Chapter 1

The charger wasn't in my purse.

I remembered that much—standing in the hallway in my socks, Demetrius's laptop bag unzipped at my feet, the shower running behind the closed bathroom door. A Tuesday morning. Nothing special about it. Benjamin was still asleep. The coffee was still brewing. I reached in past a folded receipt, a tangled set of earbuds, and my fingers closed around something small and rectangular.

Not a charger.

I pulled it out.

A box of condoms. Opened. Most of them gone.

I stood there for a moment. Just stood there, holding it. The shower kept running. The coffee maker beeped. Down the hall, I could hear Benjamin shifting in his bed, that small rustling sound he made before he fully woke up.

What I felt was not what I expected to feel.

No tears. No shattering. Just a long, slow exhale—like a door I'd been leaning against for years had finally swung open, and I was simply walking through it.

We hadn't touched each other in over a year. We'd been sleeping in separate bedrooms for three. I had reached for him, once, twice, a dozen times—and each time he'd called me too much, too needy, too something. I had learned to stop reaching. I had learned to need less.

My body had already done the math. I was just holding the proof now.

I set the box on the dresser when he came out of the bathroom, towel around his waist, phone already in his hand. He saw it. He looked at it the way you look at a thing you were hoping wouldn't still be there.

"Don't start this, Eleanora."

That was all he said. He reached past me for his shirt—actually reached past me, like I was a piece of furniture slightly in his way—and pulled it off the hanger.

"Whose are they?"

"Don't." A sharp exhale. He shook his head and buttoned his shirt without looking at me.

That was when the door opened.

Margaret Powell did not knock. She never knocked. She had a key to this house—our house, the house I had repainted and refinished and made livable over seven years—and she used it the way she used everything: as evidence of ownership.

She was dressed for brunch. Cream blouse, pearl earrings, the particular expression she reserved for situations she had already decided were my fault.

"What on earth is going on?" She looked between us, then at the box on the dresser, and her face shifted into something tight and deliberate. "Eleanora. What is this?"

"I found those in his bag."

"And so you're—" She made a small, dismissive gesture with her hand, the kind that erases whatever came before it. "You're blowing nothing into a crisis. Again." She moved past me like I was a draft she was walking through. "This is exactly what I mean, Demetrius. This paranoia. This is what drives you away."

From the kitchen doorway, I could see Alivia. Demetrius's younger sister, leaning against the frame with her coffee cup, watching. She had their mother's eyes and none of her composure—she wasn't even trying to hide the smirk.

Demetrius said nothing.

He picked up his laptop bag. He walked to the front door. He left.

I stood in the hallway of my own home and watched him go.

That evening, after Margaret and Alivia had finished their brunch and their quiet laughter and their departure, after Demetrius had retreated to his study and Benjamin had fallen asleep with his hand curled under his cheek, I sat down at the kitchen table.

I wrote the divorce agreement by hand. It didn't take long. I knew exactly what I wanted—which was almost nothing. No alimony. No claim on the brownstone. No share of whatever Demetrius called his. I had built this life out of my own labor and I was leaving it behind because I refused to fight for a house that had never really been a home.

I wanted one thing. One line on the page.

Sole custody of Benjamin Powell.

I left it on his desk before I went to sleep.

In the morning, he signed it in minutes. He didn't read it carefully. He didn't pause.

Then he looked up at me and said, "It's Lyric. Lyric Gonzalez. She came back into my life."

Just like that. Casual. The way you'd name a coffee shop you'd started going to again.

No apology. No flinch. Nothing.

I nodded once. I took the signed papers. I walked out of the study.

I packed Benjamin's things first. His clothes, his stuffed rabbit, the small box of crayons he carried everywhere. Then my own things. Then the few objects that were unambiguously mine.

I left the curtains I had sewn by hand. I left the bookshelf I had refinished over a long weekend the second year of our marriage. I left the growth chart on the kitchen doorframe—all those small penciled lines, each one dated in my handwriting, marking how tall our son had grown in this house.

I left it all.

As I carried the last box out, Margaret was standing in the entryway. She looked at me with that breezy, settled certainty of hers.

"You'll come crawling back," she said, "when you realize no one else will want a divorced mother."

From the kitchen, Alivia laughed. Light. Careless. Entertained.

I walked to the car. I buckled Benjamin into his seat. He was holding his rabbit and looking at me with his quiet, careful eyes—five years old and already so good at reading a room.

"Where are we going, Mama?"

"Somewhere good," I said.

I started the engine. I did not check the rearview mirror.

I already knew what was behind me.
