The Alpha tone stopped.

The silence that followed lasted maybe fifteen seconds. Long enough for Cassian to calculate whether physically confronting his own Beta in a public corridor—in front of whatever Omega servants had inevitably materialized to witness the scene—was worth what it would cost him. Long enough for him to decide it wasn't.

His footsteps retreated.

I exhaled. The compression in my chest dissolved slowly, like ice melt, leaving behind a dull ache and something else underneath it. Something quieter. Steadier.

I'd held.

Kamari appeared in the room a minute later, sliding through the connecting door. She didn't comment on what had just happened. She set a cup of tea on the table and sat down across from me like we were continuing a conversation we'd paused.

"Filing's logged," she said. "Rowan Voss processed it himself. Looked like he'd swallowed something unpleasant, but he processed it."

"Good." I picked up the tea. My hands were steady. "How did Cassian find out?"

"Pack-channel notification. Standard system message." She smiled, thin and satisfied. "Same way he'd find out about a supply order or a fence repair."

I thought about that. About Cassian reading a bureaucratic notification about the dissolution of his access to my quarters, formatted exactly like a maintenance alert. No confrontation. No drama. Just a system message.

Good.

The morning moved. I ate. I reviewed the asset list I'd been quietly compiling for the past three months—every resource, every alliance contact, every border-treaty document that had originated from my family's connections rather than Cassian's. The file was thorough. It needed to be.

Gabriela arrived at two in the afternoon.

I heard her voice before her footsteps, which was typical. She had never learned that volume was not the same thing as authority.

"—no standing whatsoever, a wolfless rejected she-wolf invoking clauses that were written for real Lunas, this is an embarrassment to this pack and to my son's—"

I opened the door.

Gabriela stopped mid-sentence. Behind her, two Omega servants looked at the floor with the focused intensity of people pretending to be furniture.

She was wearing her formal Alpha-mother ensemble. Hair immaculate. Chin elevated. The full performance.

I waited.

She resumed. Something about standing, about tradition, about the humiliation I was inflicting on the Webb name by invoking legal protections I had no right to. Her voice was sharp and certain, the voice of a woman who had never once been told that her certainty was not the same as being correct.

I let her finish.

Then I said, "The Accord does not require a wolf. It requires a filing."

I closed the door.

Her voice continued through the wood. I counted the seconds. Thirty-one before the footsteps finally retreated down the corridor.

From across the room, Kamari's pen moved across her notepad. I heard the scratch of it without looking up.

"Timestamped," she said quietly.

I nodded. Outside, the afternoon light was shifting toward gold, and somewhere in the pack-channel system, a bureaucratic notification was sitting in Cassian's inbox like a splinter he couldn't reach.

I pressed two fingers briefly to the cold mark on my neck.

Then I picked up my pen and went back to work.
