Chapter 3

The text came on a Tuesday. I was standing at the kitchen counter, coffee in one hand, Benjamin's lunch box in the other, and my phone buzzed against the tile.

Unknown number. Eleven words.

*We should meet. Woman to woman. No drama. Just clarity.*

I set the lunch box down.

I already knew who it was. There was only one person in the architecture of this wreckage who would phrase it exactly that way—*woman to woman*, like we were equals in something, like she hadn't spent months sleeping in my husband's bed while I slept alone down the hall from our son.

I called Dana that evening.

"Don't," she said before I finished the sentence. "Eleanora. Do not."

"I'm going."

"She wants to watch you bleed. That's the whole point of this meeting."

"I know what she wants." I looked out the window at the river. "That's not what she's going to get."

Dana was quiet for a moment. Then: "You are the most stubborn person I have ever loved."

"I'll call you after."

I needed to see it. All of it. The complete shape of what had been done—not the outline, not the inference, but the actual thing, laid out in front of me in full light. I needed to close the last door cleanly. And I couldn't do that without knowing exactly what was behind it.

---

She was already there when I arrived.

Of course she was.

Lyric Gonzalez had chosen a corner table—good light, clear sightlines to the entrance. She was dressed simply, expensively, in a way that said she had not tried too hard and knew it showed. Her hair was down. She had ordered already. She watched me cross the room with the calm, settled expression of a woman who believed she had already won whatever game this was.

I sat down. I ordered coffee. I looked at her.

She was beautiful. I registered that the way you register weather—as a fact, without attachment.

"I'm glad you came," she said. Her voice was warm. Intimate. Like we were old friends catching up. "I wasn't sure you would."

"Here I am."

She smiled and leaned forward slightly, elbows on the table, and she began.

The Hamptons house—a rental in Bridgehampton, the last weekend of every month, timed to align with Demetrius's standing "client conference" that I had never once questioned. The pet name—something in Spanish, soft syllables she let sit in the air between us. The lingerie from a boutique on Spring Street, a specific style in a specific color, chosen by him. The restaurant in Tribeca where the host greeted them by name, where they had a preferred table by the window.

She delivered each detail with care. Gently. Like she was doing me a kindness by being thorough.

I watched her face while she talked. I kept my hands still in my lap. I kept my coffee cup on the table and did not reach for it.

She was watching mine. Waiting for the crack. The flinch. The moment my composure slipped and gave her what she'd come here for.

I gave her nothing.

She shifted. Barely. A small recalibration.

Then she lowered her voice—softer now, almost gentle—and tilted her head.

"Margaret is already talking to an attorney," she said. "About Benjamin." A small pause. "A child deserves a real family. Don't you think? Not a—" she let the word find its own shape "—single situation."

She was smiling. Just slightly.

I looked at her for a moment.

Then I picked up my coffee cup and finished what was in it. I set it back on the saucer with careful, deliberate precision. I took two folded bills from my wallet and placed them on the table.

I stood up.

"Thank you," I said, "for confirming exactly who you are."

I walked out.

---

In the taxi going home I pressed my back against the seat and looked at the ceiling and my hands were shaking.

Not from fear. Not from grief. From the particular physical shock of a thing you have been bracing against for a long time finally arriving—the body's response to impact, not to damage.

And then it came.

The memory I had carried for years like a stone in my chest. Demetrius in the chair beside my bed. The pneumonia winter, four years into our marriage, when my fever hit 103 and he had stayed up three nights without complaint—spoon-feeding me soup, carrying me to the bathroom, sleeping upright in the armchair so he'd hear me if I called. The one week. The one proof I had returned to again and again, the anchor I had used to justify everything that came after.

It surfaced now, fully and completely, the way a photograph looks just before it burns.

I let myself see it one last time.

Then I let it go.

The taxi moved through traffic. Outside, the city went on being the city. I took one slow breath, and then another.

I took out my phone and called Victor Hale.

"Margaret Powell is filing for custody," I said when he picked up. "I need us to be ready."

"We are," he said.

I looked out the window at the lights coming on across the bridge.

"Good," I said. "So am I."
