Chapter 3

I checked out of the hospital on Thursday morning.

My body still had a dull ache, but my mind was completely clear. I rented a short-term studio in Midtown. I didn't go back to the penthouse I shared with Brendan. I didn't want to smell his soap or see his clothes.

At noon, I met Marcus Webb at a quiet diner on 8th Avenue.

Marcus was fifty, with gray hair and sharp, tired eyes. He spent twenty years as an NYPD fraud investigator before opening his own firm. I pushed an envelope of cash across the laminate table.

"I need three things," I said.

Marcus didn't touch the cash yet. "Tell me."

"First, Julian Diaz. Dig into his childhood, his medical records, and his family standing. Second, my hiring file at Diaz Enterprises. Julian scouted me out of state college five years ago. I want to know why."

Marcus raised an eyebrow. "And the third?"

"Julian told me something in a Bronx warehouse," I said quietly. "He said I was never supposed to be in this story. Find out what story he meant."

Marcus nodded once. He took the envelope and slid it into his coat. "Give me two weeks."

"Take ten days," I said.

After Marcus left, I opened my laptop.

I knew all of Brendan’s passwords. For five years, I managed our taxes, our joint accounts, and his family trust paperwork. I logged into his private cloud drive.

It took me forty minutes to find it.

It was a term life insurance policy. Five million dollars. Taken out four months ago on my life.

The sole beneficiary was Brendan Harris.

Beneath that file was a wire transfer. Two weeks before my kidnapping, Brendan moved fifty thousand dollars from his personal account into an anonymous LLC. Marcus Webb had already flagged that LLC for me—it owned the Bronx warehouse where Julian tried to kill me.

Brendan hadn't just looked away. He had helped pay for the hit. He wanted me dead so he could marry Daisy and cash in five million dollars.

My hands didn't shake. I plugged in an external hard drive, copied every single document, and locked the drive in my purse.

No tears. No screaming. Just evidence.

On Monday morning, I walked into Diaz Enterprises at 7:57 AM.

Three minutes early. Exactly as usual.

The 40th floor was a mess. Julian was still in a medically induced coma at Presbyterian Hospital. His eyes were chemically burned, and his crushed legs were held together with metal pins. Daisy was nowhere to be seen. She was in a luxury clinic, crying about her blood disorder and demanding attention.

Without Julian, the executives were running around like headless chickens.

I set my briefcase on the desk in my office, then walked straight into the main boardroom.

Six department heads were arguing over the Hudson Yards contract. Julian’s chief of staff, a nervous man named Miller, was sweating through his blue shirt.

"We can't sign off without Mr. Diaz," Miller stammered. "The board will kill us."

I pulled out a chair at the head of the table. I sat down.

The room went dead silent.

"Julian isn't coming back anytime soon," I said. My voice was calm, steady, and flat. "And the city deadline is five o'clock today. If we miss it, we lose the ten-million-dollar deposit."

Nora Chen, the most senior board member in the building, watched me from the other side of the table. She had never liked Julian’s arrogance.

"Do you have the revised terms, Elena?" Nora asked.

"Right here," I said, sliding a thick blue folder toward her. "I removed Julian’s markup. I renegotiated the zoning permits on Friday. We save four percent on materials."

Nora opened the folder. She read two pages, closed it, and looked around the room.

"Elena signs as interim director," Nora said firmly. "Anyone have a problem with that?"

Nobody said a word.

For five years, Julian had taken the credit while I did the actual work. I knew every contract, every vendor, and every loophole in this company. I didn't need to ask for power. I just picked it up off the floor where Julian dropped it.

At four that afternoon, I visited Scott Harris at his construction headquarters in Queens.

Brendan’s father sat behind a heavy oak desk. He looked worn out. The news of Brendan’s shattered marriage and Kimora’s screaming fits had clearly reached him.

"Elena," Scott said, shifting in his leather chair. "If you're here about Brendan—"

"I'm not here about your son," I interrupted.

I dropped a thin gray folder on his desk.

Scott frowned. He opened it. His face lost all its color within ten seconds.

Inside were bank receipts showing that Brendan had routed part of the warehouse payment through a Harris Construction supply account.

"This is fraud," I said softly. "It connects your family business directly to a conspiracy for murder. If this hits the District Attorney's desk, your state licenses are gone by tomorrow morning."

Scott looked up, his jaw tight. "Are you blackmailing me, Elena?"

"I'm offering you a deal," I said. "Harris Construction breaks its exclusive deal with Julian’s cronies. You back my new development project under Diaz Enterprises. You supply the concrete and cranes on my terms. You stay profitable. And you stay out of prison."

Scott stared at me. He was searching for the gentle girl who used to bring homemade pie to Sunday dinners.

She wasn't there anymore.

"And Brendan?" Scott asked hoarsely.

"Brendan made his bed," I said.

Scott looked back down at the papers. His business was his life. He picked up his silver pen and signed the partnership contract without another word.

He didn't ask where his son was. He didn't ask how I was doing.

I took the signed contract, stood up, and buttoned my coat.

One by one, the walls around Brendan were turning into stone.
