Chapter 3

Wren's skin was too hot. I pressed my hand to her forehead and felt the heat radiating through her. The thermometer read 103.8. Then 104.1.

Two in the morning. The brownstone silent except for Wren's shallow breathing.

I'd given her acetaminophen an hour ago. The fever wasn't breaking. Her cheeks were flushed dark red. Her eyes had that glassy look I'd seen in pediatric patients during residency—the look that meant something was escalating.

I checked her throat with my phone flashlight. Red. Swollen. Possibly strep. Possibly worse.

I needed a second opinion. I needed someone who could get antibiotics at three in the morning if we needed them. I needed her father.

I dialed Bradley.

It rang once. Twice.

Then silence. Not voicemail. The deliberate cut-off of a rejected call.

I stared at the screen. Tried again.

Same thing.

Wren whimpered. I set the phone down and pressed a cool cloth to her neck. Counted her breaths. Watched the rise and fall of her chest.

Forty minutes later, my phone buzzed.

A text. From Bradley.

*She's fine. You're overreacting.*

I read it three times.

Then I looked at Wren. Her small body curled on my lap. Her hand gripping my shirt. Her fever climbing.

I thought about the Instagram post. The stolen vows. The bank transfers. The hotel receipts.

I thought about Kamari holding out that apple. Bradley standing in the doorway with his hands in his pockets.

I thought about seven years of invisible labor. Seven years of believing that if I just gave enough, it would matter.

It didn't matter.

It had never mattered.

I picked up my phone. Scrolled through my contacts. Found the name I'd saved seven years ago and never deleted.

Rhett Hamilton.

My finger hovered over the call button.

I hadn't spoken to him since I left Columbia. Since I walked away from rounds and research and the operating room. Since I chose Bradley and Wren and the life I thought I was supposed to want.

Rhett had been my attending. My mentor. The surgeon who'd let me scrub in on my first CABG and didn't take over when my hands shook. The one who'd said, quietly, after I told him I was leaving: "The door stays open. Always."

I pressed call.

It rang once.

He answered.

"Elina."

His voice was the same. Low. Steady. No sleep-blur. Like he'd been awake.

"I need help," I said. "I'm leaving him."

Silence. Not hesitation. Just space.

"Tell me the address," he said. "I'll be there in twenty minutes."

No questions. No explanations required.

"You don't have to—"

"Address, Elina."

I gave it to him.

"Eighteen minutes," he said. Then hung up.

I sat on the floor with Wren in my lap. Checked her temperature again. 103.9. Holding steady. Not climbing. I let myself breathe.

Seventeen minutes later, headlights swept across the living room window.

I stood. Wrapped Wren in her blanket. She stirred but didn't wake.

I opened the front door.

Rhett stood on the stoop. Black coat. Dark jeans. A paper coffee cup in one hand. His face exactly as I remembered it—sharp jaw, dark eyes, the kind of steady calm that made residents stop panicking in the OR.

He looked at me. Then at Wren.

"Fever?" he asked quietly.

"104 an hour ago. Holding at 103 now."

He nodded. Stepped inside. Set the coffee cup on the hall table. Held out his arms.

I hesitated.

"Let me take her," he said. "You need your hands free."

I passed Wren to him. He adjusted his grip immediately—one hand supporting her head, the other under her knees, careful not to touch her wrists. He'd noticed. Without being told.

Footsteps on the stairs.

Bradley appeared. Hair messed. T-shirt wrinkled. He'd been home less than an hour.

He looked at me. Then at Rhett.

Recognition hit him like cold water.

"Rhett Hamilton," Bradley said slowly.

Rhett didn't look at him. He was watching Wren. Adjusting the blanket around her shoulders.

"You're leaving," Bradley said. Not a question. A statement trying to become a question.

"Yes," I said.

I walked past him. Grabbed the two suitcases I'd packed while Wren slept. Everything else could wait.

Bradley followed me to the door. "Elina. Wait. Just—let's talk about this."

I stopped. Turned.

He was looking at Rhett. Not at me. At Rhett. At the man holding our daughter. At the surgeon whose name appeared in *The New York Times* and medical journals and hospital donor wings.

Bradley's face was doing something I'd never seen before. Crumbling. Recalculating.

"This is what you're doing?" Bradley said quietly. "Running to him?"

"No," I said. "I'm running from you."

I walked down the front steps. Rhett followed. He opened the back door of his car and settled Wren into the car seat—one I hadn't asked him to bring, but he had.

I put the suitcases in the trunk.

Bradley stood in the doorway. Watching.

I got in the passenger seat. Closed the door.

Rhett slid into the driver's seat. Started the engine.

I didn't look back.

The brownstone disappeared behind us.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"My place," Rhett said. "Guest room's ready. I'll check her when we get there. If she needs antibiotics, I'll make a call."

I nodded. Pressed my forehead against the cool window.

"Thank you," I whispered.

He glanced at me. Just once. Then back at the road.

"You don't thank someone for showing up," he said quietly. "That's just what you do."

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in seven years, I let someone else drive.
