Chapter 3

"The kids will know we share the consequences of this," I told the heavy bedroom door. "I won't let you tell them I handed this family to a judge."

My phone buzzed in my palm. The third remote wipe request failed. A red banner flashed across my screen.

Administrator account frozen for thirty days.

On the other side of the brass lock, Scott let out a curse. A heavy thud rattled the wood as he struck the frame with his fist. His footsteps retreated down the hall, fading into the carpet.

The next morning, the eight dirty place settings still sat in the kitchen sink. Dried tomato sauce clung to the porcelain.

Max stood by the island, his backpack slung over one shoulder. "Are Sunday dinners over forever?"

Scott poured black coffee into a travel mug. He wouldn't meet our son's eyes. "Things are just complicated right now, buddy."

"Don't do that," I said, stepping into the kitchen. "Give him a real answer."

Scott gripped the handle of his mug. "Hannah, not right now."

"Tell him," I pushed, keeping my voice level. "Tell him using one sentence. Do not mention Paige, and do not blame me."

Scott stared at the granite countertop. His jaw muscles flexed. "Mom needs space."

I walked over to Max and adjusted his backpack strap. "We both need honesty and space, Max. That means things will change."

Chloe walked in, catching the tail end of the exchange. She watched her father open his mouth to argue, then snap it shut. He looked at me, realizing I would no longer smooth over his rough edges. The silence stretched until the front door finally clicked shut behind the kids.

The doorbell rang twenty minutes later.

Ben stood on the porch, holding a sealed manila envelope and a silver flash drive. I let him in. He walked to the kitchen island and set the items down.

"The drive has my backup of the server," Ben said. "The envelope is something else."

I slid the paper out of the envelope. It was a Harbor House restaurant order form, dated ten months ago. Two columns of neat handwriting filled the back.

Reasons to stay. Reasons to leave.

"I wrote that before I found any texts," Ben said, staring at the paper. "I locked it in my desk. I never brought up separation with Paige."

I read the list. The first column mentioned the kids. The second column mentioned a dead bedroom and endless silence.

"I can't play the perfect, blindsided husband," Ben admitted, his voice dropping. "I keep wondering if I'm just using her betrayal as a convenient exit."

I placed the paper flat on the island. I did not offer him a comforting lie.

"Being unhappy explains a divorce," I told him. "It doesn't defend a secret plan to swap our lives behind our backs."

Ben nodded once, accepting the harsh truth. He pulled a pen from his pocket. "We need ground rules. If we are fighting them, we cannot fight each other."

"Separate lawyers," I said. "All evidence shared equally."

Ben wrote it down on the bottom of the order form. "The kids do not carry messages."

"No drinking together while the marriages are legally active," I added. "No physical contact."

Ben did not hesitate. He wrote down my boundaries, then added one of his own.

"If either of us feels too dependent on the other, we pause contact," he said, capping the pen.

My phone chimed on the counter. A massive block of text populated the neighborhood group chat. Paige's name sat at the top.

"Scott and I have just been supporting each other through difficult times," Paige wrote. "Hannah and Ben teamed up overnight to gather evidence against us. I just want peace for our children."

Three neighbors replied immediately, urging everyone to stay calm. Another neighbor canceled the block barbecue scheduled for Saturday. Silence from the rest of the group cemented Paige's narrative.

I did not upload the six hundred messages. I typed one reply.

"We will not debate child-related matters here. And we will not call a two-year secret a slip of the tongue."

A minute later, Ben's message appeared in the chat. He stated the same boundary, using different phrasing. We were aligned, but we had not copy-pasted a joint statement.

My screen switched to an incoming call. Mrs. Gable, the principal of the local private academy and a major client for Northlight Studio.

"Hannah," Mrs. Gable began, her tone clipped. "I saw the neighborhood chat. I need assurance that my students' portraits are stored on a secure server, separate from any domestic dispute evidence."

My stomach turned. Paige had weaponized my career in less than twelve hours.

"Your files are encrypted on a separate business drive, Mrs. Gable," I assured her. "Zero overlap."

I ended the call just as Scott walked into the kitchen. He pointed at my phone.

"Delete your reply," Scott demanded. "Apologize in the chat, say emotions ran high, and this stops."

"You want me to apologize for finding your texts?" I asked.

"I want you to stop burning down our social lives," he shot back. "Get on the video link. Paige and I have a proposal for the living arrangements."

I opened my laptop. Ben joined the call from his phone. Paige sat in her living room, her eyes red, dabbing her nose with a tissue.

Scott shared his screen, displaying a color-coded spreadsheet.

"It is called nesting," Scott explained, pointing to the grid. "The kids stay in their respective houses. The four of us rotate in and out. It provides maximum stability for them."

I looked at the assigned locations. The schedule put me on the sofa in my photography studio for four days a week. It placed Ben in the cramped back office of his restaurant. Scott and Paige, however, retained full weekend access to the primary houses.

"You two are the best at managing the mess," Paige offered through the speakers, her tone laced with artificial sympathy.
