My husband’s mistress got pregnant before I did Chapter 1
Seven years. Eleven negative tests. Three rounds of hormone shots that left my stomach purple with bruises.
And now, a heartbeat.
I sat in the hospital parking garage, holding the tiny gray ultrasound photo against the steering wheel. I'd already bought a silver frame for it. I'd already practiced what I'd say.
*Gale, meet your son. Or daughter. We'll find out in a few weeks.*
My phone buzzed. His name lit up the screen.
"Hey, you," I answered, smiling so hard my cheeks hurt. "Are you parking? I'm on level three."
"Honey, I'm sorry." His voice was low and rushed. "Something came up. Emergency board meeting. The investors flew in early."
My smile slipped. "Today? Gale, you promised. It's the twelve-week scan."
"I know. I know, and I hate it." He sighed, and I could almost see him pinching the bridge of his nose. "You know I'd be there if I could. Morrow Tech doesn't run itself."
"It ran itself fine last Tuesday when you played golf."
"Penny." He laughed softly. "Don't be like that. Send me pictures, okay? I want to see everything."
I stared at the photo in my lap. The surprise was supposed to happen in person.
"Fine," I said. "Go save your company."
"That's my girl. Love you."
He hung up before I could say it back.
---
The exam took forty minutes. Dr. Lindqvist, my OB, squeezed cold gel on my belly and turned the screen toward me.
"There," she said, tapping the monitor. "Strong heartbeat. A hundred and sixty beats per minute. This baby is a fighter, Penny."
I covered my mouth with both hands.
"Is your husband in the waiting room?" she asked. "I can print an extra copy."
"He's in a meeting."
She paused, then gave me a kind nod. "Print two anyway. Men get weepy over these. Trust me."
I laughed, but it came out wet.
I thought about every night Gale had held me after another failed test. The bathroom floor. The way he'd stroked my hair and whispered, *Honey, even if we never have kids, I'll only ever love you.*
I believed him. I still believed him.
I wanted him to cry over this picture.
---
I stepped out of the exam room, tucking both copies into my purse.
Then I froze.
Across the hallway, near the prenatal waiting area, a man in a charcoal suit knelt on one knee. His dark hair was perfectly combed. His watch caught the light—the Patek I'd given him for our fifth anniversary.
He was tying a woman's shoelace.
Gently. Carefully. Like she was made of glass.
The woman was young. Maybe twenty-four. Long blonde hair, pink sweater stretched tight over a round, obvious belly.
"Ow!" She giggled and grabbed his shoulder. "Baby kicked me again. Hurry, feel it."
Gale didn't hesitate. He pressed his palm flat against her stomach and tilted his head up at her.
"There's my little troublemaker," he murmured.
The way he smiled at her—I knew that smile. I'd been living on that smile for seven years.
The ultrasound photo slid from my fingers. It drifted to the tile and landed face-up, right at my feet.
I didn't pick it up.
My legs moved before my brain did.
"Gale."
His head snapped around. For one second, his face went completely blank. Then his jaw locked tight.
"Penny." He stood, brushing off his knee. "What are you doing here?"
"What am *I* doing here?" My voice cracked high and ugly. "I had my appointment. The one you skipped. For your board meeting."
"The meeting ended early."
"So you came to the same hospital? To the maternity floor?" I pointed at her stomach. My hand was shaking. "To *touch* her?"
"Lower your voice." He glanced at the nurses' station. "People are staring."
"Let them stare!"
"Penny, you're overreacting." He stepped between us, half-shielding her with his body. *Shielding her from me.* "She's a friend. She's going through a hard time, and she needs someone to look after her. That's all this is."
"A friend."
"Yes."
"You kneel on hospital floors for your friends?"
He opened his mouth. Nothing came out.
Behind him, the blonde woman shifted. She reached out and laced her fingers through Gale's—slowly, so I could see every second of it.
Gale didn't pull away.
"Hi," she said brightly, like we'd met at a brunch. "You must be Penny. I'm Bella."
I stared at their joined hands.
"I'm five months along." She rubbed her belly with her free hand, little circles, round and round. "Gale talks about the baby all the time. He says it's the thing he's looking forward to most in the whole world. Isn't that sweet?"
Five months.
Five months ago, Gale had held me on our kitchen floor after the last failed round of IVF. He'd kissed my forehead and told me to stop torturing myself.
*We don't need a baby, Honey. We have each other.*
I looked up at my husband.
"Gale." My voice came out flat now. Almost calm. "Tell me she's lying."
His thumb moved across Bella's knuckles. A tiny, absent stroke.
"Penny, this isn't the place," he said.
"It's a yes-or-no question."
"Can we talk at home?"
"Is it *yours*?"
Silence.
He looked at the floor. At the ultrasound photo by my shoe. His eyebrows drew together like he was trying to figure out what it was.
And I laughed.
I actually laughed—a short, broken sound that didn't belong to me. A nurse turned around. Bella's eyes went wide.
"Seven years," I said. "Seven years, Gale. Do you know how many needles I put in my stomach for you?"
"Penny—"
"Do you know I threw up every morning this week and didn't tell you because I wanted to *surprise* you?"
His face changed. Something flickered behind his eyes.
He looked down at the photo again. Really looked this time.
"Penny," he said slowly. "Is that—"
But Bella gasped. Loud. Theatrical. She pressed her manicured fingers over her lips and turned huge, innocent eyes up at him.
"Oh my God, Gale." She blinked at me, then back at him. "Wait. You told me you and your wife hadn't slept together in *years*."
