Chapter 4

I found Diane Shaw through a referral so layered I could barely trace it myself. That was the point. A former law school classmate who owed me a favor connected me to a corporate litigator who'd once faced Diane across a negotiation table. 'She's brutal,' he'd said. 'And she never loses.' He gave me a number. No email. No paper trail.

We met at The Gramercy, a members-only club in Midtown where privacy was the primary amenity. The room was small, windowless, soundproofed. Diane was already there when I arrived, sitting with her back to the wall. She was fifty-something, silver hair cut sharp at her jaw, wearing a black suit that probably cost more than most people's monthly rent.

'Mrs. Foster,' she said. Not a question.

'Ms. White,' I corrected. 'I kept my name.'

She smiled slightly. 'Good. That'll make the paperwork easier.'

I sat across from her and set the leather notebook on the table. Then the USB drive. Diane looked at both, then at me. 'Tell me what I'm about to see,' she said.

I told her. All of it. The fingerprints. The drugging. The affair. The embezzlement. The baby-swap conspiracy. I kept my voice level, clinical. I could have been presenting quarterly earnings. Diane didn't interrupt. She took notes in shorthand on a yellow legal pad, her pen moving steadily.

When I finished, she set the pen down. 'You have proof of all of this?'

'Everything,' I said. I tapped the USB drive. 'Surveillance footage. Financial forensics. Toxicology reports. Audio recordings.'

Diane picked up the drive, turned it over in her fingers. 'And you want?'

'Criminal charges,' I said. 'Embezzlement. Assault with a controlled substance. Conspiracy. I want him prosecuted. I want him destroyed.'

'Divorce?'

'After,' I said. 'I want the criminal case filed first. I want him arrested before he knows what's happening.'

Diane studied me for a long moment. Then she nodded. 'I'll need seventy-two hours to review everything. If it's as airtight as you say, we move fast. No warning. No negotiation.' She paused. 'This will be public. Ugly. Are you prepared for that?'

'I'm counting on it,' I said.

She smiled again, wider this time. 'Then let's get to work.'

That night, I couldn't sleep. Not because of Pierce—he was in Chicago for a conference, or so he'd said—but because something was nagging at me. A detail I'd missed. I kept thinking about the guest bedroom, about the nights I'd listened to them through the wall.

I got up and went to my office. Opened the laptop. Pulled up the nanny-cam archive.

I started with the oldest footage, weeks back, before I'd stopped drinking the tea. Nights when I'd been fully unconscious. I scrolled through hours of empty hallways, dark rooms, nothing.

Then, at 2:17 AM on a night three weeks ago, Naya appeared in the master bathroom. Alone. Pierce wasn't with her.

I watched her open my medicine cabinet. She took out my serum, the expensive one I ordered from France, and applied it to her own face. Then my eye cream. My moisturizer. She was methodical, unhurried, like she was performing a routine she'd done before.

She moved to the vanity. Picked up my perfume and sprayed her wrists. Tried on my earrings, the diamond studs my father gave me when I graduated. She looked at herself in the mirror for a long time, turning her head side to side.

Then she went into the bathroom. I watched her open the cabinet under the sink, pull out the toilet brush, and scrub the inside of the bowl. When she was done, she rinsed the brush under the faucet. Then she picked up my toothbrush from the holder and used it to scrub the toilet again.

My stomach turned. I kept watching.

Naya walked to the closet. She pulled out a piece of my lingerie—the ivory silk set I'd worn on my honeymoon—and used it to wipe her shoes clean. She dropped the lingerie back in the drawer when she was finished. Then she left the bathroom, walked down the hall, and disappeared into the guest bedroom.

I sat there, staring at the screen. My hands were shaking. Not with fear. With something colder.

I scrolled forward. Found another night. Same pattern. Naya in my bathroom, using my things, contaminating my space. On the third night, she went into the nursery.

I watched her approach the bassinet. My son was asleep. She stood over him for eleven seconds. Then she walked to the changing table, opened the formula container, and pulled a small plastic bag from her pocket. She poured white powder into the formula, stirred it with her finger, and closed the lid.

I called the lab at seven AM. Had the formula tested by noon. The results came back at four: baby powder. Non-toxic. But deliberate.

I threw out every container in the nursery. Replaced the formula, the wipes, the lotion. Everything. Then I called a security company and had the nursery lock upgraded to a biometric system. My fingerprint only. Not Pierce's. Not Maria's. Mine.

That night, I went into the nursery and stood by the bassinet. My son was asleep, his tiny chest rising and falling. I thought about Naya's hand in the formula. Her face in my mirror. Her shoes on my lingerie.

I thought about Pierce watching her do it. Or maybe not watching. Maybe not caring.

I picked up my phone and texted Diane Shaw: *I have more footage. When can we meet?*

Her reply came thirty seconds later: *Tomorrow. Same place. Bring everything.*

I looked at my son one more time. Then I went back to my office and started exporting files.
