Chapter 3

I became a fixture at Sterling's office twice a week, like clockwork. Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons. I carried artisanal coffee from the shop on 28th Street—the one Sterling used to complain was 'pretentious' when I suggested it. Now I brought him a fresh cup, still hot, along with whatever I'd baked that morning. Chocolate croissants. Lemon scones. Small, domestic offerings that said 'I'm trying.'

The receptionist, a young woman named Zoe, always looked at me with that particular blend of pity and discomfort people reserve for the visibly broken. 'Mrs. Nichols!' she'd say too brightly. 'You're so thoughtful!'

I'd smile back, soft and grateful. 'Just looking after my husband. How's your day going?'

The first visit, Sterling barely looked up from his computer when I entered his office. 'Put it on the desk,' he said without turning around. I set the coffee down gently and left without another word. The second visit, he managed a distracted nod. By the third, he was telling his assistant to 'expect Mrs. Nichols' on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as if my presence was a scheduled meeting he was graciously allowing.

That was the day I first saw Brooke's office.

She had a corner space with floor-to-ceiling glass walls—a promotion from 'executive assistant' to 'Vice President of Operations' that Sterling had never mentioned at home. I caught her watching me as I walked past, that same smirk playing on her lips. She didn't bother hiding it anymore. Why would she? I was just the washed-up housewife bringing her husband coffee.

On my fourth visit, I brought Sterling's favorite sandwich—prosciutto and fig on sourdough. He was in a meeting with the CFO, a nervous man named David who'd always struck me as uncomfortable in his own skin. I waited in the small conference area outside Sterling's office, thumbing through a magazine without seeing the pages.

'Kennedy.' Sterling emerged from his office, checking his watch. 'David and I are finishing up. You can just leave the food. I'll get to it later.'

'Of course,' I said, rising to leave. 'I'll just use the restroom first.'

He nodded absently and returned to the conference room. I moved toward the executive bathroom, but instead of turning right, I turned left. The hallway curved around the building's core, and I knew from my visits that David often used the small office at the end to review quarterly projections. His door was ajar.

I paused outside, pretending to check my phone. Through the gap, I could see David's laptop open on his desk. He'd stepped away—probably to retrieve something from the printer. The screen faced outward, and I could see the spreadsheet displayed there. My eyes, trained over years of forensic auditing, caught the pattern immediately.

Offshore payments. Recurring transfers to shell companies in the Cayman Islands. The kind of careful money laundering that someone with a CPA but no real creativity would set up. Amateur work, but effective enough for most people.

I stepped into the doorway, my heart steady. 'David?' I called out, knowing he wasn't there. Then I pulled out my phone, angled it as if taking a selfie with the city skyline visible through the window, and snapped three quick photos of the laptop screen. The timestamp would show I was there for less than thirty seconds.

I was back in the hallway, walking toward the elevator, when David returned. He saw me and gave a startled little nod. 'Mrs. Nichols.'

'Hello, David. Sterling's in a meeting, but I left his lunch.' I smiled warmly, like the perfect supportive wife. 'Have a lovely day.'

That evening, I sat on the edge of our bed and pulled out my phone. There was a number I hadn't called in two years—a number I'd promised myself I wouldn't need. I stared at it for a long moment, then pressed send.

The text was brief: 'Archer. It's Kennedy Price. I have photographs I need you to look at.'

Four minutes later, my phone buzzed. 'Brooklyn. Thursday. I'll send the address.'

I deleted both messages and set the phone down. In the mirror across from the bed, I caught a glimpse of myself. I looked tired, but there was something else there too. Something that hadn't been there in three years.

Purpose.

Thursday came with gray skies and the kind of heavy air that promised rain. Archer's address led me to a nondescript building in Brooklyn Heights—the kind of place that housed a dozen small businesses and required a key fob to enter after hours. I was buzzed up to the third floor.

He was waiting in the hallway, arms crossed, leaning against the wall. Archer Woods looked exactly as I remembered and entirely different. Still tall, still quiet, but there was a new stillness to him—the kind that came from being entirely comfortable in his own skin.

'Kennedy,' he said, no question in his voice. He didn't ask why I'd disappeared from his life or why I'd suddenly reappeared. He simply opened the door to his office and gestured me inside.

I stepped in and immediately understood why Archer had become one of the most sought-after cybersecurity consultants in the country. The space was minimalist but for the wall of monitors and the equipment that lined one wall. This was a command center, not an office.

I pulled out my phone and slid it across his desk. 'These are the photos.'

Archer studied them for exactly ninety seconds, his eyes moving methodically across each image. Then he looked up at me. 'How deep do you want to go?'

I met his gaze and felt something cold and certain settle in my chest. 'All the way down.'

He nodded once, opened his laptop without another word, and began to type.
