My Husband's Whole Family Hid His Mistress Novel Cover

My Husband's Whole Family Hid His Mistress

For eight long years, she accepted her husband's lie that his family simply didn't celebrate holidays. But the truth was far crueler: every year, they gathered without her, showering his mistress with affection and gifts purchased from their shared funds. Worse, he'd siphoned her earnings to finance the other woman's apartment, all while planning to discard her once the mortgage was paid. Yet he underestimated her. As a certified public accountant, she meticulously traced every stolen dollar, secured a formidable divorce attorney, and arrived at their family dinner armed with a dessert—and devastating proof.

Chapter 1

Grant's phone buzzed against the kitchen island at 9:14 on a Friday night.

He was in the shower. I could hear the water running down the hall, and the low hum of whatever song he always hummed when he thought no one was listening.

I didn't reach for the phone. Not at first.

Then the screen lit up again.

Diane: Elise, honey, dinner Sunday at six. Grant has been asking when you'll come over again. You're always family here, sweetheart.

I read it twice.

Diane Bennett was my mother-in-law. Sixty-three, pearl earrings, a laugh that never quite reached her eyes when she aimed it at me. In eight years, she had never once called me sweetheart.

Elise. I knew that name. Elise Morgan. Diane's friend from the garden club, I thought. Or her church. Grant had mentioned her once, maybe twice.

Grant has been asking.

I picked up the phone.

Grant's passcode was our wedding date. He'd never changed it. I used to think that meant something.

The message wasn't a text between Diane and Elise. It was a group chat. At the top, in clean white letters, it said Bennett Family.

I tapped the name.

Diane. Robert. Brooke. Tyler. Grant. Elise.

Robert, his father. Brooke, his younger sister. Tyler, Brooke's husband.

And Elise.

Not me.

I scrolled to the very top. It took a long time. Years of messages slid past my thumb like a train I'd never been allowed to board.

Group created: April 12, 2018.

Six months after our wedding.

A laugh came out of me. Short and ugly, loud in the empty kitchen. I clapped a hand over my mouth.

I remembered that April. Grant at the stove, stirring pasta, talking over his shoulder.

"Mom wants to start a family chat," he'd said. "All the holiday stuff, birthdays, plans. That way nobody misses anything."

"Add me," I'd told him, smiling.

"Already done, babe. You'll see it."

I never saw it. I assumed I'd missed the invite. I assumed a lot of things.

My fingertips went cold against the glass. I kept scrolling.

Diane: Everyone, please welcome Elise! She's been such a help to me this year.

Brooke: Finally! Hi Elise!!

Diane: She's so thoughtful. She knows how to take care of people. Grant, you should bring her by more.

Grant: Working on it, Mom.

My jaw locked. I made myself keep going.

Thanksgiving, three years ago.

Diane: Turkey at 4. Elise is bringing her pecan pie!

That same week, Grant had walked into our bedroom with his phone in his hand and a sorry look on his face.

"Mom's not feeling great," he'd said. "They're canceling Thanksgiving. Just us this year, okay?"

"Should I bring her soup?"

"No, no. She just wants to rest."

I'd cooked a whole turkey for two people. We ate leftovers for a week.

Christmas, the year after.

Robert: Fire's going. Elise, you're in charge of the eggnog again.

And Grant, in our living room, kissing my forehead. "My parents are flying to Arizona. Last minute. They said sorry."

I scrolled faster now. My thumb shook.

Grant: Elise, what do you want for dinner Saturday? Mom's asking.

Elise: Anything with salmon! 😊

Grant: Salmon it is. You free next weekend too?

He asked her what she liked to eat.

In eight years, he had never once asked me what I wanted for dinner. He just ordered Thai, because he liked Thai.

Down the hall, the water shut off.

I froze. Then I moved fast.

I opened his camera roll, then switched back. No. Too slow. I grabbed my own phone and snapped pictures of the screen. The creation date. The member list. The welcome. Thanksgiving. Christmas. Salmon it is.

I opened my private email, the one Grant didn't know the password to, and sent every photo to myself. The little bar crawled across the screen.

Sending. Sending.

The bathroom door creaked.

Sent.

I deleted the photos from my camera roll, put Grant's phone back face-down, exactly where it had been, and sat at the dining table with my hands folded like a woman waiting for a job interview.

Grant came out in a gray T-shirt, rubbing a towel through his hair. He smelled like the cedar soap I bought him every month.

"You're quiet," he said.

"Am I?"

He walked behind me and squeezed my shoulder. Two pats. The same two pats he gave his golf buddies.

"Work again?" he asked. "You look wiped out."

The words climbed up my throat. Who is Elise? Why am I not in the chat? Where were you every Thanksgiving?

I opened my mouth.

On the island, his phone lit up.

I didn't have to lean over. I could see it from the table.

Elise: ❤️

Grant glanced at it. His thumb moved over the screen, quick and easy, like a habit. Then he slid the phone into his pocket.

"Probably Brooke," he said. "She's been texting all day about nothing."

I closed my mouth.

"Yeah," I said. "Work's been a lot."

"Don't stay up too late, Claire."

He kissed the top of my head and went to bed.

I followed twenty minutes later. He was already on his side, his back to me, the way he'd slept for years. I used to tell myself it was because he ran hot. Because he liked the window side.

I lay there and stared at the ceiling.

I thought about my thirty-second birthday. I'd booked a table at the little Italian place in Newton. Grant had called at five.

"Babe, I'm so sorry. Dad needs help with the gutters. Can we do it next weekend?"

We never did it next weekend.

I thought about Diane, the one Easter I'd been invited to. She'd handed me a paper plate and said, "Claire, you can sit at the kids' table. More room there."

Everyone had laughed. Grant had laughed too.

"She's kidding," he'd whispered. "You're too sensitive."

I'd believed him. I'd believed I was bad at people. Too quiet. Too awkward. That if I just tried harder, brought better wine, smiled more, they'd open the door.

But the door was never closed by accident.

He built it. He locked it. And he handed the key to someone else.

Grant snored softly. I didn't cry. I was surprised by that. I kept waiting for it, and it just didn't come.

At 5:40, the sky outside turned the color of dishwater.

I got up, made coffee, and opened my laptop at the dining table.

I made a folder. I named it Receipts.

First the photos. Then I logged into our joint bank account, the one Grant said he "handled so I didn't have to stress."

I scrolled back to last November. Thanksgiving week.

There was a charge I'd never seen.

Whole Foods, Brookline. $212.40.

Below it, another one, the same afternoon.

Transfer to E. Morgan — $3,500.

My coffee went cold in my hand.

I clicked on the transfer history.

It wasn't the only one.
