Chapter 1

On Tuesday afternoon, my assistant Marcus walked into my office. He looked uneasy.

"Lola, I checked your desk and the safe," Marcus said. "I still can’t find the secondary card for your Fifth Avenue spa membership."

I didn’t look up from my laptop right away. "Did Drew take it?"

"Mr. Stephens said he didn't have it."

"All right. I’ll pull the digital statement."

I logged into the private client portal. The platinum membership had unlimited access, but every service was tracked. I scrolled down the page. Then I stopped.

The total balance spent over the last six months was $217,000.

Facials. Body wraps. Caviar creams. Full-day private suites. And every single charge had been signed off by the secondary user name: *Adelyn Crawford*.

My breath hitched. Adelyn was twenty-one years old. She was a girl from a small town in Ohio whom I had sponsored through NYU for three years. I paid her tuition, her rent in the East Village, and her books. I had treated her like a little sister.

Now she was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on my personal spa account.

I closed my laptop. I set my phone face-down on the desk.

I stood up and walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall of my corner office. Below me, lower Manhattan spread out in steel and gray concrete. Horns honked faintly from thirty floors down. I stood there, completely still, for nearly four minutes.

I didn’t yell. I didn’t call Drew. I didn’t call Adelyn.

Instead, I turned around and dialed our head of IT.

"Lola?" he answered.

"We’re doing a surprise security audit on all executive vehicles," I said. My voice was completely flat. "Drew’s SUV. I want the dashcam and the interior cabin cameras synced to my private cloud server. Full audio. Continuous recording. Start it today."

"Right away, Ms. Hamilton."

That evening, I was home by seven.

Our penthouse in Tribeca smelled like garlic and rosemary. I roasted chicken and set the dining table with our good linen. When Drew came through the door, he hung his coat and smiled his easy, boyish smile.

Seven years ago, Drew was an associate with no prospects. I fell in love with him, paid for his Columbia MBA, and gave him a senior director title at my firm. I gave him the world.

"Smells amazing, babe," he said. He kissed my cheek.

"Rough day?" I asked. I poured red wine into his glass.

"Just back-to-back meetings," Drew sighed, shaking his head. He pulled at his cufflink—a small habit he had whenever he lied. "The supply chain guys are driving me crazy. But I handled it. You know me."

"I do," I said softly.

I sat across from him. I watched the practiced rhythm of his smile. I watched how easily he swallowed his food and drank the wine I bought. He looked relaxed. He looked like an innocent husband who loved his wife.

Under the candlelight, the large diamond on my left hand caught the glow. It sparkled brightly. My finger felt heavy.

I didn't take the ring off.

Three days later, it was midnight.

I was alone in my office. The cleaning crew had already left. The only light came from my computer screen.

A notification popped up: *Fleet Sync: New Interior Recording Available.*

I clicked the link. The video loaded in high definition.

It was the back seat of Drew’s company SUV. The car was parked in a dimly lit lot. Rain drummed against the roof.

Drew was there, his shirt unbuttoned. And in his lap was Adelyn Crawford.

She wasn't wearing her usual college hoodies. She was wearing my fifteen-thousand-dollar red Valentino silk gown. The zipper in the back was strained. In Drew’s right hand, he gripped a short black leather riding crop.

He tapped it lightly against her thigh.

Adelyn threw her head back and let out a soft moan. "Drew... tell me again," she whispered into his neck. "Tell me I'm the real Mrs. Stephens."

Drew let out a harsh, mocking laugh. It was a sound I had never heard come out of his mouth before.

"You're the only Mrs. Stephens I want," Drew said, leaning down to bite her collarbone. "Lola’s just a frigid corporate bitch. She works twelve hours a day because she can't keep a man in bed."

Adelyn giggled. She stroked his chest. "She thinks she’s so smart. She actually believes I look up to her."

"She’s an idiot," Drew grunted.

I stared at the screen.

My hands began to shake. A cold rush of nausea rose in my throat. The room felt completely airless. I looked down at my trembling fingers on the black desk.

*One. Two. Three.*

I counted silently. I let the shock wash through my blood.

At thirty seconds, my hands stopped shaking. The trembling was gone. A strange, icy calm settled over my chest.

I paused the video. I saved three backup copies to an encrypted hard drive. Then I opened a blank document and titled it: *Stephens, Drew – Termination & Asset Recovery.*

I checked the clock on the wall. It was 1:00 a.m.

I picked up my phone and called Claire Novak, my lead corporate attorney. It rang twice before she answered, her voice groggy.

"Lola? Is everything okay?"

"Claire," I said quietly. "Be in my conference room tomorrow morning at six."

Claire hesitated. She instantly recognized my tone. "What happened?"

"I need an audit of every single corporate account Drew has touched over the last three years," I said. "Every expense report. Every client gift. Every vendor transfer."

"Lola, if this is a divorce—"

"It's not just a divorce," I cut in. My voice was smooth, like cold glass. "I want a full legal framework. Every piece of evidence we touch from this moment forward must be bulletproof for both civil and criminal court. We are going to destroy him."
