Chapter 2

Torin arrived at the gates of the Silvercrest estate just before noon, looking exhausted. The dark circles under his eyes spoke volumes about the chaos at the Shadowridge border.

Nash met him at the gatehouse. I stood a few paces back on the stone terrace, the cool mountain breeze brushing past my cheeks. Torin didn't dare cross the boundary line onto Lycan soil. He merely handed over a heavy envelope bearing the Shadowridge seal.

Nash broke the wax with his thumb, scanned the single sheet of paper, and turned to me. He didn’t say a word. He just held it out.

I took it. The handwriting was sharp and rushed, cutting deep grooves into the parchment:

*Allyson,*

*By pack law, you are required to attend the mandatory border security summit tonight at seven. Your presence is non-negotiable. Stop this childish tantrum and come home.*

*— Rhodes*

Even now, he thought I was throwing a fit. He thought a legal summons and the phantom tug of our unfinished bond would make me run back to him.

I folded the paper in half, then in half again, and slipped it into the pocket of my coat.

"You don't have to go," Nash said quietly. His golden eyes were steady, entirely free of pressure. "Under Lycan jurisdiction, his summons is dust."

"I know," I replied, my voice smooth and low. "I'm not going for him."

I walked into the Shadowridge great hall at five minutes past seven.

The heavy double doors groaned as I pushed them open. The room was packed with warriors, elders, and tracker squads, the air thick with tension and the smell of blood from the morning's border skirmishes.

A sudden hush rippled through the room the moment my boots clicked against the stone floor. Whispers rose like dry leaves. Some warriors looked relieved to see me; others shifted in their chairs with clear unease.

I wore a dark charcoal dress with a high collar that completely hid the platinum Lycan crest resting against my skin. My hair was pulled back, neat and practical. I carried no weapons, no purse, and no trace of the soft, compliant mate they were used to seeing.

At the head table, Rhodes sat in the Alpha’s chair. Beside him, dressed in pale silk that looked entirely out of place for a military briefing, sat Milena.

Milena’s eyes sharpened the second she saw me. Her hand paused midway to her teacup. She was a scavenger; she could smell a change in the wind faster than anyone. She leaned forward, scanning me from head to toe, searching for the usual quiet guilt or hesitation in my shoulders. She found none.

Rhodes sat up straighter. His jaw tightened, the dark stubble on his face making him look haggard. Through the thin, bruised thread of our incomplete mate bond, I felt a clumsy, demanding pulse. He was reaching for me, trying to test the link, trying to feel my submission.

He found nothing. Just dead, icy static.

A flicker of confusion crossed his features. He blinked, cleared his throat, and looked down at the tactical maps spread out before him.

"Take your seat, Allyson," Rhodes said, his voice rough. He tried to sound completely unaffected, but his knuckles were white where he gripped the edge of the table.

I didn't take a seat near the dais. I stood near the back, by the pillar near the exit, keeping my hands resting loosely at my sides.

Rhodes began the briefing, his voice echoing off the timber beams as he went over the rogue incursions along the collapsed eastern line. But he couldn't keep his focus. Every few seconds, his gaze drifted back to me.

I never looked at him once. My eyes stayed on the maps, on the exits, on the faces of the warriors.

Twenty minutes into the meeting, Milena stirred. She picked up a glass pitcher, poured a small splash of water into her tumbler, and rose from her seat. Instead of walking toward the sideboard, she drifted into the crowd, nodding delicately at a few older wolves who offered her polite smiles.

Slowly, deliberately, she made her way toward my pillar.

She stopped two feet in front of me, smelling heavily of artificial rosewater. Her eyes dropped to my throat. The top button of my high collar had slipped open slightly, just enough to reveal the tiny glass vial hanging beneath it.

"Allyson," Milena murmured, her voice sweet and carrying clearly over the lull in Rhodes's speech. "You look so pale. Are you sleeping well?"

I didn't answer.

Her gaze locked onto the vial. Her lips curved into a tiny, cruel line that vanished before anyone else could catch it. With exaggerated wonder, she reached out her manicured hand.

"What is this?" she asked loudly, drawing the eyes of the nearest guards. "A good-luck charm? I didn't know you wore trinkets."

Her fingers closed around the crystal cylinder, tugging it upward.

My breath stopped. The world narrowed to that tiny piece of glass, holding the only physical piece of my lost child left on this earth.

"Give that back," I said.

My voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried a deadly, razor-sharp edge.

Milena’s eyes flashed with venom. Her hand twitched. Whether she lost her grip on purpose or simply didn't care didn't matter. Her fingers spread wide.

The pendant fell.

It hit the hard slate floor between our boots. The sound was small, like a single dry twig snapping.

The glass shattered into a dozen glittering pieces.

And then, the air filled with it.

After two years sealed away in the dark, the scent exploded into the room. It was sweet, fragile, and heartbreakingly pure—the unmistakable scent of baby milk, soft downy skin, and the wild pine of an unborn pup that had died before taking its first breath.

Every single wolf in the hall froze.

The warriors stopped talking. The elders went rigid. Beta Torin looked up from the maps, his eyes wide with horror as he recognized the biological signature hanging in the damp room.

Milena stumbled backward, her hand flying to her chest. She sucked in a theatrical, shuddering gasp. Her shoulders began to shake, her eyes welling with instant, practiced tears.

"Rhodes!" Milena cried out, her voice trembling with hysteria as she stumbled toward the dais. "She... she lunged at me! She threatened me! I only wanted to look—"

She didn't need to finish.

The sight of Milena cowering triggered Rhodes's instinct like a trap snapping shut. He didn't look at the shattered glass. He didn't smell the ghost of his own dead pup on the floor. He only saw Milena crying.

Rhodes shoved his chair back, his eyes flashing dangerous amber.

Through the fraying mate bond, he slammed his full Alpha weight into my chest like an iron hammer.

*"Kneel,"* his Alpha tone roared through the hall, vibrating the very stones beneath my feet.

The biological command tore through my muscles, tearing away my control. A gasp ripped from my throat as the sheer force crushed down on my spine.

My knees hit the stone hard.

My palms slapped down to brace myself, coming straight down onto the jagged shards of glass. The sharp edges sliced into my skin, but I didn't feel the sting. All I felt was the soft, broken fluff of my baby's birth fur scattering between my bleeding fingers.

The room was so quiet you could hear the rain tapping on the high windows.

Rhodes stood tall on the dais, glaring down at me through the heavy silence, his chest heaving with arrogant authority.

"Apologize to her," he commanded, his voice absolute and merciless. "Now."
