Chapter 4

Julian didn’t give up easily.

Even trapped in a bed at NewYork-Presbyterian with chemical burns and broken legs, he had reach.

By Wednesday morning, the attacks hit the office.

An internal memo leaked to the press, calling my promotion an "unauthorized power grab." A tabloid ran a blind item suggesting I had slept my way up the corporate ladder. Julian’s loyalists in human resources began stalling my approvals.

Nora Chen walked into my office at ten and shut the door behind her.

"Julian called three board members from his hospital suite yesterday," Nora said. She took a sip of black coffee. "He can't see, but his mouth works fine. He’s telling everyone you took advantage of his accident."

"Let him talk," I said, not looking up from my screen. "Can he sign checks from an ICU bed?"

"No," Nora said with a faint smirk.

"Then he’s just noise."

At noon, my desk phone rang. It was an outside line from the hospital.

I picked it up. Daisy’s voice came through, trembling and frantic. "Elena? Put Julian on! They won't let me into his room, and my blood counts are dropping! I need my brother!"

I listened to her shallow, ragged breathing. She sounded like a terrified little girl.

"Julian is indisposed, Daisy," I said flatly.

"He promised me!" she cried out. "He promised the Diaz family would find me a donor! He said our name protects us from everything!"

I almost laughed. The irony was bitter as gall.

"Your name won't save you," I told her softly.

He hadn't told her. He still hadn't told her that the name belonged to someone else. I hung up before she could scream again.

At eight that night, someone knocked on the door of my Midtown studio.

I looked through the peephole. Brendan stood in the hallway.

He wore a tailored overcoat and held a paper cup from the bakery I used to love. He looked pale. His hair was slightly out of place. He had tracked down my address somehow.

I opened the door, but I didn't step back to invite him in.

"Elena," he said, breathing out a sigh that sounded rehearsed. "Thank God you're okay. You vanished. You didn't tell me where you moved."

"What do you want, Brendan?"

He pushed past me anyway, stepping into the small room. He set the bakery cup on my tiny counter and turned to face me. His hands reached out, trying to take mine. I pulled back and sat in the single armchair by the window, folding my hands neatly in my lap.

Brendan dropped his hands. He touched his collar—once, twice.

"My mother lost her mind," he began, his tone smooth, soothing, and earnest. "She said crazy things. But you know how she is, Elena. She exaggerates."

I said nothing. I just watched him.

"About Daisy..." He took a breath, shaking his head with deep regret. "It was an idiot mistake. An ego trip. She was needy, and I was stupid. But she means nothing to me. Nothing. You’re my wife. We can rebuild this. We can start over. A clean slate."

He took another step toward me, bending down slightly so we were at eye level. He put on his best boyish smile, the one that used to make my stomach flutter in college.

"We built five years together, Elena. Don't throw that away over a bump in the road."

I looked at his face. I studied his clear blue eyes, his sharp jaw, his perfectly straight teeth. I looked for any sign of a soul. There wasn't one. Just greed dressed up in wool.

My voice was quiet when I finally spoke.

"Who is the beneficiary on my life insurance policy?"

The room went dead.

Brendan froze mid-breath. His smile didn't fade—it just turned rigid, like wet plaster setting on his skin.

"What?" he squeaked.

"The five-million-dollar term life policy," I said evenly. "Taken out four months ago. Who gets the payout if I die?"

His face cycled through three distinct expressions in three seconds.

First came confusion. Then raw denial. Then a wave of cold, ugly terror.

His eyes darted toward the door. The smooth, charming husband vanished completely. In his place stood a cornered dog.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about," he muttered. His voice was cracked and thin.

"You do," I whispered.

Brendan swallowed hard. His throat clicked. He backed toward the door, his hand fumbling blindly behind him for the brass handle.

He didn't say another word. He didn't look back. He ripped the door open and bolted down the hall, his leather soles squealing against the linoleum.

I stayed in the chair. I didn't move an inch.

Ten minutes later, Marcus Webb arrived.

He carried a thick manila folder and a lukewarm coffee. He didn't bother sitting down. He dropped the folder onto the laminate table right beside Brendan’s forgotten bakery cup.

"You were right," Marcus said, crossing his arms.

I opened the folder. Inside were yellowed, grainy scans of medical charts from St. Jude’s Hospital in Queens. Dated thirty years ago.

"Look at the delivery room logs," Marcus pointed with a blunt finger. "Two girls born within forty minutes of each other. Room 4B and Room 4F. The nursery log has white-out over the wristband tags. One of the night nurses made a massive cash deposit the very next week."

My chest tightened, but I kept my breathing steady. "A swap."

"A deliberate swap," Marcus said. "The circumstantial timeline matches Julian’s medical emergency as a child. He needed blood marrow. He needed an infant match. But without a direct DNA test, no court will touch this."

"We get the DNA," I said immediately.

"How?"

"Adriel and Meredith Diaz drink tea every afternoon at their townhouse on 74th," I said. "They use private drivers and private staff. I want their cups, their hair, their napkins. Whatever it takes. Do it quietly."

"Understood," Marcus nodded. "And the second part?"

"Did you find the family?" I asked, my voice tightening slightly. "The family I was given to?"

Marcus pulled a small black notebook from his inner pocket. He flipped it open.

"The parents passed away years ago," he said softly. "Pneumonia for the father. Heart failure for the mother. But there is one survivor from that household."

I looked up at him. "Who?"

"A brother," Marcus said. "Born two years before you. He has severe cerebral palsy. He lives in a state-run adult home out in Jamaica, Queens."

Marcus tapped the page.

"His name is Otis Wells."
