Chapter 5

The email came on a Tuesday morning. Subject line: *Incident Review Required – January 14th Disciplinary Action.*

Sender: Natalie O'Brien, Union Representative.

I stared at it for a full minute before I opened it.

*Ms. Carlson—I've flagged the January 14th incident report as procedurally irregular. I need to speak with you regarding the circumstances. Please come to my office today at 2 p.m. This is not optional. —N. O'Brien*

My chest tightened. I read it again. *Procedurally irregular.* That meant someone had looked. Someone had noticed.

I closed the email. I went back to my spreadsheet. I didn't tell anyone.

At two p.m., I walked to the administrative wing. Natalie's office was at the end of the hall—small, windowless, stacked with binders and file boxes. She sat behind a metal desk with her reading glasses on, a mug of terrible office coffee steaming beside her keyboard.

She looked up when I knocked. 'Close the door.'

I did.

She gestured to the chair across from her. I sat.

Natalie pulled a file from the stack on her desk. She opened it. Inside, I saw a printed copy of the incident report from January 14th. Jett's signature at the bottom. Malayah's typed name listed as the supervising administrator.

'This,' Natalie said, tapping the page, 'is garbage.'

I didn't say anything.

She leaned back in her chair. 'You were three months postpartum. You were nursing. You were subjected to outdoor discipline in January rain for a fabricated dress-code violation while experiencing a documented medical condition.' She paused. 'That's not enforcement. That's retaliation.'

I swallowed. 'I didn't file a complaint.'

'I know. Margaret Yuen did.'

I blinked. Margaret. The woman who'd watched through the glass and said nothing.

Natalie saw my face. 'Guilt's a powerful thing,' she said. 'She came to me last week. Said she couldn't sleep. Said what happened to you wasn't right.' She closed the file. 'She's not wrong.'

I looked down at my hands. 'What do you want me to do?'

'I want you to stop thinking of this as a personal grievance,' Natalie said. Her voice was calm. Precise. 'If you pursue this as a domestic dispute or a workplace conflict, it dies in mediation. Jett gets a warning. Malayah gets a slap on the wrist. You get a settlement and a nondisclosure agreement. Everyone moves on.'

She leaned forward.

'But if you frame it as what it actually is—credential fraud, financial misconduct, and deliberate abuse of supervisory authority during a protected medical period—it becomes an institutional crisis the company cannot bury.'

I met her eyes. She didn't look away.

'Malayah Griffin is not Director Reynolds' niece,' Natalie said. 'I checked. Reynolds has one sibling. No nieces. No nephews. Someone lied to get her hired. Someone with access and authority.' She paused. 'That someone is your husband.'

My throat felt tight. I nodded.

Natalie folded her hands on the desk. 'Do you have documentation?'

'Yes.'

'How much?'

I pulled my phone from my pocket. I opened the folder. I showed her the list of files. Bank statements. Receipts. Emails. Love letters. Voice recording.

Natalie scrolled through the list. Her expression didn't change. When she finished, she handed the phone back.

'This is more than sufficient,' she said. 'This is a prosecutor's dream.'

I put the phone away. 'What do I do with it?'

Natalie picked up her coffee. She took a sip. She set it down.

'Jett's promotion banquet is in three weeks,' she said. 'Company leadership will be there. Director Reynolds. VP of Operations. HR. All in one room. All celebrating Jett's appointment to Assistant Director.'

She looked at me.

'Don't file this in a conference room where it can be managed quietly. Wait for the banquet. Wait until the room is full. Wait until Jett is at the podium accepting congratulations.' She paused. 'Then you stand up. You present the financial records. You play the audio recording. You let the room hear Jett's own voice admitting that Malayah Griffin is not who she claims to be.'

My hands were steady. 'They'll try to stop me.'

'They won't have time,' Natalie said. 'By the time anyone realizes what you're doing, it'll be done. And once it's public—once leadership hears that recording in front of fifty witnesses—they can't bury it. They'll have to investigate. They'll have to act.'

I thought about Jett standing in the rain. Watching me. His hand on Malayah's shoulder.

I thought about the receipts. The bank statements. The love letters tucked behind his winter coat.

I thought about the voice recording. *She's just the girl from that rub-and-tug place on Pike Street.*

'What documentation format does the investigation committee require?' I asked.

Natalie smiled. It was small. Sharp.

'Printed copies. Three sets. One for Reynolds. One for HR. One for the VP of Operations.' She pulled a notepad toward her and wrote something down. She tore off the page and handed it to me. 'Bind them. Label them. Include a table of contents. Make it look like a legal brief. Make it impossible to dismiss.'

I folded the page and put it in my pocket.

Natalie leaned back in her chair. 'One more thing. The audio recording—don't include it in the printed sets. Keep it on your phone. Play it live. Let them hear his voice in real time. It's harder to deny something when it's filling the room.'

I nodded.

She picked up her coffee again. 'You're going to walk into that banquet alone. You're going to stand in front of everyone you work with. And you're going to burn your husband's career to the ground.' She paused. 'Are you ready for that?'

I looked at her. I thought about the rain. The milk soaking through my shirt. The smirk on Malayah's face.

I thought about my baby. About the apartment I'd already started looking at. About the offer letter from Sterling Textile folded in my textbook at home.

'Yes,' I said.

Natalie nodded. 'Good. Then let's make sure you do it right.'

I stood. I walked to the door. I stopped with my hand on the handle.

'Thank you,' I said.

Natalie didn't look up from her computer. 'Don't thank me yet. Thank me when it's over.'

I walked back to my desk. I sat down. I opened my notebook.

I wrote the date at the top of a new page.

Then I wrote: *Three weeks.*
