Chapter 5

The state-run group home in Jamaica, Queens smelled like floor wax and boiled potatoes.

I walked through the double doors on a Tuesday afternoon. Otis sat at a corner table near the window. His body was stiff, his arms twisted slightly by cerebral palsy, but his eyes were sharp and clear.

I walked over and sat down across from him.

"Hi," I said softly. "I'm Elena."

He tilted his head and looked at me. He didn't ask questions. He didn't ask why an unfamiliar woman in a wool coat was sitting at his table. On the wood between us, a single chess puzzle was laid out.

He reached out with slow, clumsy effort and touched a black pawn.

I lifted my hands and signed: *Knight to F3?*

He blinked. He looked at my moving fingers, then looked back at my face. A small, crooked smile appeared on his lips.

He picked up a blue pen with a thick rubber grip and wrote on a yellow legal pad: *Too slow. Bishop takes.*

His handwriting was shaky, but legible.

I leaned back and signed: *You're right.*

I stayed for an hour. We didn't talk about money, or blood, or penthouses on the Upper East Side. He just worked on his puzzle, and I watched. He was patient and completely quiet. Sitting next to him felt like stepping out of a cold rain into a warm room.

I came back the next week. And the week after that.

I bought him a real wooden chess set and a new notebook. He never questioned who I was. Every time I walked into the room, he simply pointed to the empty chair and waited for my move.

***

On a rainy Friday, Marcus Webb came to my studio.

He didn't take off his wet trench coat. He dropped a thick white envelope onto the counter.

"The lab finished the rush order," Marcus said.

My chest went tight. I tore the envelope open with steady fingers.

Two pages of genetic data slid out.

Elena Wells: 99.9% biological match to Adriel Diaz and Meredith Diaz.

Daisy Diaz: 0.0% match to the Diaz family. 100% biological match as full sibling to Otis Wells.

The truth sat right there in black ink.

I was the true Diaz daughter. Daisy was Otis’s sister. Julian had taken me from a hospital crib thirty years ago and tossed me to strangers, all so he could keep his grip on the family empire.

My fingers clamped hard around the paper. My knuckles went white.

"Do we go to the press?" Marcus asked.

"No," I said.

"Elena, you have enough here to destroy them right now."

"The press writes an article and people forget by Monday," I replied. My voice was low and ice-cold. "I don't want an article. I want a public execution. Brendan, Julian, Daisy. All of them in one room."

I smoothed the paper down. The Plaza Hotel gala was twelve days away.

***

Over the next ten days, I barely slept four hours a night.

I pushed the landmark acquisition for Diaz Enterprises across the finish line. I reworked the financing, took midnight calls with lenders, and closed the commercial real estate deal. Nora Chen backed me at every turn. When the business papers printed the headlines, only one name was on the front page: Elena Wells. I made sure everyone knew the victory belonged to me, not Julian.

While I ran the company, I met quietly with federal prosecutors.

I handed over everything. Julian's offshore shell companies. Years of embezzled funds. And the bank records connecting Brendan's money to the Bronx warehouse.

The prosecutors were eager. They wanted Julian, and they wanted Brendan.

"We'll have plainclothes agents inside the ballroom," the lead prosecutor assured me. "When you give us the word, we lock the doors."

Three days before the event, I visited The Plaza Hotel.

I found the lead audiovisual technician behind the stage. I handed him an envelope of cash and a black flash drive.

"When I step up to the podium," I said, "switch every screen in the room to this drive."

He looked at the cash, swallowed hard, and nodded. "Yes, ma'am. Consider it done."

On the morning before the gala, I drove out to Queens one last time.

I carried a garment bag containing a tailored charcoal suit. I laid it on Otis’s bed.

He looked at the dark wool, then looked at me with a puzzled frown. He grabbed his pen and wrote: *What is this?*

I signed to him slowly. "A party. An important night. I want you with me."

His jaw worked with effort. He looked down at his stiff, crooked hands. He wrote: *People stare.*

I reached out and placed my hand gently over his fingers.

"Let them stare," I whispered. "Tomorrow night, you are the only person in that room who matters to me. Will you come?"

Otis stared into my eyes. After a long silence, he gave a slow, determined nod.

I drove back into Manhattan and picked up my gown from Fifth Avenue. Emerald green satin. Clean, sharp cuts. No lace. No softness.

The stage was set. The trap was ready to snap shut.
