Chapter 4

The conference room on the fourteenth floor had a view of the Sound, gray and flat under a sky that couldn't decide if it wanted to rain. I didn't look at it. I was looking at the papers spread across the table, my whole marriage reduced to exhibits with tab numbers.

Victor Hale sat across from me. Gray suit, gray tie, the kind of stillness that made you forget he was billing by the hour. Kingston had picked him personally. He told me that once, flat, like it was a fact about the weather. Crossed two names off the list himself. Didn't say why.

"Exhibit A," Victor said, sliding a folder toward me. "The divorce decree. Filed and notarized three years ago. Your signature, obtained under the pretense of refinancing documents." He didn't wait for me to react. He kept going, the way I would have. "Exhibit B. Bank statements showing systematic withdrawals from your personal savings account over eighteen months. Exhibit C. Purchase records tracing those withdrawals to gifts for Ms. Gutierrez."

He laid it all out like a supply chain. Cause, effect, cause, effect. I respected that.

"Three years of unpaid caregiving," he said. "Documented medical schedules, prescription logs, your own handwriting. We can quantify that too. Fair market value for full-time home health care in King County isn't small."

"How small isn't small," I said.

He told me the number. I didn't blink, but something in my chest went very quiet, the way a machine goes quiet right before it starts.

"With the asset transfers and the fraud claim combined," Victor said, "I'd estimate a judgment that recovers everything he took. Possibly more, once punitive damages are on the table."

Kingston stood by the window. He hadn't sat down since we started. His arms were crossed, his face unreadable in the way that meant he was listening harder than anyone else in the room.

"So we file," Victor said. He reached for his pen like it was already decided.

"No," I said. "Not yet."

Victor stopped. Looked up.

"Elina." He said my name carefully, testing it. "This evidence isn't going to get stronger. If anything, the longer we wait, the more time he has to hide assets."

"He's not hiding anything," I said. "He thinks he's untouchable. That's the whole architecture of him. He's never once in his life believed a woman could out-think him." I closed the folder in front of me, lined the edges up square. "I want him comfortable. I want him spending money he thinks is safe. I want him bragging to someone about how well things are going." I looked at Victor. "Then we file. And it lands on a man who has no idea it's coming."

Victor studied me for a second. Then he nodded, slow, like he was recalculating something. "Comfortable men don't cover their tracks," he said.

"No," I said. "They don't."

He made a note. I looked over at Kingston. He hadn't moved from the window, hadn't said a word through any of it. But his eyes were on me, and there was something in them I hadn't seen directed at me in years — not pity, not concern. Respect. The kind you don't hand out. The kind you earn.

He didn't say anything about it. He never did. He just uncrossed his arms and said, "Victor, send Elina the draft filing so it's ready the day she says go," and that was that.

Across town, Leroy's phone had started ringing differently.

He didn't notice at first. A supplier who usually confirmed within the hour went quiet for two days. He figured it was a scheduling thing. Then a shipping contract he'd had locked for eight months got "reallocated," no explanation, just a form email from a name he didn't recognize.

By Thursday, three more contracts had evaporated. He called the account managers directly. Voicemail. He called again. Voicemail. He left messages that started polite and ended with his voice climbing, cracking at the edges in a way he would have hated if he could hear himself.

"This is Leroy Moore, I've worked with your company for six years, I don't understand why—" Click. Dead air.

He didn't know that most of those contracts had been built on relationships Elina herself had brokered years ago, favors and trust she'd built brick by brick before she ever left the industry for him. He'd never asked how the pipeline worked. He'd just assumed it would always be there, the way he assumed she would always be there.

He sat in his car outside a supplier's warehouse that wouldn't let him in the door, and he stared at his phone, and he thought about calling his mother's doctor to push the appointment back again, and he thought about calling his accountant, and he thought — just for a second, just barely — about calling Elina.

He didn't. Not yet.

He straightened his watch instead, like there was anyone left to lie to.
