Chapter 2

Kamari arrived at eleven in the morning. I heard her voice before I saw her—bright, performative, echoing through the foyer like she was narrating for an audience that wasn't there.

"Oh my God, Bradley, this light is perfect. We should do the photoshoot here."

I was in the kitchen with Wren. Tuesday morning. Snack routine. Apple slices—cooked, cut into triangles, arranged on the blue plate. The blue plate mattered. Everything mattered.

I heard Bradley's low murmur. Then footsteps.

Kamari appeared in the doorway first. White silk blouse. High-waisted jeans that looked like they cost more than our grocery budget. Hair in that effortless wave that actually takes an hour. She scanned the kitchen the way people scan hotel rooms—assessing, cataloging, deciding what to keep.

Her gaze landed on the shelf by the window. My grandmother's ceramic bowl. She crossed the room, picked it up, turned it over in her hands like she was appraising it, then set it down six inches to the left.

"Hi," I said.

She looked at me. Smiled. "You must be Elina."

Not *nice to meet you*. Not *I've heard so much*. Just a statement. Confirmation of my existence.

"I am," I said.

Bradley appeared behind her, hands in his pockets. "Kamari's helping me with some publicity photos. For the new book. We'll be in the study."

"Sure," I said.

Kamari's eyes drifted to Wren, who sat at the table with her blue plate, humming softly. The hum was a good sign. It meant she was calm.

"She's so quiet," Kamari said. "How old?"

"Six."

"Cute."

She picked up the raw apple from the counter—the one I hadn't cut yet, the one that was never for Wren—and walked toward the table.

"Here, sweetie," she said brightly. "Want a snack?"

I moved fast. "She doesn't eat—"

But Kamari was already holding it out, pushing it toward Wren's face. Wren recoiled. Pressed back into her chair. The humming stopped.

"Kamari," I said quietly. "She can't have that."

Kamari glanced back at me. "It's just an apple."

"She has sensory issues. Raw textures—"

"Oh, come on." Kamari laughed. Looked at Bradley. "Kids need to try new things, right? She's just being picky."

Bradley said nothing.

Kamari placed the apple directly into Wren's hand.

Wren's reaction was instant. She flung the apple across the room. Both hands clamped over her ears. Her body started rocking—forward, back, forward, back—slamming against the chair with a force that made the legs scrape the floor.

Then the sound started. High. Thin. Building.

"Jesus," Kamari said, stepping back.

I dropped to my knees beside Wren. Wrapped my arms around her from behind, absorbing the rocking, letting her push against me instead of the chair. "It's okay, baby. It's okay. I'm here."

The keening turned into screaming.

I pressed my cheek to the top of her head. Kept my voice low and steady. "You're safe. You're safe. I've got you."

Bradley stood in the doorway. Arms crossed. Jaw tight. He wasn't looking at Wren. He was looking at Kamari, his face registering something between embarrassment and irritation.

Not concern. Not fear. Not love.

Inconvenience.

Kamari touched his arm. "Maybe we should go to your place instead."

"Yeah," Bradley said quietly. "Probably better."

Wren's screaming softened into gasping sobs. Her hands loosened from her ears. I kept holding her, rocking gently, whispering the same words over and over. "You're safe. I'm here. You're safe."

It took five more minutes before she went limp against me. Breathing hard. Exhausted.

I stood slowly, lifting her with me. She wrapped her legs around my waist and buried her face in my neck.

I turned to face Bradley.

He was still standing there. Hands in his pockets now. Waiting for this to be over so he could leave.

I looked at him—really looked at him—and something inside me that had been bending for seven years finally snapped clean.

I crossed the kitchen. Wren still in my arms.

I stopped in front of him.

Then I slapped him.

Hard.

The crack of it filled the room. His head turned with the force. His hand flew to his cheek.

Kamari gasped.

Bradley stared at me. Eyes wide. Like he'd never seen me before.

Maybe he hadn't.

"Get her out of my house," I said.

My voice didn't shake. It was flat. Surgical.

"Elina—"

"Get her out," I said again. "And find yourself a lawyer."

I turned and walked out of the kitchen. Carried Wren upstairs. Closed the bedroom door behind us.

I sat on the floor with her in my lap until her breathing evened out. Until the trembling stopped.

Downstairs, I heard the front door open. Close.

Silence.

I pulled out my phone. Opened my contacts. Scrolled to a name I hadn't called in seven years.

Rhett Hamilton.

I stared at it for a long time.

Then I pressed call.
