Chapter 4

Ryker came on Thursday. I heard his footsteps in the hall before the door opened. Measured. Even. The walk of a man who had never needed a wheelchair.

He stepped inside. Looked at the monitors. The IV. The untouched breakfast tray. Not at me.

"Thirty-one weeks now," he said. "The doctors are pleased with the progress."

I sat against the pillows. My bandaged hand rested on top of the blanket. The gauze was clean. White. The nurse had changed it this morning.

Ryker moved to the bedside table. Straightened the water pitcher. Aligned it with the edge. Then the tissue box. Then the call button. His fingers were precise. Careful. Like arranging chess pieces.

"Your vitals are stable," he continued. "Blood pressure is good. The baby's heart rate is strong. Everything is on schedule."

I watched his hands. The way they moved. Adjusting. Correcting. Making order.

"Next week we'll do the final ultrasound. Confirm position. Then we'll schedule the delivery. Probably Wednesday or Thursday. The cord blood team will be ready."

He picked up the empty water glass. Set it down in exactly the same spot. Picked it up again. Rotated it forty-five degrees.

"You'll be under general anesthesia. You won't feel anything. When you wake up, it will all be over. Clean. Simple."

The baby kicked. Hard. Against my ribs. I didn't flinch.

Ryker finally looked at me. His eyes moved across my face. Clinical. Assessing. Checking boxes on an internal list. Then down to my hand.

"How's the hand healing?"

"Fine."

He nodded. Looked away. "Good. That's good."

Silence. The monitors beeped. Steady. Mechanical.

"Carmen and the children went back to London yesterday," he said. "She wanted to prepare the house. For when Marcus gets the treatment. She's very organized. She's already set up the recovery room. Hired the nursing staff. She thinks of everything."

I pressed my thumb into my palm. Under the bandage. The stitches pulled.

Ryker straightened the water pitcher again. "This will all be worth it. You'll see. When Marcus is healthy. When he can run and play like other children. When Carmen doesn't have to wake up every night terrified he'll stop breathing." His voice softened. "You're giving them that. You should feel proud."

I looked at him. This stranger. This man I had loved.

"Do you ever say my name?" I asked.

He blinked. "What?"

"My name. Do you ever say it? When you're not in this room. When you're in London. When you're with her. Do you ever say Sofia?"

He stared at me. Confused. Like I'd asked him something in a foreign language.

"I don't understand the question."

"I know."

He waited. I said nothing else. After a long moment, he checked his watch. "I have a call in ten minutes. I'll check in tomorrow."

He walked to the door. Stopped. Looked back.

"Everything you need will be provided," he said. "After this is done. Financial security. A new start. Wherever you want to go. I've made sure of it."

The door closed. The lock clicked.

I looked at the water pitcher. Perfectly aligned. The tissue box. The call button. All in their proper places.

I turned my face to the wall.

---

Three hundred miles away, Leland Shaw sat in a conference room with no windows. The table was steel. The walls were soundproofed. Marcus Chen stood at the head, a tablet in his hand.

"Final verification came through this morning," Marcus said. He swiped the screen. A document appeared on the wall display. Lab results. Official letterhead. Mount Sinai Hospital. "Complete blood panel. Genetic screening. Metabolic function. All normal. No abnormalities. No disease markers."

He swiped again. Another document. Johns Hopkins. Same results.

Again. Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. Same results.

"Three independent hospitals," Marcus continued. "Six different physicians. Two years of testing. The boy is perfectly healthy. There is no blood disorder. There never was."

Leland leaned forward. His hands were folded on the table. His face was still.

"The oncologist?" he asked.

"Dr. Richard Pemberton. Pediatric hematology. He was bribed. Two hundred thousand pounds deposited into an offshore account eighteen months ago. We have the wire transfer records. He never examined the child. He just signed the forms Carmen provided."

"The hospital records?"

"Forged. Professional work. But forged. We had a document examiner verify. The paper stock doesn't match. The digital signatures are fabricated."

Leland was quiet. He looked at the wall of evidence. Years of lies. Stacked. Documented. Irrefutable.

"She built an entire architecture," he said softly.

"Yes."

"And Ryker never questioned it."

"He never looked. He believed her completely."

Leland stood. Walked to the window. The city stretched below. Cold. Bright. Indifferent.

"The surgical team?" he asked.

"On standby. Dr. Helen Voss. Best in the country. Her team is ready to move on two hours' notice."

"The hospital?"

"Mount Sinai has a suite reserved under a shell corporation. Security is briefed. They know to expect resistance from Shaw family personnel."

Leland turned. Looked at Marcus.

"When they move her to the operating table," he said, "we move."

Marcus nodded. "Understood."

Leland picked up the folder. Two years of work. Two years of watching. Waiting. Building the case that would tear down everything Ryker had constructed.

He thought of Sofia. Locked in a medical suite. Bleeding. Alone. Carrying a child that would be sacrificed the moment it was born.

For a lie.

For nothing.

"How long?" he asked.

Marcus checked his tablet. "They're scheduled to induce labor in six days. Wednesday morning. Eight a.m."

Leland set down the folder. His jaw was tight.

"Then we have six days."

He walked to the door. Stopped. Looked back at the wall of evidence.

"Make sure Dr. Voss understands," he said quietly. "Sofia Lane is the priority. Not the cord blood. Not the Shaw family's agenda. Her. Only her."

"She understands."

Leland nodded. Opened the door.

And walked out into the cold bright city to wait.
