Chapter 2

Grant came into the kitchen at 7:30, knotting his navy tie.

"Client dinner tonight," he said. "Don't wait up to eat."

"Which client?"

He paused, fingers on the knot. Just for half a second.

"Harmon Group. You don't know them." He grabbed his keys from the bowl. "Probably run late. You know how these guys are."

"I know," I said.

He leaned down and kissed my forehead. Warm, quick, the same spot as always. Like stamping a form.

"Love you, Claire."

The door shut behind him. His car backed out of the driveway.

I stayed where I was until the engine noise faded. Then I opened the laptop, pulled up the folder named Receipts, and started at the beginning.

Not the beginning of the chat. The beginning of the lies.

November 2019.

Diane: Thanksgiving at our house this year! Everyone here by 2.

Elise: I'll handle the turkey and the apple pie, Diane. Don't you lift a finger. 🥧

Diane: What would I do without you, honey?

Grant: I'll come early to help set up.

I stared at those six words. I'll come early to help set up.

I remembered that week. He'd come home from work with his shoulders slumped, dropping onto the couch beside me.

"Bad news," he'd said. "Mom and Dad are driving up to Maine. Some old friends from college. They won't be back till Sunday."

"Oh, honey." I'd rubbed his back. "That's okay. We'll do something small."

"You're not mad?"

"Why would I be mad? They deserve a trip."

"You're too good to me," he'd said.

And I'd believed I was being good.

I scrolled down. A photo, posted at 4:52 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

The whole Bennett family in front of a stone fireplace. Robert with his arm around Diane. Brooke making bunny ears behind Tyler's head. And Grant, right in the middle, grinning.

He was wearing the charcoal wool sweater I'd given him for our anniversary. I'd saved up for it. I'd wrapped it in brown paper and tied it with real ribbon.

Elise stood beside him in a cream dress. Her shoulder touched his arm. Her smile was easy, like she'd been standing there her whole life.

Diane: My favorite people. ❤️

I zoomed in on the sweater. On the little loose thread at the cuff I'd meant to fix.

Then I zoomed out and kept going.

February 2020.

I didn't need to check the date. I knew it by heart.

Gallbladder surgery. Grant drove me to Mass General at six in the morning. He signed the forms at the front desk. Then his phone buzzed.

"Shit," he'd said, staring at it. "Claire, there's a fire at the office. The Kessler account. They need me."

"Right now? They're taking me back in an hour."

"I know, babe. I know." He'd squeezed my hand. "I'll be back before you wake up. Promise."

I woke up alone.

My throat felt like sandpaper. I couldn't reach the water cup on the tray. A nurse with tired eyes held the straw to my mouth.

"Is someone coming for you, hon?"

"My husband," I'd said. "He had an emergency."

She'd nodded and said nothing. I remember that nothing very clearly now.

The chat from that day:

Grant: Booked Lucca for 7. Elise, you still like the gnocchi?

Elise: You remembered!

Diane: Ask for a window table, Grant. Elise doesn't like loud places. She gets headaches.

Grant: Already did. 😉

A wink.

I was lying in a paper gown with a drain in my side, and my husband was sending a wink about window tables.

My stomach rolled. I pushed back from the table and made it to the sink just in time. Nothing came up but coffee and spit.

I ran the tap. Splashed my face. Stood there gripping the counter until the room stopped tilting.

Then I sat back down.

June 2021.

My birthday.

Grant: Oh no. Claire's birthday is today. I almost forgot lol

Diane: She can buy herself a cake. We have more important things to plan.

Brooke: 😂😂😂

Elise: Guys, be nice. Don't make it hard on Grant. He has a lot going on.

I read Elise's message three times.

Be nice. She was defending him. Not me. Him.

That night, I'd bought two ribeyes from the butcher on Harvard Street. I'd lit the tall white candles from our wedding. I'd made his favorite, chocolate lava cake, from a recipe that took me three tries to get right.

At 8, I texted him.

Me: Steaks are resting. Where are you?

At 9:30.

Me: Grant?

At 11:47, he finally answered.

Grant: Client dinner ran long. Sorry. Don't wait up.

I'd blown out the candles myself. I'd eaten one bite of the cake standing over the sink.

And here was the truth, scrolling past my thumb. She can buy herself a cake.

I laughed. It burst out of me, high and strange, and I couldn't stop it. I laughed until my eyes stung.

Because I'd met Elise once. At a charity brunch Diane hosted. Elise had worn a silk scarf and talked about her trip to Lisbon, and Diane had hung on every word.

I remember driving home that day thinking, I wish Diane looked at me like that.

I'd been jealous of her.

I never once wondered if she was sitting in my chair.

By noon, I had subfolders. 2019. 2020. 2021. All the way to this year.

Each screenshot got a date. Each date got a note. Thanksgiving: told me Maine. Surgery: told me office fire. Birthday: told me client dinner.

My hands had stopped shaking somewhere around 2022. I didn't notice when.

I picked up my phone. Opened a new text. Typed Diane's name.

My thumb hovered.

Why? I could ask. Why did you do this to me?

I deleted it.

They'd had eight years to tell me. Diane. Brooke. Robert. Tyler. Elise. Five people, and not one of them had ever said, Claire, you should know.

They didn't owe me an answer. They'd already given me one.

I closed the phone and kept typing notes.

Grant got home at 6:15. Early, for a client dinner.

"Hey, you." He held up a small gold box. "Saw these at that shop near the office. Your favorite, right?"

Sea salt caramels. The little French place on Newbury.

"You remembered," I said.

The words left my mouth before I could stop them. Elise's words. You remembered!

"Of course I remembered." He set the box in my hands and smiled. That soft, crinkly-eyed smile I'd married. "Hey, what are you doing this weekend? Want to see a movie? That new thriller's out."

"Which night?"

"Saturday? Or Sunday. Whatever works for you."

Sunday. Dinner at six. You're always family here, sweetheart.

"Sunday's fine," I said.

"Great." He kissed my cheek and loosened his tie. "I'm gonna change."

I stood in the kitchen holding the gold box.

My stomach turned over. Slow, then hard.

He knew how to do this. He knew how to bring chocolates and remember favorites and book window tables. He'd always known.

He just saved it for her.

And left me holding the box, nodding, understanding. Always understanding.

Down the hall, I heard his phone ring. He answered fast, before the second ring.

"Hey," he said, his voice dropping low. "No, she doesn't suspect anything."
