Chapter 1

I got to Café Marcello three minutes early. Old habit. Seven years of marriage and I still showed up to everything the way I used to show up to rounds—early enough to settle my hands, check my surroundings, be ready.

The hostess smiled when she saw me. "Mrs. Simpson! Your table's ready."

I followed her to the corner booth. Candlelight. White tablecloth. Two menus. I set the wrapped package on Bradley's side—first-edition Hemingway, the one he'd mentioned once two years ago. I'd been hunting it for months.

The reservation was for seven. By seven-fifteen, his seat was still empty.

I checked my phone. No messages.

The waiter came by twice. I ordered water. He brought bread. I didn't touch it.

At seven-thirty, I opened Instagram.

I don't know why. Maybe I was looking for a distraction. Maybe some part of me already knew.

The first post on my feed was trending. Forty-seven thousand likes. I recognized the linen suit before I recognized his face.

Bradley stood beneath a vine-covered arch, holding the hands of a woman in a white dress. Not me. Her. Kamari Romero. The writing student. The one who'd been coming to the house for "workshops" since spring.

Behind them, rows of white chairs faced a valley view. Wildflowers in mason jars lined the aisle—lavender, baby's breath, those small yellow ones I could never remember the name of. The same flowers I'd described to Bradley three years ago when he asked what my dream wedding would look like.

I'd told him late one night in bed. Napa Valley. A small vineyard. Handwritten vows. Wildflowers, not roses. Something quiet. Something ours.

The caption read: *"Said yes to forever with my muse. 🤍 #OneLastVow."*

I stared at the screen until the candle on the table blurred.

The waiter returned. "Ready to order?"

"No," I said quietly. "Just the check."

I paid. Left the Hemingway on the table. Walked out into November cold without a coat.

The brownstone was dark when I got home. I didn't turn on the lights. I sat in the kitchen and waited.

Bradley came back the next morning. Ten-fifteen. He walked in smiling, keys jingling, coffee in hand.

"Hey, babe. Sorry about last night. Marcus pulled me into this industry thing at the last minute. Total chaos. You know how he is."

I looked at him. He was wearing the same linen suit from the photo.

"It's fine," I said.

He kissed the top of my head and went upstairs.

I pulled out my notebook. The leather one from residency. I hadn't used it in seven years, but it was still in my bag. I opened to a blank page and wrote the date.

Then I started collecting.

Bradley kept his laptop in the study. Password: my birthday. I'd set it up for him years ago and he'd never changed it. I logged into his bank account—joint access, something I'd never thought to use before.

The transfers went back months. Kamari Romero. Rent payments to a SoHo address. Purchases at Bergdorf, at Cartier. A venue deposit: *Meadowlark Vineyards, Napa Valley. $12,000.*

I screenshotted everything. Saved them to a cloud folder he didn't know I had.

That night, I went through his jacket pockets while he was in the shower. Hotel receipts. The Greenwich, twice in September. The Ludlow, three times in October. I photographed each one with my phone, hands steady.

His iPad was on the nightstand. He never locked it. I opened his messages.

The thread with Kamari went back fourteen months. Photos. Voice notes. Texts that made my stomach twist.

*"Can't wait to wake up next to you every morning."*

*"She doesn't understand me the way you do."*

*"You're the only one who sees the real me."*

I scrolled back further. Found the one that made my hands stop.

*"Used that thing Elina told me about the vows. Worked perfectly. You're going to love it."*

I closed the iPad. Set it back exactly where it had been.

The next day, I went into Bradley's study while he was out. His manuscript notes were spread across the desk. A dog-eared copy of *One Last Vow* sat open to chapter seven.

I read the passage. Then I read it again.

It was mine.

Word for word. The letter I'd written him during our first year together. The one where I'd told him what love meant to me. What I wanted to build with him. The exact phrasing. The exact metaphors.

I flipped through the book. Found another passage. Another letter. Then another.

The bestselling novel that had made Bradley Simpson a name in literary fiction—the one that had earned him a six-figure advance and a profile in *The New Yorker*—was built from pieces of me. My words. My dreams. My voice, rearranged and sold under his name.

I closed the book carefully. Put it back exactly where it had been.

Then I went upstairs, pulled the notebook from my bag, and added one more line:

*Novel—stolen. Every word.*

I didn't cry. My hands didn't shake.

I had seven years of surgical training. I knew how to stay calm when everything was falling apart.

I knew how to cut clean.
