Chapter 3

I found it on Wednesday.

Not because anyone asked me to look. I was routing a standard freight analysis—getting a feel for the company's current infrastructure—and something snagged in my brain the way a loose thread snags on a nail. A small thing. A pattern in the Pacific Northwest hub assignments that didn't sit right.

I pulled the last two years of data that night.

By Thursday morning, I had four pages of notes and a number that made me set my coffee down.

Millions. Annually. A routing inefficiency so deeply embedded in the system that it had become invisible. Not because it was complicated. Because everyone had stopped questioning it.

I booked Conference Room B—the one Marcus warned me about, so I brought a cardigan—for two o'clock.

The room filled up with people who had been at this company longer than I'd been back in the industry. Senior coordinators. A regional director. Two analysts who looked at me the way people look at someone they're still deciding whether to take seriously.

I didn't use a presentation deck. I used the whiteboard and my notebook.

I drew the current routing structure first. Then I drew what it should look like. Then I put the number on the board—the actual annual loss, broken down by quarter—and I stepped back.

The room went quiet.

Not the polite quiet of people waiting for you to finish. The other kind. The kind where everyone is doing math in their heads and arriving at the same answer and not quite ready to say it out loud.

The regional director—a man named Paulson who had barely looked up when I walked in—was staring at the whiteboard with his pen halfway to his notepad, frozen.

"This has been running for two years?" he said.

"Twenty-six months," I said. "The original reroute was a short-term fix after the port delays in October two years ago. Nobody flagged it for review after the delays resolved."

Silence.

"Nobody," one of the analysts said. It wasn't an accusation. It was just the word landing.

"It's not obvious if you're not looking for it," I said. "I was looking for it."

I didn't say: *I've been looking for things like this my whole life. I just spent three years looking at grocery lists and medication schedules instead.*

I didn't say anything else. I let the whiteboard do the work.

Kingston was standing at the back of the room. I'd clocked him when he came in, ten minutes into my presentation, quiet enough that only I seemed to notice. He hadn't sat down. He was leaning against the back wall with his arms crossed and his eyes on the board.

When I glanced at him, he was smiling. Not the professional kind. The real kind. Small, controlled, but there.

He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.

Paulson asked me to walk them through the proposed restructure. I did. It took forty minutes. By the end, the two analysts were taking notes without being asked.

I walked back to my desk afterward and sat down and looked out the east-facing window at the gray Seattle sky and felt something move through my chest that I hadn't felt in a long time.

Not pride, exactly. Something quieter. Like a door opening in a room I'd sealed off and forgotten.

The chai latte was on my desk when I got there. It was always on my desk. Every morning, exactly the right temperature, from the café three blocks away—the one I'd mentioned to no one, that I'd stopped at twice in my first week out of habit.

I picked it up. Held it.

The first time it appeared, I'd assumed it was a welcome gesture. Standard. The second time, I'd told myself the same thing. By the fifth morning, I had stopped explaining it to myself and started just noting it.

Like the notebooks. The exact brand, stacked neatly in my desk drawer on day one. Like the building lights—I'd worked past eight every night this week, and every night the eleventh floor stayed lit. Kingston's office at the far end, the blinds half-drawn, a shadow moving occasionally behind the glass.

He never came to my desk. Never knocked. Never made it a thing.

He was just there.

I tapped my index finger against my thumb. Once. Twice. Three times.

Then I stopped.

I opened my notebook to a fresh page and started sketching the revised routing diagram. Clean lines. No wasted movement. Every node connected to exactly where it needed to go.

Outside, the sky was doing that thing Seattle skies do in December—not quite raining, just heavy and gray and close, like the city was holding its breath.

I kept drawing.

Down the hall, I could hear Marcus on a call, his voice low and efficient. The printer by the east wall jammed. Someone swore quietly. Normal sounds. Ordinary sounds.

I hadn't heard ordinary in a long time.

I picked up the chai latte again. Took a slow sip.

It was exactly the right temperature.

I didn't let myself think about that too long. But I noticed it. The way I noticed everything.

I filed it. And I kept working.
