Chapter 3

The flowers arrived at ten in the morning. White roses. Two dozen. The nurse brought them in and set them on the table by the window. The card was cream-colored. Thick paper. Embossed with the Shaw family crest.

I didn't open it.

Kathryn Shaw arrived an hour later. She wore a gray suit. Pearls. Her hair was pulled back in a smooth chignon. She looked at the roses. Adjusted one stem. Then another. Her movements were precise. Practiced.

"They're lovely," she said.

I watched her from the bed. My hand was bandaged. Thick white gauze wrapped around my palm. The stitches underneath pulled when I moved my fingers.

Kathryn turned to face me. Her expression was pleasant. Neutral. "How are you feeling?"

"Did you know?"

She blinked. "Know what, dear?"

"About Ryker. That he could walk. About Carmen. The children. The cord blood."

She reached for the roses again. Turned the vase slightly. "I knew what was necessary."

The words hung in the air. Clean. Final.

"Necessary," I repeated.

"Your parents saved Harold's life. We honored that debt. You've been provided for. Protected. And now you're fulfilling your part of the arrangement." She smoothed her skirt. "It's all very straightforward."

I stared at her. This woman who had sent me flowers every month for five years. Who had smiled at me across dinner tables. Who had called me "dear" and "darling" and never once said my name.

"You knew from the beginning."

"I knew what needed to be done." She picked up her purse. "The delivery is scheduled for next week. Thirty-two weeks is perfectly safe. The doctors assure me the cord blood will be viable. After that, you'll be free to go wherever you like. Ryker has been very generous in the settlement."

She walked to the door. Paused. Looked back at me.

"The roses are from my personal garden," she said. "I cut them myself this morning."

The door closed. The lock clicked. I looked at the flowers. White petals. Perfect. Bloodless.

I turned my face to the wall.

Carmen came back three days later. White linen dress this time. White sandals. She carried a leather folder.

"I brought pictures," she said.

She sat in the chair by the bed. Opened the folder. Pulled out photographs. Glossy. Professional. She held up the first one. A house. Brick and ivy. Windows glowing warm in twilight.

"This is home," she said. "Kensington. Four bedrooms. There's a garden in the back. Ryker built a treehouse for Marcus last summer."

She set it down. Picked up another. Ryker on a sofa. A child on each knee. He was reading to them. His face was soft. Unguarded. I'd never seen that face.

"This was last month," Carmen said. "Elena's favorite book is about a princess who saves herself. Ryker reads it to her every night. He does all the voices."

Another photograph. A nursery. Pale blue walls. A crib. A mobile with wooden animals. Stars painted on the ceiling.

"For the baby," Carmen said. "Ryker picked out everything. He spent hours choosing the right shade of blue. He said it had to be calming. Peaceful." She looked at me. "He wants this child so much. He talks about him constantly. Our miracle baby. The one who will save Marcus."

I said nothing. My thumb pressed into my palm. The stitches pulled.

Carmen leaned forward. Her voice dropped. Intimate. Confiding. "He whispers my name when he sleeps. Did you know that? Carmen. Over and over. Like a prayer." She paused. "Has he ever said your name? Even once?"

I looked at her. Her perfect face. Her cold eyes.

"You're terrified," I said quietly.

Her smile faltered.

"You come here every few days. You bring pictures. You tell me stories. You need me to know what you have. Because if I don't know—if I don't care—then it doesn't mean anything."

Carmen stood. The photographs scattered across the bed. "You're nothing. You understand that? Nothing. When this is over, you'll disappear. And we'll forget you ever existed."

She walked out. The door locked.

I gathered the photographs. Looked at each one. Ryker's face. The children. The house. The life. Then I set them on the table. Turned away.

That night I couldn't sleep. The baby moved constantly. Restless. I lay in the dark and listened to the monitors beep. Steady. Mechanical. Counting down.

I reached under my pillow. Pulled out the photograph. My parents. Vienna. My mother's hand on my father's shoulder. Both of them smiling. I'd kept this picture folded inside every book I'd read for eight years. Moved it from novel to novel. The edges were soft now. Worn.

I pressed my thumb into my palm. Felt the stitches. The pain was sharp. Clean. Real.

I tried to remember what it felt like to be loved without conditions. Without transactions. Without needing to be useful first.

I couldn't remember.

I turned the photograph over. Looked at the blank back. My mother's handwriting. A date. A place. Proof that I had once belonged to someone. That I had once been chosen. Not for what I could provide. Just for being.

I held the photograph against my chest. The baby kicked. Hard. Like he was trying to tell me something.

I closed my eyes. Made myself a promise I couldn't say out loud yet.

I would survive this.

And when I did, I would never kneel again.
