Chapter 2

Dawn broke over the East River in cold streaks of gray.

Claire Novak walked into my conference room at six sharp. She carried a leather briefcase and a cup of black coffee. She looked tired, but her eyes were sharp.

"Show me," Claire said, sitting across from me.

I turned my laptop around. I slid a printed folder across the polished table.

First, she looked at the spa records. Her eyebrows shot up.

"Two hundred and seventeen thousand dollars?" she whispered. "On massages and body wraps? Under Adelyn Crawford’s name?"

"Keep looking," I said.

I hit play on the dashcam clip.

The screen flickered. The audio came through crisp and clear. Drew’s rough voice. The sharp slap of the riding crop. The mocking laughter. Adelyn purred in my red silk dress, calling me a frigid corporate bitch.

Claire’s face went pale. She stared at the screen, then slowly pushed her glasses up her nose.

"Lola," she breathed. "I am so sorry."

"Don't be sorry," I said evenly. "Tell me the legal reality."

Claire cleared her throat and switched instantly into lawyer mode. "Under New York Penal Law, using another person's account to steal over a hundred thousand dollars is grand larceny in the first degree. Add in the identity fraud, and she is looking at up to fifteen years in state prison."

"And the footage?"

"The SUV is registered to your company," Claire said. "The fleet agreement gives the company explicit rights to monitor cabin cameras. It is one hundred percent admissible in both civil and criminal court."

"Good," I said. "Prepare a full fraud dossier on Adelyn. Keep it ready to print. And pull our prenuptial agreement from seven years ago."

"The infidelity clause?" Claire asked.

"Draft the enforcement memo," I told her. "If Drew breaches it, he walks away with nothing. Not a penny. Not a single share."

At eight, Marcus showed Raymond Holt into my office.

Holt was a former FBI investigator. He was in his fifties, with silver hair and a quiet, watchful face. He didn't ask personal questions. He just listened.

I handed him a thin tablet.

"This is Drew's daily schedule," I said. "And these are the GPS coordinates his car visits three nights a week. A dark corner of a construction site in Brooklyn."

Holt jotted down a note in a small leather pad. "You think he meets her there?"

"I know he does," I answered. "Claire’s team is running a forensic audit on his corporate spending. I want you to dig deeper. Check his personal devices. Follow every wire transfer, every offshore account, every encrypted email. If he's meeting people after hours, I want photos and names."

Holt nodded slowly. "How far do you want me to go, Ms. Hamilton?"

"To the bottom," I said. "Leave no stone unturned."

"Understood." He closed his notepad and stood up. "I'll be in touch."

The next morning, I made fresh coffee at the penthouse.

Drew walked into the kitchen wearing his tailored gray suit. He smiled and reached for a mug.

"Morning, beautiful," he said.

"Morning," I replied, handing him a plate of toast. "I have some bad news about next week."

Drew paused, mug halfway to his lips. "What happened?"

"The London acquisition," I sighed, rubbing my temples like I had a headache. "The board needs me there in person. I have to fly out tonight."

"Tonight?" Drew blinked. He tried to look disappointed, but I caught the slight twitch in his jaw. "For how long?"

"Ten days," I said. "I won't be back until next Friday evening. Right on our seventh anniversary."

Drew set his cup down. His fingers nervously smoothed his gold cufflink—his classic tell whenever he lied.

"Ten days is a long time, babe," he said softly. He stepped close and put his arms around my waist. "Our anniversary is important. Can't someone else go?"

"It has to be me," I said. I looked up into his eyes. "I'm sorry, Drew. I know you wanted a quiet week together."

"Hey, it's fine," he said quickly, brushing a strand of hair from my cheek. "Duty calls. I'll hold down the fort here. When you get back on Friday, I'll have a massive surprise waiting for you."

"I'm sure you will," I whispered.

At the front door, he kissed my cheek with tender, practiced care. Behind his eyes, I could practically see the gears turning. He was already calculating ten days of absolute freedom.

A black town car waited downstairs.

The driver loaded my luggage into the trunk and pulled out into the Manhattan morning.

"JFK, Ms. Hamilton?" the driver asked.

"Take the FDR north," I said quietly, leaning back against the leather seat. "Then cross into Midtown. Drop me off at The Plaza."

I wasn't going to London.

I checked into a corner suite on the ninth floor under the name Catherine Vance.

From my suite window, I looked out over Central Park. The trees were bare against the cold gray sky.

I opened my phone and tapped the fleet GPS tracker.

Drew's car icon was already moving.

I took a slow breath and watched the blue dot crawl across the map.

The countdown had begun.
